Abstract

An air controller can include an air pump, a flow control assembly, and vibration isolators. The vibration isolators can be positioned between the flow control assembly and supporting structures, such as supporting structures of a housing, to dampen vibration of the flow control assembly. The air controller can inflate and deflate an inflatable air chamber of a mattress of an air bed.

Description

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application is a continuation of U.S. application Ser. No. 15/337,484, filed Oct. 28, 2016. The disclosure of the prior application is considered part of (and is incorporated by reference in) the disclosure of this application.

TECHNICAL FIELD

This invention relates to vibration, and more particularly to vibration isolators for use in air controllers of air beds.

BACKGROUND

People have traditionally used beds that come in many shapes, sizes, and styles. Such beds can range from extremely simple designs to rather complex designs that include a variety of features. For example, some beds can have one or more inflatable air chambers. Some of such beds can include an inflation system including a number of mechanical and electrical components. For example, some beds can include one or more pumps with one or more valves for inflating the air chambers.

SUMMARY

Some embodiments of an air controller pump system can include one or more of the features and functions disclosed herein. Some embodiments can include vibration isolators for dampening vibration of a flow control assembly to achieve quieter operation. The vibration isolators can have certain features allowing for ease of assembly and suitable dampening of vibration due to actuation of solenoid valves. This can be desirable, for example, in an air bed system configured for automatically adjusting pressure while a user is asleep, where quiet operation can be particularly desirable.

In one aspect, an air bed system can include a mattress comprising a first inflatable air chamber and an air controller fluidly connected to the first inflatable air chamber of the mattress for inflating and deflating the first inflatable air chamber. The air controller can include an air pump, a flow control assembly fluidly connected between the air pump and the first inflatable air chamber, and first and second supporting structures. The flow control assembly is supported between the first and second supporting structure. A plurality of vibration isolators can include at least a first vibration isolator positioned between the first supporting structure and the flow control assembly and a second vibration isolator positioned between the second supporting structure and the flow control assembly.

In another aspect, an air controller includes an air pump, a flow control assembly having an air manifold fluidly connected to the air pump and a plurality of valves mounted to the air manifold, and a housing including a housing top having a first supporting structure and a housing bottom having a second supporting structure. The flow control assembly is supported between the first and second supporting structures. A plurality of vibration isolators include at least a first vibration isolator positioned between the first supporting structure and the flow control assembly and a second vibration isolator positioned between the second supporting structure and the flow control assembly.

Some of the implementations described herein may optionally include one or more of the following features. The vibration isolators each comprise a cylindrical portion extending substantially circumferentially about an axis and an annular portion extending substantially radially with respect to the axis. The annular portion has an inner rim that defines a hole and an outer rim connected to an end of the cylindrical portion. The annular portion includes a first set of projections extending from a first side of the annular portion and a second set of projections extending from a second side of the annular portion. The second side is positioned opposite the first side.

In another aspect, an air controller includes an air pump, a flow control assembly having an air manifold fluidly connected to the air pump and a plurality of valves mounted to the air manifold, a housing, and means for mounting the flow control assembly in the housing and dampening transmission of vibration from the flow control assembly to the housing.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

An air controller, such as for inflatable air beds, can both inflate and deflate air chambers of a mattress. In applications in which the air bed is configured for inflation and/or deflation while a user is sleeping on the air bed, quiet operation can be particularly desirable. An air control system can include vibration isolators connected to a flow control assembly having one or more valves to dampen vibration of the flow control assembly. This can reduce transmission of vibration from the valves to a housing of the air control system, and consequently, allow the air control system to operate more quietly.

FIG. 1 shows an exampleair bed system100 that includes a bed112. The bed112 includes at least one air chamber114 surrounded by aresilient border116 and encapsulated by bed ticking118. Theresilient border116 can comprise any suitable material, such as foam.

As illustrated inFIG. 1, the bed112 can be a two chamber design having first and second fluid chambers, such as afirst air chamber114A and asecond air chamber114B. In alternative embodiments, the bed112 can include chambers for use with fluids other than air that are suitable for the application. In some embodiments, such as single beds or kids' beds, the bed112 can include a

single air chamber

multiple air chambers

114A and114B can be in fluid communication with apump120. Thepump120 can be part of anair controller124, which can be in electrical communication with aremote control122. Theair controller124 can include a wired or wireless communications interface for communicating with one or more devices, including theremote control122. Theair controller124 can be configured to operate thepump120 to cause increases and decreases in the fluid pressure of the first and

second air chambers

114A and114B based upon commands input by a user using theremote control122. In some implementations, thepump120 and theair controller124 can be integrated into a common housing. In other embodiments, theair controller124 and thepump120 can be in separate housings.

Theremote control122 can include adisplay126, anoutput selecting mechanism128, apressure increase button129, and apressure decrease button130. Theoutput selecting mechanism128 can allow the user to switch air flow generated by thepump120 between the first and

second air chambers

114A and114B, thus enabling control of multiple air chambers with a singleremote control122 and asingle pump120. For example, theoutput selecting mechanism128 can by a physical control (e.g., switch or button) or an input control displayed ondisplay126. Alternatively, separate remote control units can be provided for each air chamber and can each include the ability to control multiple air chambers. Pressure increase and decrease

129 and130 can allow a user to increase or decrease the pressure, respectively, in the air chamber selected with theoutput selecting mechanism128. Adjusting the pressure within the selected air chamber can cause a corresponding adjustment to the firmness of the respective air chamber. In some embodiments, theremote control122 can be omitted or modified as appropriate for an application. For example, in some embodiments the bed112 can be controlled by a computer, tablet, smart phone, or other device in wired or wireless communication with the bed112.

FIG. 2 is a block diagram of an example of various components of an air bed system. For example, these components can be used in the exampleair bed system100. As shown inFIG. 2, theair controller124 can include thepump120, apower supply134, aprocessor136, amemory137, aswitching mechanism138, and an analog to digital (A/D)converter140, an air manifold143 (having

valves

144,145A, and145B), and one ormore pressure transducers146. Theswitching mechanism138 can be, for example, a relay or a solid state switch.

Thepump120 can include amotor142. Thepump120 can be fluidly connected to the pump manifold, which is fluidically connected with thefirst air chamber114A and thesecond air chamber114B via afirst tube148A and asecond tube148B, respectively. The first and

145A and145B can be controlled by switchingmechanism138, and are operable to regulate the flow of fluid between thepump120 and first and

In some implementations, thepump120 and theair controller124 can be provided and packaged as a single unit. In some alternative implementations, thepump120 and theair controller124 can be provided as physically separate units. In some implementations, theair controller124, thepump120, or both are integrated within or otherwise contained within a bed frame or bed support structure that supports the bed112. In some implementations, theair controller124, thepump120, or both are located outside of a bed frame or bed support structure (as shown in the example inFIG. 1).

In some embodiments, thepump120 can be a positive displacement pump. In some of such embodiments, thepump120 can reduce or prevent back flow. In other embodiments, thepump120 can be of another type suitable for the application.

The exampleair bed system100 depicted inFIG. 2 includes the two

air chambers

114A and114B and thesingle pump120. However, other implementations can include an air bed system having two or more air chambers and one or more pumps incorporated into the air bed system to control the air chambers. For example, a separate pump can be associated with each air chamber of the air bed system or a pump can be associated with multiple chambers of the air bed system. Separate pumps can allow each air chamber to be inflated or deflated independently and simultaneously. Furthermore, additional pressure transducers can also be incorporated into the air bed system such that, for example, a separate pressure transducer can be associated with each air chamber.

In use, theprocessor136 can, for example, send a decrease pressure command for one of the

air chambers

114A or114B, and theswitching mechanism138 can be used to convert the low voltage command signals sent by theprocessor136 to higher operating voltages sufficient to operate therelief valve144 of thepump120 and open the

control valve

148A or148B. During deflation, thepressure transducer146 can send pressure readings to theprocessor136 via the A/D converter140. The A/D converter140 can receive analog information frompressure transducer146 and can convert the analog information to digital information useable by theprocessor136. Theprocessor136 can send the digital signal to theremote control122 to update thedisplay126 in order to convey the pressure information to the user. Alternatively, one or more of the

Theprojection184 can extend into a hole defined by thepost174, with thevibration isolator172 holding theprojection184 substantially centrally in that hole to reduce or prevent contact between thepost174 and theprojection184. This can allow theannular portion214 of thevibration isolator172 to dampen vibration of theflow control assembly161 in directions radial to the centerline axis CL.

Thevibration isolators172 can also be positioned on a bottom end of thepost174 and/or either or both ends of thepost176. For example, thevibration isolator172 can be positioned on a bottom end of thepost174, with thecircumferential portion212 wrapped around a circumferential portion of thepost174, theprojections222 abutting the bottom end of thepost174, and theprojections220 abutting the printed circuit board160 (shown inFIGS. 4-5). Theinner rim216 of theannular portion214 can abut theprojection200 of thesupport structure196 which can hold theprojection200 substantially centrally in a hole defined by thepost174 to reduce or prevent contact between thepost174 and theprojection200. This can allow theannular portion214 of thevibration isolator172 to dampen vibration of theflow control assembly161 in directions radial to the centerline axis CL.

By positioning thevibration isolators172 between the

posts

174 and176 of theflow control assembly161 and each of the supporting

structures

180,182,196, and198, theflow control assembly161 can be mounted in thehousing150 while reducing noise caused by vibration of theflow control assembly161. In some cases, the configuration of thevibration isolators172 can allow for relatively easy assembly, as thevibration isolators172 can be slipped over the ends of the supporting

structures

180,182,196, and198 and hold theflow control assembly161 in place without requiring additional fasteners other than the those already being used to secure thehousing top152 to thehousing bottom154.

A number of embodiments of the invention have been described. Nevertheless, it will be understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For example, in some cases the manifold143 need not include the posts as illustrated, but rather, the flow control assembly can include other mounting structures suitable for the application. Moreover, one or more features present on one or more of the various embodiments can be considered optional, and need not necessarily be included in all embodiments. Accordingly, other embodiments are within the scope of the following claims.

Claims

1. An air bed system comprising:

a mattress comprising a first inflatable air chamber; and

an air controller fluidly connected to the first inflatable air chamber of the mattress for inflating and deflating the first inflatable air chamber, the air controller comprising:

an air pump;

a flow control assembly fluidly connected between the air pump and the first inflatable air chamber; and

first and second supporting structures, wherein the flow control assembly is supported by a plurality of vibration isolators between the first and second supporting structure and the air controller.

2. The air bed system ofclaim 1, wherein the air controller comprises a housing having a housing top and a housing bottom, wherein the first supporting structure is part of the housing top and the second supporting structure is part of the housing bottom, and wherein the vibration isolators reduce transmission of vibration from the flow control assembly to the housing compared to the air controller being in direct contact with the first or second supporting structure.

3. The air bed system ofclaim 1, wherein the flow control assembly comprises an air manifold and a plurality of valves connected to the air manifold.

4. The air bed system ofclaim 3, wherein the air manifold comprises a first vertical post having a first post top and a first post bottom and a second vertical post having a second post top and a second post bottom, wherein the plurality of vibration isolators are positioned between the post ends and the supporting structures.

5. The air bed system ofclaim 4, wherein the plurality of valves are rigidly mounted to the air manifold along a length of the air manifold between the first vertical post and the second vertical post.

6. The air bed system ofclaim 3, wherein the valves comprise solenoid valves rigidly mounted to the air manifold and wherein the air pump comprises a positive displacement pump spaced from the air manifold and connected to the air manifold via a tube.

7. The air bed system ofclaim 1, wherein the air controller comprises a housing having a housing top and a housing bottom, wherein the first supporting structure is part of the housing top and the second supporting structure is part of the housing bottom, wherein a threaded fastener extends through holes defined by the housing bottom, the plurality of vibration isolators, the flow control assembly, and the housing top to connect the housing top to the housing bottom and to retain the flow control assembly within the housing.

8. The air bed system ofclaim 1, wherein the plurality of vibration isolators each comprise a cylindrical portion extending substantially circumferentially about an axis and an annular portion extending substantially radially with respect to the axis and having an inner rim that defines a hole and an outer rim connected to an end of the cylindrical portion.

9. The air bed system ofclaim 8, wherein the annular portion comprises a first set of projections extending from a first side of the annular portion and a second set of projections extending from a second side of the annular portion, wherein the second side is positioned opposite the first side.

10. The air bed system ofclaim 9, wherein the first set of projections each extend radially from the inner rim to the outer rim and the second set of projections are shaped differently than the first set of projections.

11. The air bed system ofclaim 10, wherein the second set of projections are positioned proximate to and spaced from an inner surface of the cylindrical portion.

12. The air bed system ofclaim 10, wherein the flow control assembly comprises a first vertical post having a first post top and a first post bottom, wherein one of the plurality of vibration isolators is positioned between the first post top and the first supporting structure with the cylindrical portion wrapped around a circumferential portion of the first post top with the second set of projections abutting an end of the first post top, the first set of projections abutting the first supporting structure, and the inner rim abutting the first supporting structure.

13. The air bed system ofclaim 12, wherein a second of the plurality of vibration isolators is positioned between the first post bottom and the second supporting structure with the cylindrical portion of the second of the plurality of vibration isolators wrapped around a circumferential portion of the first post bottom, with the second set of projections of the second supporting structure abutting an end of the first post bottom, the first set of projections of the second of the plurality of vibration isolators abutting a printed circuit board, and the inner rim of the second of the plurality of vibration isolators abutting the second supporting structure.

14. The air bed system ofclaim 9, wherein the flow control assembly comprises a post having a post end, wherein one of the plurality of vibration isolators is positioned between the post end and the first supporting structure with the cylindrical portion wrapped around a circumferential portion of the post, with the second set of projections abutting the post end, with the first set of projections abutting the first supporting structure, and with the inner rim abutting the first supporting structure.

15. The air bed system ofclaim 8, wherein the flow control assembly comprises a post having a post end, wherein one of the plurality of vibration isolators is positioned between the post end and the first supporting structure with the cylindrical portion wrapped around a circumferential portion of the post, with the annular portion abutting the post end and the first supporting structure.

16. The air bed system ofclaim 1, wherein the vibrations isolators comprise an elastomer.

17. An air controller comprising:

an air pump;

a flow control assembly having an air manifold fluidly connected to the air pump and a plurality of valves mounted to the air manifold;

a housing comprising a housing top having a first supporting structure and a housing bottom having a second supporting structure, wherein the flow control assembly is supported between the first and second supporting structures; and

a plurality of vibration isolators positioned between the first or second supporting structure and the flow control assembly or air pump.

18. The air controller ofclaim 17, wherein the each of the plurality of vibration isolators comprise a cylindrical portion extending substantially circumferentially about an axis and an annular portion extending substantially radially with respect to the axis and having an inner rim that defines a hole and an outer rim connected to an end of the cylindrical portion and wherein the annular portion comprises a first set of projections extending from a first side of the annular portion and a second set of projections extending from a second side of the annular portion, wherein the second side is positioned opposite the first side.

19. An air controller comprising:

an air pump;

a housing comprising a first support structure and a second support structure; and

means for dampening transmission of vibration from the flow control assembly or air pump to the housing.

20. The air controller ofclaim 19, wherein the manifold includes a first vertical post that extends along an axis and has a first post top and a first post bottom opposite to the first post top along the axis, the means positioned between and supported by the first supporting structure and the first post top.

21. The air controller ofclaim 20, wherein the means for damping transmission of vibration is a first means for damping transmission of vibration, wherein the manifold includes a second vertical post that extends along an axis and has a second post top and a second post bottom opposite to the second post top along the axis, the air controller further comprising a second means for dampening transmission of vibration from the flow control assembly to the housing, the second means positioned between and supported by the second supporting structure and the second post top.
