MODE OF CONSTRUCTING FIREPLACES AND CI-IIMNEY-STACKS IN BUILDINGS.k

Specification of Letters Patent No. 2,016, dated March 26, 1841.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY R. SAwYER, of the city of New York, county of New York, *and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Fireplaces and Chimney-Stacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of fireplaces and chimney stacks, in corner or other stores, or buildings of any description, at any story, without a chimney stack substructure from below.

My stack constructio-ns are to be built on an iron or other metallic shoe or plate of suitable dimensions, resting or brick or stone walls, or composite, brick, or sto-ne piers, or stone or metal columns or pillars of the building; upon which shoe or plate an arch or brick, or stone, or metal, or composition is turned, abutting against the trimmer of floor. On the inner end of this arch. the stack is raised, and horizontally over the arch I construct the hearth. The shoe is secured with bo-lts to trimmer pieces on either side, and is supported by the column or pier, &c., which column or pier rests upon the sill course, or wall below, or foundation wall of the building.

To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use by invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

First, I build a pier or column or pilaster A, resting on the sill course or wall B, below or foundation wall. NeXt I construct my trimmers or plates C, resting on brick or stone piers, or stone, iron, or other metal or composite columns or pilasters, which brick or stone piers 6to. are supported by a con-.

tinuation of the sill course or foundation wall B, and I continue the said trimmer to within a short distance of the proposed chimney stack D; I then connect them with aniron, or other metal shoe or plate E, by means of strong metal bolts, as shown on plan F, said shoe being lapped and bolted on to the plates o-r trimmers C, and resting on the pier, pilaster or column A. Upon the iron or metal shoe or bearer E, I turn my brick, or stone, or metal, or composition arch G,abutting against the short trimmer of floor H; upon this arch at the end neXt the iron or metal shoe, I build my chimney stack, and horizontally over the arch I construct the hearth.

lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The mode of constructing a foundation for v chimneys in buildings where no chimney stack has been constructed below; by turning the arch of the hearth at its inner end, on an iron or other metal shoe secured to trimmer pieces o-n either side; said shoe be ing supported on a column or pier, which column or pier rests upon the sill course or wall below, or foundation wall of the building, the whole being constructed and operating as herein specified,
