Abstract

In general, devices, systems, and methods for fiducial identification and tracking are provided.

Description

Claims (20)

What is claimed is:
1. A surgical system, comprising:
a surgical device having a distal portion configured to be advanced into a body of a patient during performance of a surgical procedure;
a fiducial marker on an exterior of the distal portion of the surgical device, the fiducial marker storing information associated with the surgical device;
a first imaging device configured to detect the fiducial marker in the body of the patient using a first energy modality; and
a second imaging device configured to detect the fiducial marker in the body of the patient using a second, different energy modality.
2. The system ofclaim 1, wherein the first modality is visible light; and
the second modality is non-visible light.
3. The system ofclaim 2, wherein the second modality is one or more of multi-spectral light, computerized tomography (CT), ultrasound, Hall effect magnetism, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
4. The system ofclaim 1, further comprising a display device; and
a controller operatively coupled to the first and second imaging devices and configured to cause the display device to show data indicative of the fiducial marker detected by each of the first and second imaging devices.
5. The system ofclaim 4, wherein a robotic surgical system includes the controller, and the surgical device and the first and second imaging devices are each configured to be releasably coupled to and controlled by the robotic surgical system.
6. The system ofclaim 4, wherein a surgical hub includes the controller.
7. The system ofclaim 1, wherein the fiducial marker includes a plurality of fiducial markers each being configured to be detected by one of the first and second imaging devices, and each of the plurality of fiducial markers has a predefined size, aspect ratio, and distance from one another; and
the system further comprises a controller configured to determine a three-dimensional (3D) aspect of the plurality of fiducial markers.

The system ofclaim 1, wherein the fiducial marker includes a plurality of fiducial markers arranged in a pattern on the exterior of the distal portion of the surgical device such that the pattern perspective changes for the first imaging device based on a relative position of the pattern and the first imaging device and changes for the second imaging device based on a relative position of the pattern and the second imaging device; and
the system further comprises a controller is configured to analyze the pattern to determine at least one of a scale, angle, distance, and position of the surgical device.

The system ofclaim 1, wherein the fiducial marker is multi-modal such that the fiducial marker stores first information that is detectable by the first energy modality but not the second energy modality and stores second information that is detectable by the second energy modality but not the first energy modality; and
the first and second information communicate the same information associated with the surgical device.
10. The system ofclaim 9, wherein the first modality is visible light; and
the second modality is non-visible light.
11. The system ofclaim 1, wherein the surgical device includes one of a surgical dissector, a surgical stapler, a surgical grasper, a clip applier, a smoke evacuator, and a surgical energy device.
12. The system ofclaim 1, wherein the surgical device and the first and second imaging devices are each configured to be releasably coupled to and controlled by a robotic surgical system.
13. A surgical method, comprising:
advancing the surgical device ofclaim 1 into the body of the patient during the performance of the surgical procedure;
detecting, using the first imaging device ofclaim 1 releasably coupled to a robotic surgical system, the fiducial marker in the body of the patient using visible light; and
detecting, using the second imaging device ofclaim 1 releasably coupled to the robotic surgical system, the fiducial marker in the body of the patient using non-visible light.
14. The method ofclaim 13, wherein the non-visible light is one or more of multi-spectral light, computerized tomography (CT), ultrasound, Hall effect magnetism, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
15. The method ofclaim 13, further comprising causing, using a controller, a display device to show data indicative of the fiducial marker detected by each of the first and second imaging devices.
16. The method ofclaim 13, wherein the fiducial marker includes a plurality of fiducial markers each being configured to be detected by one of the first and second imaging devices, and each of the plurality of fiducial markers has a predefined size, aspect ratio, and distance from one another; and
the method further comprises determining, using a controller, a three-dimensional (3D) aspect of the plurality of fiducial markers.
17. The method ofclaim 13, wherein the fiducial marker includes a plurality of fiducial markers arranged in a pattern on the exterior of the distal portion of the surgical device such that the pattern perspective changes for the first imaging device based on a relative position of the pattern and the first imaging device and changes for the second imaging device based on a relative position of the pattern and the second imaging device; and
the method further comprises analyzing, using a controller, the pattern to determine at least one of a scale, angle, distance, and position of the surgical device.
18. The method ofclaim 13, wherein the fiducial marker is multi-modal such that the fiducial marker stores first information that is detectable using the visible light but not the non-visible light and stores second information that is detectable using the non-visible light but not the visible light; and
the first and second information communicate the same information associated with the surgical device.
19. The method ofclaim 13, wherein the robotic surgical system includes the controller.
20. The method ofclaim 13, wherein a surgical hub includes the controller.
