Claims;

, This invention relates to a box which serves the initial purpose of a shipping container, preferably for advertising material, and subsequently is used as a display, such as a window 5 display or the like, which usually will be made up in conjunction with the material which was in the container. The box itself may be effectively used as a background for other material, such as knocked-down fiber board shapes and the like,

m which when set up are arranged in artistic relation to such background. For this purpose certain elements of the box are so formed as to be inherently capable of serving two functions and the box is also provided with certain elements 1 which can be separated and discarded when the box has finished its usefulness as a container and is to be exposed to view.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The annexeddrawings and the following description set forth in detail certain structure embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various structural forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

- My invention may be embodied in any suitable 5 materials and sizes, although corrugated boar is particularly adapted for the purpose.

'The blank, either'of Fig. 1 or of Fig. 4 may of course be of size, shape and proportion suitable for intended. purposes, the illustrations being 50 typical and not restrictive. Referring now in detail to the blank of Fig. 1, this comprises a back I,wings 2 and 3 andends 5 and 6. The wings and ends each include portions l2, l3, l5, and I6 which form the sides of the completedcarton.

by short dashes and may be either creased or otherwise defined as customary in the box making industry. The only such lines which require any further discussion are those along the junction of the end B with the back I. This line will be creased in the ordinary manner along themiddle portion 20, and may be further weakened for easy separation along theouter portions 2|. The upstanding part l6 of the end is separated from the remainder by afolding crease 22, and 10 the portion which was below thisline 22 in the drawings 'is used as an overlapping inside flap when the article is used as a box.

This portion below theline 22 is creased and cut to be set up as the easel or back support of Fig. 3. The special creasing for the purpose includes the twolongitudinallines 23, 24, along which themember 6 is bent as shown in Fig. 3 to form supportingprops 25, 26. There is also ahorizontal brace 21 which is hinged at thecrease line 28 and completely severed through in the blank as shown bythesolid line 29 which begins at the intersection 23-28 and continues around to the intersection 24-28. Notches 30 and 3| in this blank engage theedges 32 and 33 respectively within the props 25-26 when the easel is set up, Fig. 3.

The blank is weakened for severing along aline 35, 36 indicated in Fig. 1 by dot and dash. This line is shown as a series of scallops or curves and may be of any form desired, usually of some ornamental style.

The portion of the blank below theline 35, 3G and above thelines 20, 2| is printed or otherwise decorated as may be desired since this is the exhibit face which is exposed to view when the box is set up as a panel.

When the box formed from the blank of Fig.

1 is closed for shipping it presents no unusual features but is of entirely conventional appear- 40 ance as in Fig. 2, and may be closed by any usual sealing means.

When set up for a window or like display, the blank is severed along the line 35-36 and the upper portion is discarded. Thelines 2|, 2| are also severed and theend portion 6 is swung up against the back of the bottom I about theline 20 as a hinge. At the same time theportion 6 is formed into a supporting easel by swinging out theside props 25, 26 at right angles to-the back, and swinging thehorizontal lock brace 21 down around theline 28, whereupon notches 30 and 3| engage theinner edges 32 and-33 respectively, thus holding the props in place and locking theentire element 6 into a self-sustaining easel back for the display stand. Thewings 2 and 3 are set forward at an angle, thus preventing the upstanding display from falling forward, while the easel supports it at the rear. 5 My invention may also be used for containing one or more plaques or panels which are to be built up on or attached to the main panel, all as exemplified in Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive.

Forexample, I may form my principal panel, 10 which also constitutes the package body, with a back 4| which becomes the box bottom,sides 42 and 43, andwings 44 and 45 attached thereto, all parts connected by the usual fold lines such as 46 and 41. The blank is pre-cut at the factory, giving an ornamentaltop finish 48, 49 to the wings. The upper edge of the back 4! has an end wall 5| andlap 52 successively hinged, asbest seen in Fig. 6, while asimilar end wall 53 andlap 54 are attached to the bottom. For setting up '20 thediSplay theend 53 may be cut off along the hinge, line between 4! and 53, and theparts 53, 54 discarded. Such lower end construction as 6, or as 53, 54 may be used alternatively.

The various surfaces 4! to 45 inclusive are intendedto be appropriately printed or otherwise decorated, as generally indicated by Fig. 4, leaving a blank in the decoration of the section 4| corresponding more or less closelyto the shape of a plaque orsupplemental panel 60, herein conveniently shown as a round disc bearing fur.- ther exhibit matter on its face. Such a supplemental panel as this may of course be of any shape desired, but for the purposes of the present invention must not be too large to be contained within the box of Fig. 5 as folded.

- To fasten the supplemental panel to the main 1 'panel I use a fastening strip permanently secured in itsmiddle part 61 to the back of 60, and out at each end into ahook 62, adapted to swing out along thebend line 63. The width at 64 of the hook opening is equal to the corresponding dimension of the reversely bent end 5|, as shown in Fig. 6.

To. transport the display material theplaque 45 Bil is put inside, withhinges 62 folded fiat as in Fig. 7, and the box is closed as in Fig.v 5 with theflap 52 overlying theornamental edges 4d, 49. The box isfastened by any usual means.

It will be understood that my display in-either formshown or in other appropriate modifications may be suificient in itself ,or be used as a background for merchandise, or combined with other elements to make up a more elaborate window exhibit or a counter exhibit or the like.

It will. beappreciated that the exact forms shown are only exemplary, particularly'as to the easel and the top edges, and also that the principle'of cutting off and discarding a part of the box, or the principle of attaching other panels to the set-up, or both arrangements, may be applied to larger or smaller portions than shown herein.

Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the structure herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or. the equivalent of such stated means. be employed.

I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:

1. A unitary box blank comprising a back with component box surfaces defined thereon by folding lines, such surfaces including back, front and 5 ends foldably interconnected along said lines with back and front related as mutually lateral wings, display matter applied to part of that side of the blank which will constitute the inner surface of the closed box, one of said ends being 10 lined for folding into an easel to be positioned behind the lower end of the back, and a severing line across said blank between said ends, said easel end and the portion of said blank above said severing line being free of display matter.

2. A shipping box comprising an inner surface ornamented throughout part of its area,a defined division between the ornamented and unornamented portions of such inner surface area, other differently defined divisions establishing folding lines for said blank, said blank comprising a back, sides, ends, inner flaps on said ends, and outer closing 'flaps on said sides adapted to fold over said ends when in closed conditiomone of said ends comprising a reversible member witha mul- 25 tiplicity of sections, means including props and interengaging means between said props'for the, formation of an easel when said end is reversed" from inside to outside position. I

3. A box having a back, wings constituting sides and a front, and end closures, a severing line across said back and wings below one of said end closures,'the other-end closure beinghinged to the back and severable from the back except at the middle portion of the hinge line and bendable from the junction between severable and nonseverable portions toform easel props, and a looking brace hinged within said non-severable portion and engageable with said easel props, said other end closure being movable about said non-severable portion as a hinge to a position against the outside of said back.

4. A combined package and display organization comprising a box anda supplemental panel with collapsible parts and having its greatest dimensions in length, width and thickness when folded less than the corresponding inside dimensions of. said box when closed, thereby being adapted selectively to be packed in. said box or to be attachedthereto as an extension of an exposed-surface thereof, said-supplemental panel including means to engage an edge of said box when setup for display. r

5. In combination, a main display panel, means whereby said panel may be self-supporting when a in exhibiting position, a supplemental panel adapted to be fastened to said main panel and constitute a coordinate part of the entire exhibit, said man panel including successive end flaps adapted to be folded in onemanner to close said main panel into a package of size to contain the supplemental panel and in another manner to form an edge wall and a'flange dependent therefrom, said supplemental panel: including '65 I hooks attached to its back, said' hooks including supporting notches equal to the width of said edge wall.
