Abstract

Mechanisms are provided to allow for improved media content navigation. Metadata such as closed captioning, social media content, and tags associated with various media segments are analyzed to allow identification of particular entities depicted in the various media segments. Image recognition and audio recognition algorithms can also be performed to further identify entities or validate results from the analysis of metadata.

Description

Claims (20)

What is claimed is:
1. A method comprising:
receiving, from a user, a search term for media content;
identifying a plurality of entities associated with the search term;
identifying a plurality of media segments corresponding to the plurality of entities after receiving the search term from the user, the plurality of media segments including a video result comprising a video track, an audio track, a metadata track, and a relevance score;
comparing the relevance score of each of the plurality of media segments to a threshold relevance score;
determining a subset of the plurality of media segments, wherein each of the media segments within the subset has a relevance score higher than the threshold relevance score;
displaying the subset of the plurality of media segments, wherein the subset is displayed as one or more time-based thumbnails and content corresponding to the thumbnails, the one or more time-based thumbnails comprising identifiers for each of the media segments within the subset;
receiving a selection of a first identifier to trigger playback of a first media segment within the subset of the plurality of media segments;
playing back the first media segment;
tracking a percentage of the first media segment viewed by the user;
determining that the percentage exceeds a first threshold percentage; and
increasing the relevance score of the first media segment based on the determining that the percentage exceeds the first threshold percentage.
2. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the media content comprises a video stream.
3. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the media content comprises a video clip.
4. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the identifiers are markers associated with start time position information for each of the plurality of media segments.
5. The method ofclaim 1, further comprising:
scanning the plurality of media segments, wherein scanning the plurality of media segments includes analyzing metadata included in the metadata track, wherein analyzing metadata includes analyzing closed captions, chat data, and social media;
tagging the plurality of media segments with a plurality of identifiers, each of the identifiers indicating time positions of media content associated with the search term; and
validating the tagged media segments to verify that the tagged media segments include the plurality of entities associated with the search term.
6. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the plurality of entities comprise characters, objects, places, action sequences, and romantic scenes.
7. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the plurality of media segments are a plurality of portions of a video program or movie.
8. A system comprising:
an interface operable to receive from a user a search term for media;
a processor operable to identify a plurality of entities corresponding to the search term, wherein the plurality of entities can include characters, objects, places, action sequences, and romantic scenes;
wherein the processor is further operable to:
receive, from the interface, a search term for media content;
identify a plurality of entities associated with the search term;
identify a plurality of media segments corresponding to the plurality of entities after receiving the search term from the user, the plurality of media segments including a video result comprising a video track, an audio track, a metadata track, and a relevance score;
compare the relevance score of each of the plurality of media segments to a threshold relevance score;
determine a subset of the plurality of media segments, wherein each of the media segments within the subset has a relevance score higher than the threshold relevance score;
display the subset of the plurality of media segments, wherein the subset is displayed as one or more time-based thumbnails and content corresponding to the thumbnails, the one or more time-based thumbnails comprising identifiers for each of the media segments within the subset;
receive a selection of a first identifier to trigger playback of a first media segment within the subset of the plurality of media segments;
playing back the first media segment;
track a percentage of the first media segment viewed by the user;
determine that the percentage is below a first threshold percentage; and
decrease the relevance score of the first media segment based on the determining that the percentage is below the first threshold percentage;
a display operable to show only the subset of the identified plurality of media segments, wherein the display is operable to display the subset as one or more time-based thumbnails and content corresponding to the thumbnails, the one or more time-based thumbnails comprising identifiers for each of the media segments within the subset.
9. The system ofclaim 8, wherein the media content comprises a video stream.
10. The system ofclaim 8, wherein the media content comprises a video clip.
11. The system ofclaim 8, wherein the identifiers are markers associated with start time position information for each of the plurality of media segments.
12. The system ofclaim 8, wherein the processor is further operable to:
scan the plurality of media segments, wherein scanning the plurality of media segments includes analyzing metadata included in the metadata track, wherein analyzing metadata includes analyzing closed captions, chat data, and social media;
tag the plurality of media segments with a plurality of identifiers, each of the identifiers indicating time positions of media content associated with the search term; and
validate the tagged media segments to verify that the tagged media segments include the plurality of entities associated with the search term.
13. The system ofclaim 8, wherein the subset of the plurality of media segments is displayed in an order based on their relevance scores.
14. The system ofclaim 8, wherein the plurality of media segments are a plurality of portions of a video program or movie.
