1 Claim.
This invention relates to hangers for mounting electrical apparatus. I
An object of this invention is the provision of a hanger for mounting electrical apparatus on supports.
'Another object of this invention is the provision of a hangerfor mounting electrical apparatus having enclosing-cases of different shapes on supports of different sizes and shapes.
This invention, together with other objects, will be better understood from the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is an elevational View illustrating an assembly in which the hanger embodying the features of this invention is employed;
Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the assembly illus trated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation'al View of the hanger embodying the features of this invention;
Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the structure shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a rear elevational View of the hanger shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan View of the structure shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, this invention is illustrated as comprising a hanger it} for mounting electrical apparatus such as a distribution transformer IE on a suitable support M, such as a wood, concrete or metallic pole or standard. In the drawing only the case of the transformer is shown, it being understood that the case is suitable for carrying the bushings and other attachments associated with the case.
As illustrated in Figs. 3 through 6, the hanger it comprises an elongated channel member it having a face 53 andside walls 29 and 22. The ends of the face of the channel member [6 terminate inflanges 24 and 26 for receiving the transformer l2, as will be explained more fully hereinafter.
In order to seat the channel member I6 on the support it, theside walls 23 and 22 of the channel member terminate in outwardly extendingflanges 28 and 38, respectively. Theflanges 28 and 313 function as feet for seating the channel member E6 on the support I4.
In order to carry the hanger it], bolts 32 and 3 are disposed in spaced relation through the support i i. One end of each of the bolts extends outwardly from the support for receiving the hanger, as will be explained more fully hereinafter.
The face l8 of the channel member i6 is provided with a plurality ofopenings 35 and 38 in spaced relation for cooperating with the spacedbolts 32 and 34, respectively, in retaining the hanger on the support M. The opening 36 is an elongated slot, the lower end of which termimates in an enlarged opening suitable for receiving the outwardly extending end of bolt 32. Thelower opening 38 is an elongated slotsimilar to the elongated slot portion of opening 38 and terminates in an enlarged opening provided in theflange member 26 for receiving the outwardly extending end of bolt 36 as the hanger i is mounted on thesupport 54.
Since theopenings 36 and 38 are in spaced relation similar to bolts 32 and 3d, thehanger 10 may be easily mounted on the support it by so seating thefeet 28 and 36 of the channel member on the support that the ends of bolts 32 and 3 register with and project through the enlarged portions ofopenings 36 and 38, respectively, in the channel member. When theopenings 36 and 38 thus receive thebolts 32 and 34, respectively, the channel member may then be slipped down over the projecting ends ofbolts 32 and 34 to a position where the bolts are retained in the elongated slot portion of theopenings 36 and 38. With the hanger H! in this position, it may be secured to the support It by so tightening the bolts that the bolt heads engage the face I8 of the. channel member.
In order to hang thetransformer 52 on the hanger, theflange 24 of the hanger H) is provided with an opening or socket it for receiving apin 42 which may be provided on the case of the transformer !2. Theflange 24 carries downwardly projectingside walls 6 and 8 so disposed as to seat against the face [8 of the channel member to support the flange in its outwardly extending position. Other means for supporting the flange may however be employed.
Thepin 42 may be carried as an integral part of the case of the transformer l2. In the modification, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thepin 42 is carried as an integral part of aflange 44 which is secured to the case of the transformer near its upper edge in any suitable manner such as by welding. As shown a plurality of flanges are disposed in spaced relation about the case of the transformer. Theflanges 44 in this position aid in maintaining the cover of the case in position. Acover holding lug 48 is associated with each of theflanges 44 and is so positioned that one of its ends engages the cover of the transformer I2 and the other of its ends engages an associatedflange 44. Each of thelugs 48 is secured to an associatedflange 44, by means of abolt 50, in a position where it clamps the cover on the case. In addition to aiding in maintaining the cover in position on the case, theflanges 44 also serve as lifting hooks for lifting the transformer.
The lower flange 2B of the hanger l0 carries abracket 52, the sides of which terminate in flanges orfeet 54 and 55 for seating against the side of the transformer case. Anopening 58 is provided in thebracket 52 for receiving a bolt orstud 60 which is carried on the transformer case.
When the pin d2 engages thesocket 40 in theupper flange 24 of the hanger, thetransformer 12 is supported on the hanger in the position illustrated in Fig. l, with thefeet 54 and 56 of thebracket 52 seated against the case of the transformer and the bolt 6D projecting through the opening 58 of thebracket 52. In order that the transformer may be mounted on the support in a plurality of positions with respect to the support, a plurality of he bolts 66 may be disposed in spaced relation around the case similarly to the spaced flanges M.
By providing the feet on the channel member and on the bracket, the hanger may be employed for mounting transformers having round, octagon or square cases on supports of different shapes. Further, by providing the spaced feet on the channel member at a distance from the face thereof, it is evident that the hanger may be employed with supports of different sizes, since the opening between the spaced feet and face of the channel member is of a size sufficient to receive supports of small circumferences while the feet are so spaced as to satisfactorily seat on supports of large circumferences or on supports which have substantially flat surfaces.
The hanger may be easily fabricated from a single sheet of material, or in the larger types of hangers, from suitable channel members and angle irons. The hanger member may be easily mounted on the support, as explained hereinbefore, for receiving the transformer.
Although this invention has been described with reference to a particular embodiment thereof, it is not, however, to be limited thereto except insofar as is necessitated by the prior art and the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A hanger for mounting transformers on supports, the case of the transformer being provided with lifting pins and retaining bolts and the supports with spaced retaining pins, comprising, a channel member having spaced feet for seating on a support, the channel member having openings disposed in spaced relation in its face for receiving the retaining pins to removably retain it on the support, a flange carried by each end of the channel member and projecting outwardly therefrom at an angle to the face of the channel member, one of the flanges having downwardly extending side walls seating against the face of the channel member for supporting the flange in its outwardly extending position, a socket in said one of the flanges for receiving in engagement one of the lifting pins of the transformer to hang it, a bracket carried by the other of the flanges extending upwardly from the flange and being substantially parallel to the face of the channel member for receiving the transformer case, spaced feet carried by the bracket for seating the case when the transformer hangs from the supported flange, the bracket having an opening therein for receiving one of the retaining bolts of the case whereby the case may be locked in its supported position to prevent movement of the case to cause the disengagement of the lifting pin and socket.
