Abstract

An embodiment communication system and method adaptively use a secondary cell under the control of a primary cell for communicating with a user device. The secondary cell and the user device communicate based on instructions provided to both by the primary cell. To reduce interference and minimize power usage, the communications channel for the secondary cell is normally off.

Description

Claims (25)

What is claimed is:
1. A method comprising:
providing, by a second communications controller, a second communications channel, in response to a first trigger command from a first communications controller providing a first communications channel; and
communicating, by the second communications controller with a user equipment (UE) using the second communications channel, the UE receiving a reference signal from the first communications controller on the first communications channel, the reference signal including a second trigger command for the UE to communicate using the second communications channel.
2. The method ofclaim 1, the first communications controller comprising a cell site.
3. The method ofclaim 1, the second communications controller comprising a cell site, a femtocell, a picocell, a microcell or a WiFi network.
4. The method ofclaim 1, the second communications controller communicating with the first communications controller via at least one backhaul line.
5. The method ofclaim 1, the second trigger command being aperiodic.
6. The method ofclaim 1, further comprising sending, by the second communications controller, the reference signal in response to the first trigger command, the reference signal causing the UE to send a channel status indicator (CSI) to the first communications controller.
7. The method ofclaim 1, the first trigger command being provided in a CSI request.
8. The method ofclaim 1, the first trigger command being provided in a sounding reference signal (SRS) trigger.
9. The method ofclaim 1, the first trigger command including a command instructing the second communications controller when to turn the second communications channel off.
10. The method ofclaim 1, an indicator being sent by the first communications controller to the UE of when the second communications channel will be turned off.
11. The method ofclaim 1, a bitmap in a radio resource control (RRC) signal being sent from the first communications controller to the UE indicating an on/off status of the second communications controller.
12. The method ofclaim 1, an on-off state of the second communications controller being transmitted in a downlink control information (DCI) message to the UE.
13. A method comprising:
communicating, by a user equipment (UE), with a first communications controller using a first communications channel, the first communications controller providing a first trigger command to a second communications controller to cause the second communications controller to provide a second communications channel;
receiving, by the UE, from the first communications controller on the first communications channel, a reference signal including a second trigger command; and
communicating, by the UE, with the second communications controller using the second communications channel, in response to the second trigger command.
14. The method ofclaim 13, the first communications controller comprising a cell site.
15. The method ofclaim 13, the second communications controller comprising a cell site, a femtocell, a picocell, a microcell or a WiFi network.
16. The method ofclaim 13, the first communications controller and the second communications controller being communicatively connected by at least one backhaul line.
17. The method ofclaim 13, the second trigger command being aperiodic.
18. The method ofclaim 13, further comprising:
receiving a reference signal from the second communications controller sent in response to the first trigger command, and
sending a channel status indicator (CSI) to the first communications controller in response to the reference signal.
19. The method ofclaim 13, the first trigger command being provided in a CSI request.
20. The method ofclaim 13, the first trigger command being provided in a sounding reference signal (SRS) trigger.
21. The method ofclaim 13, further comprising receiving an indicator for when the second communications channel will be turned off.
22. The method ofclaim 13, further comprising receiving a bitmap in a radio resource control (RRC) signal from the first communications controller indicating an on/off status of the second communications controller.
23. The method ofclaim 13, further comprising receiving an on-off state of the second communications controller in a downlink control information (DCI) message.
24. A second communications controller comprising:
a non-transitory memory storage comprising instructions; and
one or more processors in communication with the memory storage, wherein the one or more processors execute the instructions to:
provide a second communications channel, in response to a first trigger command from a first communications controller providing a first communications channel; and
communicate with a user equipment (UE) using the second communications channel, the UE receiving a reference signal from the first communications controller on the first communications channel, the reference signal including a second trigger command for the UE to communicate using the second communications channel.
25. A user equipment (UE) comprising:
a non-transitory memory storage comprising instructions; and
one or more processors in communication with the memory storage, wherein the one or more processors execute the instructions to:
communicate with a first communications controller using a first communications channel, the first communications controller providing a first trigger command to a second communications controller to cause the second communications controller to provide a second communications channel;
receive, from the first communications controller on the first communications channel, a reference signal including a second trigger command; and
communicate with the second communications controller using the second communications channel, in response to the second trigger command.
