Description

March 16, 1937. c LOETSCHER 2,073,897
PANEL FASTENER Filed Dec. 27, 1935 EFF-IE3] f/w/L C. [05750152.
Patented Mar. 16, 1937 UNITED si'ATEs PATENT OFFICE The object of this invention is to improve the construction of fasteners for removablysecuring screen or glazed panels in door or other openings in a manner to prevent dislodgment of the fasteners due from various causes such as severe slamming of the door when blown by the wind.
A further object of the invention is to improve the construction of the fastener, to reduce its cost and to facilitate assembly thereof in the frame of the opening.
With these and other objects in view. as will be pointed out as the description progresses, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation with parts broken away and shown in section to illustrate underlying parts,
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on 20 the line H of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of the fastener with non-contracted ferrule projected in dotted 'lines.
- In the drawing, reference numeral 2 designates 25 a door or other stile and 3 the stile of the re-.
movable panel, which latter may carry a window pane I or in lieu thereof, an insect screen. Thestiles 2 and 3 are conventionally rabbeted to provide overlappingflanges 5 and 6 respectively and 30 shoulders I and 8 respectively. Well in the plane of theflange 6, thestile 2 is provided with an arcuate saw kerf orslot 9 and coinciding therewith'is an arcuate cut in formed in thestile 3. The kerf or slot in thestile 2 is in a plane parallel with the plane of said stile, while the. slot in thestile 3 may be in the same plane or one slightly inclined with respect thereto to effect a camming action to draw theflanges 5 and 6 tightly together by the action of the turn-button plate l2 working in said kerfs or slots.
A distance back from the shoulder I of thestile 3 is bored a countersink l4 leading to a bored hole I! that terminates in a shoulder IS. A smaller hole ll, of a diameter to accommodate the stem of the fastener to be described, is then provided in the bottom of the hole l5, thereby providing the aforesaid shoulder IS. The hole I! does not penetrate through thestile 2.
50 The stem of the fastener comprises acylindrical bottom end 20, below asquare shank portion 2|, above which is thecircular head flange 22 andhead 24, the latter being provided with aslot 25.
to receive a screw-driver or other rotating impleing'machine from stock of the diameter of thcylindrical end 20.
The turn-button plate I2 is elongated'and hasrounded ends 28 and a central square opening 21 loosely receiving thesquare shank 2| of the stem so that the plate l2 may cant and work in a slot in the panel style that is either parallel or inglined with respect to the plane of the panel stile The device is assembled by inserting the stem into the prepared holes with thecylindrical end 20 andsquare shank 2| within the bore l'l. but out of contact with its walls. The head flange 22 rests and turns upon the shoulder l6 and the entire stem is confined in position by asplit spring ferrule 28 normally of greater internal diameter than the external diameter of thehead 24. This ferrule is placed upon the counterbore l4 and driven down thereon, whereupon the inclination of the counterbore will cause the ferrule to contract until it enters the smaller bore [5 and conforms to the size thereof. It is then driven straight down, and since it normally tends to expand, the wood of the stile in which it is embedded tends to enter the indentations 29 and to thereby prevent its displacement. Obviously, small burrs which would dig into the wood could be substituted for the indentations, and in fact the operation of indenting naturally throws up small projections at the margins of the indentations. Thus, the roughened expandingferrule 28 acts to retain itself as well as the turn-button operating stem in place against being thrown out under heavy shocks such as are occasioned by severe slamming of the door when blown shut by winds.
What is claimed:
1. A fastening device for locking two slotted members together; one member being provided with a large and a small bore providing a shoulder between them; a turn-button plate rotatably arranged within the member having the bores to engage the other said member; a stemwithin the smaller bore associated with the turn-button plate to operate the same; an enlarged operating head upon said stem rotatably seated upon said shoulder and within the larger bore; and a contracted spring ring within the large bore and expanding to grip the walls thereof and being engaged with the said head to confine the same upon the shoulder and the stem against displacement.
2. A fastening device for lockingv two slottedmembers together; one member being provided with a large and a small bore providing a shoulder between them; a tum-button plate rotatably arranged within the member having the bores to engage the other said member; a stem within the smaller bore associated with the turnbutton plate to operate the same; an enlarged operating head upon said stem rotatably seated upon said shoulder and having a reduced peripheral portion and a spring ring within the large bore and reduced peripheral portion of the head and expanding to grip the walls of the bore to confine the head upon the shoulder and the stem against displacement.
3. A fastening device forlockingtwo slottedmembers together; one member being provided with a large and a small bore providing a shoulder between them a turn-button plate-rotatably arranged within the member having the bores to engage the other said member; a stem within the smaller bore associated with the turnbutton plate to operate the same; an enlarged operating head upon said stem rotatably seated upon said shoulder and having a reduced peripheral portion; and a spring ring within the large bore and reduced peripheral portion of the head and expanding to grip the walls of the bore to conflne the head upon the shoulder and stem against displacement; said ring serving to center said head within the large bore and to form a bearing therefor.
4. A fastening device'for locking two members together; one member being provided with a large and a small bore and a countersink for the large bore; a shoulder between the two bores: a circular operating head rotatably seated upon said shoulder and provided with aproiecting peripheral flange adjacent said shoulder; a spring ring of less diameter than the largest part of the countersink and of greater normal diameter than that of the large bore; said ring being contracted within the large bore and expanding against the walls thereof and bearing against said flange to conflne the head upon said shoulder, said ring further serving to center said head within the large bore and to form a bearing therefor; a turn- 1 button plate within the member having the bore for engaging the other member, and means nonrotzetably connecting said head and turn-button D R 6. A fastening device for locking two slotted members together; one member being provided with a large and a small bore and a countersink for the large bore; a shoulder between the bores; a circular operating head rotatably seated upon said shoulder and provided with a projecting peripheral flange adjacent said shoulder: a-split externally roughened ring of less diameter than the largest part of the countersink and of greater normal'diameter than that of the bore; said ring being contracted within the large bore and expanding against the walls thereof and bearing against said flange to conflne the head upon said shoulder, said ring when within the large bore having an internal diameter of a dimension to permit the ring to form a bearing for the head and to center the same within the bore: a stem concentric with the head and arranged within the small bore and being non-circular in cross-section; and a plate rotatably arranged within the member having the bores and adapted to lock the members together; said plate having a noncircular opening for non-rotatably receiving the said non-circular stem.
