PER!
SINK FLUHER Filed March 1.3, 1935 Juosorv H. PERRY Patented Dec. 17, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT'OFFICE SINK FLUSHER tion of North Carolina,
Application March 13, 1935, Serial No. 10,919
4 Claims.
This invention relates to improved means for flushing and cleaning out the drain pipe of sinks and the like employing the Water pressure in the system for clearing the drain pipe.
It is an object of this invention to provide a universal apparatus attachable to a spigot or valve ordinarily disposed above a sink, lavatory and the like and having a universally usable tapered nozzle at the other end thereof adapted to fit into the outlet pipe for the sink and the like and also having means for securing the nozsic in position so that the water pressure in the system will not cause the nozzle to be dislodged from the opening of the outlet pipe and also will not require the operator to manually hold the nozzle in position.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:--
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section and showing my invention as applied to an ordinary kitchen sink;
Figure 2 is a view partly in vertical section of the upper end of my device;
Figure 3 is a view partly in vertical section of the lower end of the device;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View taken along the line 44 in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the upper end thereof secured to a diiferent type of spigot mouth.
Referring more specifically to the drawing the numeral ill indicates an ordinary kitchen sink above which are disposed one or more spigots ll having an enlarged portion l2 in which the valve handle !3 is fitted and this spigot having in the form shown in Figure 1 an ordinary plain discharge outlet. The sink is of conventional structure and has a fitting M secured at the outlet portion to which is usually secured an outlet pipe 15 by means of a suitable union IS. The lower end of member M which is secured to the sink usually has a perforated member ll integral with the lower end thereof for preventing large objects from passing into the discharge pipe 15.
My invention comprises a suitable flexible hose 2t,'which is usually made of rubber having a reenforced upper end 2i having atapered mouth 22 so that it will fit over various sizes of spigots including a plain spigot as shown in Figure 1 or a spigot of the type shown in Figure 5. This upper end ofportion 2| has a pair of opposed grooves in the exterior surface thereof in which the ends ofrubber bands 23 are vulcanized so that therubber bands 23 can be secured over theenlargement l 2 to securely hold theupper end 2| in firm contact with the outlet of spigot I I. The lower end of hose Zil has anenlargement 24 which is tapered so that it will fit various sizes of outlet 5 orifices and thisoutlet 24 has slidably secured therein amember 25 having ahook 26 on the lower end thereof and a handle on the upper end thereof with awasher 28 firmly secured immediately below the handle to confine a. compres- 10 sionspring 29 therearound.
The lower end ofcompression spring 29 is adapted to rest against fitting 30 in whichmember 25 is adapted to have sliding movement. When themember 24 is inserted into the dis- 15 charge outlet M; themember 25 is pushed downwardly and turned a partial revolution sohook 23 will pass through one of the perforations in member I! and then it will be turned a slight amount to engage one of the cross portions be- 20 tween said perforations so that thenozzle 24 will be held firmly in position and city water pressure cannot dislodge the same and therefore this pressure will be employed for clearing the outlet pipes.
In the drawing and specifications there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope or" the invention being set forth in the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. Means for applying water pressure to the outlet pipes of sinks and the like, comprising a flexible hose connected to a source of water pressure, a. perforated member insaid discharge outlet pipe, the lower end-of the hose having an enlarged tapering portion for fitting into the outlet pipe of the sink and the like, a hook member slidably mounted in the lower end of the hose and having tension means urging the same away from the outlet for engaging said perforated member for confining the lower end of the hose in position and holding it against city water pressure.
2. Means for flushing and washing obstructions from discharge pipes, outlet pipes and the like for sinks which comprises a flexible hose adapted to be connected to a source of water under pressure, the lower end of the hose having a tapered portion adapted to fit into said outlet pipe, a hook member slidably mounted in the lower end of the hose for engaging a portion of the outlet pipe for holding the lower end of the hose in the outlet pipe against pressure of the water when the spigot is opened, and tension means surrounding said hook member for holding the hook member in engagement with a portion of the outlet pipe.
3. Means for applying water pressure to the outlet pipe of a sink, lavatory and the like, which 7 is equipped with a perforated member, comprising a hose adapted to be connected to a source of water under pressure, the lower end of the hose having an enlargement extending an equal distance in all directions from the center of the hose and whose outer surface is tapering for fitting into the upper end of the outlet pipe, and means penetrating said enlargement on'the lower end ..of the hose and extending to' the upper outside portion of said enlargement for engaging the perforated member to hold the lower end of the hose in engagement with the discharge outlet.
4. In a sink provided with an outlet pipe, said outlet pipe having a perforated member therein, means for forcing water under pressure through said outlet pipe comprising a flexible hose adapted to be connected to a source of water under pressure, the lower end of the hose having an inverted frustro-conical enlargement whose outer surface is tapering for fitting into the upper end 10 of the outlet pipe, and a member slidably mounted in said enlargement and projecting into the outlet pipe and having a hook on the lower end thereof adapted to engage said perforated member and a spring surrounding said hook and 15 urging it upwardly for holding the lower end of the hose in said outlet pipe.
