Abstract

The present invention is a gas burner having a mixture plenum that receives a gas air mixture. A port plenum is positioned above the mixture plenum. The port plenum comprises a plurality of ports for combustion of the gas air mixture. A quenching plate is positioned between the mixture plenum and the port plenum to separate the mixture plenum from the port plenum. The quenching plate comprises a plurality of apertures. The gas air mixture flows through the plurality of apertures and from the mixture plenum to the port plenum. The plenum, quenching plate and apertures retard back flow and auto ignition, and the quenching plate will quench a flame in the event of back flow.

Description

Claims (18)

What is claimed:
1. A gas burner, comprising:
a mixture plenum constructed and arranged to receive a gas air mixture;
a port plenum positioned above the mixture plenum, the port plenum comprising a plurality of ports constructed and arranged to discharge the gas air mixture for combustion;
a quenching plate positioned between and separating the mixture plenum and the port plenum, the quenching plate comprising a plurality of apertures, the quenching plate and apertures constructed and arranged to quench a flame, wherein the gas air mixture flows through the plurality of apertures and from the mixture plenum to the port plenum.
2. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein a pressure of the gas air mixture across a surface of the quenching plate is controlled by varying a density of the apertures across the surface of the quenching plate.
3. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein a pressure of the gas air mixture across a surface of the quenching plate is controlled by varying sizes of the apertures across the surface of the quenching plate.
4. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein a volume of the port plenum is less than a volume of the mixture plenum.
5. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the quenching plate comprises a plurality of spaced apart screens.
6. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the quenching plate comprises a plurality of perforations along a length of the quenching plate.
7. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the burner is positioned in a gas fueled heating device, and the gas fueled heating device comprises an infrared energy emitter that is positioned to receive heat from the burner.
8. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the port plenum is positioned beside the mixture plenum.
9. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the port plenum is positioned in the combustion zone of a gas fueled heating device and the mixture plenum is positioned outside the combustion zone of the gas fueled heating device.
10. A gas burner, comprising:
a mixture plenum constructed and arranged to receive a gas air mixture;
a port plenum positioned above the mixture plenum, the port plenum comprising a plurality of ports constructed and arranged to discharge the gas air mixture for combustion;
a quenching plate positioned between and separating the mixture plenum and the port plenum, the quenching plate comprising a plurality of apertures, the quenching plate and apertures constructed and arranged to quench a flame, wherein the gas air mixture flows through the plurality of apertures and from the mixture plenum to the port plenum, and wherein, in use, a temperature in the port plenum is above an auto ignition temperature of the gas air mixture and the temperature in the mixture plenum is below the auto ignition temperature of the gas air mixture.
11. A gas burner as described inclaim 10, wherein a pressure of the gas air mixture across a surface of the quenching plate is controlled by varying a density of the apertures across the surface of the quenching plate.
12. A gas burner as described inclaim 10, wherein a pressure of the gas air mixture across a surface of the quenching plate is controlled by varying a size of the apertures across the surface of the quenching plate.
13. A gas burner as described inclaim 10, wherein a volume of the port plenum is less than a volume of the mixture plenum.
14. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the quenching plate comprises a plurality of spaced apart screens.
15. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the quenching plate comprises a plurality of perforations along a length of the quenching plate.
16. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the burner is positioned in a gas fueled heating device, and the gas fueled heating device comprises an infrared energy emitter that is positioned to receive heat from the burner.
17. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the port plenum positioned beside the mixture plenum.
18. A gas burner as described inclaim 1, wherein the port plenum is positioned in the combustion zone of a gas fueled heating device and the mixture plenum is positioned outside the combustion zone of the gas fueled heating device.
