Abstract

A computer system can be controlled with non-contact inputs, such as eye-tracking devices. A computer can enlarge a portion of a display adjacent a first gaze target in response to detecting a first action (e.g., pressing a touchpad). The computer can then allow a user to position a second gaze target in the enlarged portion (e.g., by looking at the desired location) and perform a second action in order to perform a computer function at that location. The enlarging can allow a user to identify a desired location for a computer function (e.g., selecting an icon) with greater precision.

Description

Claims (28)

What is claimed is:
1. A method of controlling a computer, comprising:
presenting a display to a user;
determining a first gaze target of the user with respect to the display;
detecting a first action;
enlarging at least a portion of the display approximately adjacent the gaze target in response to detecting the first action;
determining a second gaze target of the user with respect to the enlarged portion of the display;
detecting a second action;
performing a computer function associated with the second gaze target.
2. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the second action is the first action performed a second time.
3. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the first action is depressing a button.
4. The method ofclaim 3, wherein the second action is releasing the button.
5. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the first action is touching a touch-sensitive device.
6. The method ofclaim 5, wherein the second action is ceasing to touch the touch-sensitive device.
7. The method ofclaim 2, wherein the first action is speaking a word.
8. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the enlarging at least the portion of the display is in response to detecting the first action while the gaze target is located adjacent a number of elements.
9. The method ofclaim 1, additionally comprising highlighting an element on the display that is located adjacent the first gaze target.
10. The method ofclaim 1, additionally comprising highlighting an element on the display that is located adjacent the second gaze target.
11. The method ofclaim 1, wherein enlarging at least the portion of the display is based on at least one selected from the group consisting of properties of elements of the display, preferences of the user, and information relating to a gaze of the user.
12. The method ofclaim 11, wherein the enlarging at least the portion of the display is based on properties of elements including the shape, the size, and the layout of elements on the display.
13. The method ofclaim 11, wherein the enlarging at least the portion of the display is based on a user preference selected from the group consisting of speed, accuracy, and avoidance of certain computer functions.
14. The method ofclaim 11, wherein the enlarging at least the portion of the display is based on information relating to the gaze of the user selected from the group consisting of calibration information, gaze offset information, signal noise, type of eye tracking device used, and frequency of eye tracking device used.
15. A computing device, comprising:
a computer including a display device for presenting a display and a non-contact input for detecting a non-contact action;
wherein the computer is programmed to:
detect a non-contact target on the display through the non-contact input;
detect a first action;
enlarge at least a portion of the display approximately adjacent the non-contact target in response to detection of the first action;
detect a second action; and
perform a computer function associated with the non-contact target in response to detection of the second action while the non-contact target is within the portion of the display.
16. The computing device ofclaim 15, wherein the non-contact input is an eye-tracking device and the non-contact target is a gaze target.
17. The computing device ofclaim 15, wherein the computer additionally includes a contact-required input.
18. The computing device ofclaim 15, wherein the second action is a second instance of the first action.
19. The computing device ofclaim 18, wherein the contact-required input is operable to detect the first action.
20. The computing device ofclaim 19, wherein the first action is depressing a button.
21. The computing device ofclaim 19, wherein the first action is touching a touch-sensitive device.
22. The computing device ofclaim 15, wherein the first action is speaking a word.
23. The computing device ofclaim 15, wherein the computer is programmed to enlarge at least the portion of the display in response to detection of the first action only while the gaze target is located adjacent a number of small elements of the display.
24. A system, comprising:
a computer including
a display device for presenting a display;
an eye-tracking device for detecting eye indications;
a processor operably connected to the eye-tracking device and display device; and
programming enabling the processor to:
determine a gaze target from the eye indications;
detect a first action;
enlarge at least a portion of the display approximately adjacent the gaze target in response to detection of the first action;
detect a second action; and
perform a computer function associated with the gaze target in response to detection of the second action while the gaze target is within the portion of the display.
25. The system ofclaim 24, wherein the second action is a second instance of the first action.
26. The system ofclaim 25, wherein the first action is a button press.
27. The system ofclaim 25, wherein the first action is a touch of a touch-sensitive device.
28. The system ofclaim 24, wherein the programming enables the processor to enlarge at least the portion of the display in response to detection of the first action only while the gaze target Is located adjacent a number of small elements of the display.
