Abstract

Provided according to embodiments of the invention are photoplethysmography probes designed for use on a user's nasal alar. Methods of using such photoplethysmography probes are also provided herein.

Description

Claims (15)

We claim:
1. A nasal pulse oximetry probe comprising
a first insert that secures inside an individual's first nostril and has a first channel defined therein,
a second insert that secures inside the individual's second nostril and has a second channel defined therein,
a light generating source positioned on or in a medial wall of the first insert, and
a photodetector positioned on or in a medial wall of the second insert.
2. The nasal pulse oximetry probe ofclaim 1, wherein the light generating source is a light emitting diode.
3. The nasal pulse oximetry probe ofclaim 1, wherein the first channel and second channel are of a dimension to allow for the passage of air as the individual inhales and exhales out of the individual's nose.
4. The nasal pulse oximetry probe ofclaim 1, wherein the first insert does not define a full circumference around the first channel, the second insert does not define a full circumference around the second channel, or both.
5. The nasal pulse oximetry probe ofclaim 1, further comprising a first wire connected to the light generating source and a second wire connected to the photodetector.
6. The nasal pulse oximetry probe ofclaim 5, wherein the first wire and the second wire are covered and fastened together by a sleeve to form a combined wire.
7. The nasal pulse oximetry sensor ofclaim 1, wherein the light generating source is positioned to emit light through and the photodetector is positioned to detect light from the individual's nasal septum.
8. A mask that incorporates a nasal pulse oximetry probe comprising
a mask compartment;
an air hose; and
a nasal pulse oximetry probe, wherein the nasal oximetry probe comprises a first insert that secures inside an individual's first nostril and has a first channel defined therein, a second insert that secures inside the individual's second nostril and has a second channel defined therein, a light generating source positioned on or in a medial wall of the first insert, and a photodetector positioned on or in a medial wall of the second insert.
9. The mask ofclaim 8, further comprising a first wire connected to the light generating source and a second wire connected to the photodetector.
10. The mask ofclaim 9, wherein the first wire and the second wire are covered and fastened together by a sleeve to form a combined wire.
11. The mask ofclaim 8, wherein the first wire and the second wire pass through a hole defined in the mask compartment.
12. The mask ofclaim 8, wherein the light generating source is a light emitting diode.
13. The mask ofclaim 8, wherein the first channel and second channel are of a dimension to allow for the passage of air as the individual inhales and exhales out of the individual's nose.
14. The mask ofclaim 8, wherein the first insert does not define a full circumference around the first channel, the second insert does not define a full circumference around the second channel, or both.
15. The mask ofclaim 8, wherein the light generating source is positioned to emit light through and the photodetector is positioned to detect light from the individual's nasal septum.
