CROSS-REFERENCES TO RELATED APPLICATIONSThis application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. § 119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application Ser. No. 60/901,569 filed Feb. 15, 2007.
The present application relates to benefit agent delivery compositions, compositions, packaged products and displays comprising such benefit agent delivery compositions, and processes for making and using such benefit agent delivery compositions, compositions, packaged products and displays.
Benefit agents, such as perfumes, brighteners, insect repellants, silicones, waxes, flavors, vitamins, cooling agents, fabric softening agents and skin care agents are expensive and may be less effective when employed at high levels in personal care compositions, cleaning compositions, and fabric care compositions. As a result, there is a desire to maximize the effectiveness of such benefit agents. One method of achieving such objective is to improve the delivery efficiencies of such benefit agents. Unfortunately, it is difficult to improve the delivery efficiencies of benefit agents as such agents may be lost do to the agents' physical or chemical characteristics, such agents may be incompatible with other compositional components or the situs that is treated, or such agents may be lost during post application processes such as rinsing or drying.
Accordingly, there is a need for a benefit agent delivery composition that provides improved benefit agent delivery efficiency. While not being bound by theory, applicants believe that the benefit agent delivery compositions disclosed herein meet such need as such compositions have increased deposition and retention properties which result in the desired increase in benefit agent delivery efficiency.
Benefit agent delivery compositions, compositions, packaged products and displays comprising such benefit agent delivery compositions, and processes for making and using such benefit agent delivery compositions, compositions, packaged products and displays.
As used herein “consumer product” means baby care, beauty care, fabric & home care, family care, feminine care, health care, snack and/or beverage products or devices intended to be used or consumed in the form in which it is sold, and not intended for subsequent commercial manufacture or modification. Such products include but are not limited to diapers, bibs, wipes; products for and/or methods relating to treating hair (human, dog, and/or cat), including, bleaching, coloring, dyeing, conditioning, shampooing, styling; deodorants and antiperspirants; personal cleansing; cosmetics; skin care including application of creams, lotions, and other topically applied products for consumer use; and shaving products, products for and/or methods relating to treating fabrics, hard surfaces and any other surfaces in the area of fabric and home care, including: air care, car care, dishwashing, fabric conditioning (including softening), laundry detergency, laundry and rinse additive and/or care, hard surface cleaning and/or treatment, and other cleaning for consumer or institutional use; products and/or methods relating to bath tissue, facial tissue, paper handkerchiefs, and/or paper towels; tampons, feminine napkins; products and/or methods relating to oral care including toothpastes, tooth gels, tooth rinses, denture adhesives, tooth whitening; over-the-counter health care including cough and cold remedies, pain relievers, RX pharmaceuticals, pet health and nutrition, and water purification; processed food products intended primarily for consumption between customary meals or as a meal accompaniment (non-limiting examples include potato chips, tortilla chips, popcorn, pretzels, corn chips, cereal bars, vegetable chips or crisps, snack mixes, party mixes, multigrain chips, snack crackers, cheese snacks, pork rinds, corn snacks, pellet snacks, extruded snacks and bagel chips); and coffee.
As used herein, the term “cleaning and/or treatment composition” includes, unless otherwise indicated, granular or powder-form all-purpose or “heavy-duty” washing agents, especially cleaning detergents; liquid, gel or paste-form all-purpose washing agents, especially the so-called heavy-duty liquid types; liquid fine-fabric detergents; hand dishwashing agents or light duty dishwashing agents, especially those of the high-foaming type; machine dishwashing agents, including the various tablet, granular, liquid and rinse-aid types for household and institutional use; liquid cleaning and disinfecting agents, including antibacterial hand-wash types, cleaning bars, mouthwashes, denture cleaners, dentifrice, car or carpet shampoos, bathroom cleaners; hair shampoos and hair-rinses; shower gels and foam baths and metal cleaners; as well as cleaning auxiliaries such as bleach additives and “stain-stick” or pre-treat types, substrate-laden products such as dryer added sheets, dry and wetted wipes and pads, nonwoven substrates, and sponges; as well as sprays and mists.
As used herein, the term “fabric care composition” includes, unless otherwise indicated, fabric softening compositions, fabric enhancing compositions, fabric freshening compositions and combinations there of.
As used herein, the term “amine” includes, unless otherwise indicated, primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary amines.
As used herein, the articles “a” and “an” when used in a claim, are understood to mean one or more of what is claimed or described.
As used herein, the terms “include”, “includes” and “including” are meant to be synonymous with the phrase “including but not limited to”.
As used herein, the term “solid” includes granular, powder, bar and tablet product forms.
As used herein, the term “situs” includes paper products, fabrics, garments, hard surfaces, hair and skin.
The test methods disclosed in the Test Methods Section of the present application should be used to determine the respective values of the parameters of Applicants' inventions.
Unless otherwise noted, all component or composition levels are in reference to the active portion of that component or composition, and are exclusive of impurities, for example, residual solvents or by-products, which may be present in commercially available sources of such components or compositions.
All percentages and ratios are calculated by weight unless otherwise indicated. All percentages and ratios are calculated based on the total composition unless otherwise indicated.
It should be understood that every maximum numerical limitation given throughout this specification includes every lower numerical limitation, as if such lower numerical limitations were expressly written herein. Every minimum numerical limitation given throughout this specification will include every higher numerical limitation, as if such higher numerical limitations were expressly written herein. Every numerical range given throughout this specification will include every narrower numerical range that falls within such broader numerical range, as if such narrower numerical ranges were all expressly written herein.
In one aspect, a benefit agent delivery composition that may comprise:
- a.) a benefit agent such as a perfume and/or an encapsulated perfume, or in one aspect, a perfume comprising an aldehyde and/or ketone moiety and an encapsulated perfume; and
- b.) a carrier comprising a material selected from the group consisting of:
- (i) a reaction product of a polyamine comprising at least one primary or secondary amine and a material selected from the group consisting of a monofunctional isocyanate, an epoxide and mixtures thereof;
- (ii) a combination of a carboxyl-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) and a polyamine;
- (iii) a carboxyl-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile);
- (iv) an amine-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile); and
- (v) mixtures thereof
is disclosed.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise a material selected from the reaction product of a polyamine comprising at least one primary or secondary amine and a material selected from the group consisting of a monofunctional isocyanate, an epoxide and mixtures thereof.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise the reaction product of a polyamine comprising at least one primary or secondary amine and a monofunctional isocyanate.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise the reaction product of a polyamine comprising at least one primary or secondary amine and an epoxide.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise the reaction product of a polyamine comprising at least one primary or secondary amine and a monofunctional isocyanate and an epoxide.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise:
- a.) a polyamine comprising at least one primary or secondary amine that is selected from the group consisting of polyalkylamines, polyallylamines, polyvinylamines, amine terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile)s, polyamino-substituted polysaccharides, amino functionalized polydialkylsiloxanes, polyaminoalkyls, poly(amino acids), bis(3-aminopropyl)piperazine, N,N-Bis(3-aminopropyl)methylamine, tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and mixtures thereof; in one aspect, said polyalkylamine may comprise polyethyleneimine;
- b.) a monofunctional isocyanate that is selected from the group consisting of alkyl isocyanates, cyclohexylisocyanates, aromatic isocyanates and mixtures thereof, in one aspect, said alkyl isocyanates may be selected from the group consisting of octadecylisocyanate, hexylisocyanate and mixtures thereof;
- c.) an expoxide comprising a monoepoxide comprising a glycidyl ether, wherein said glycidyl ether can be selected from the group consisting of phenyl glycidyl ether; ethoxylated phenyl glycidyl ether and mixtures thereof; and/or a polyepoxide selected from the group consisting of polyethylene glycol diglicidylether, sorbitol polyglycidyl ether, polypropylene glycol diglycidylether; in one aspect, said sorbitol glycidyl ether can comprise polyglycidyl ether.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise a material selected from the group consisting of Table 1 perfumes, Table 2 perfumes, Table 3 perfumes and mixtures thereof.

In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise a benefit agent that may comprise an encapsulated perfume.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise an encapsulated perfume that is encapsulated by a shell comprising cross-linked melamine formaldehyde.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise an encapsulated perfume that may comprise a material selected from the group consisting of:
- a.) a perfume composition having a Clog P of less than 4.5, less than, 4.25, less than 4.0 or even less than 3.75;
- b.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, 60% or even at least 70% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 4.0;
- c.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 35%, at least 50% or even at least 60% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 3.5;
- d. a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 40% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 4.0 or even less than 3.5 and at least 1% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 2.0;
- e.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 40% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 4.0 or even less than 3.5 and at least 15% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 3.0;

In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may have a benefit agent to carrier ratio of from about 9:1 to about 1:9, from about 3:7 to about 7:3, or even from about 6:4 to about 4:6.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may comprise a carrier that may comprise a material selected from the group consisting of:
- a.) a reaction product of a polyamine comprising at least one primary or secondary amine and a material selected from the group consisting of a monofunctional isocyanate, an epoxide and mixtures thereof; wherein the ratio of said polyamine to said material is from about 1:9 to about 9:1, from about 1:4 to about 4:1 or even from about 1:2 to about 2:1 and the ratio of monofunctional isocyanate to epoxide is from about 0:1 to about 1:0, or from about 9:1 to about 1:9;
- b.) a combination of carboxyl-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) and a polyamine, wherein the ratio of carboxyl-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) to polyamine is from about 99:1 to about 1:99, from about 95:5 to about 5:95 or even from about 4:6 to 6:4;
- c.) a carboxyl-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile);
- d.) an amine-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile); and
- e.) mixtures thereof.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may have a Wet Adhesion Index of greater than or equal to about 2, greater than or equal to about 3 or even greater than or equal to about 4.
In one aspect, the aforementioned benefit delivery composition may have a viscosity of from about 250 cps to about 10,000,000 cps, from about 1000 cps to about 100,000 cps or even from about 1500 cps to about 50,000 cps.
In one aspect, a consumer product comprising an adjunct ingredient and, based on total consumer product weight, at least about 0.01%, from about 0.01% to about 80%, or even from about 0.02% to about 10% wt % of any variant of the aforementioned benefit agent delivery composition is disclosed.
In one aspect, the aforementioned consumer product may comprise any variant of the aforementioned benefit agent delivery composition and packaging, at least a portion of said benefit agent composition being attached or adhered to said packaging, is disclosed.
In one aspect, a display comprising any variant of the aforementioned benefit agent deliver composition and a display material, at least a portion of said composition being attached or adhered to said display material, is disclosed.
In one aspect, a consumer product comprising any variant of the aforementioned benefit agent delivery composition and a material selected from the group consisting of a surfactant, an enzyme, a polymer, a dye, a neat perfume, a perfume delivery system and mixtures thereof is disclosed.
In one aspect, a cleaning and/or treatment composition or fabric care composition comprising any variant of the aforementioned benefit agent deliver composition and at least one cleaning and/or treatment composition or fabric care adjunct ingredient is disclosed.
In one aspect, a method of treating and/or cleaning a situs, said method comprising
- a.) optionally washing and/or rinsing said situs;
- b.) contacting said situs with any variant of the aforementioned benefit agent deliver composition; and

Useful benefit materials include perfumes, brighteners, insect repellants, silicones, waxes, flavors, vitamins, fabric softening agents, skin care agents and mixtures thereof as well as encapsulated benefit materials including perfumes, brighteners, insect repellants, silicones, waxes, flavors, vitamins, fabric softening agents, skin care agents and mixtures thereof. Such encapsulates may comprise a core and a shell. Methods of making suitable encapsulates as well as suitable shell materials are described in U.S. Pat. No. 6,869,923 B1 and US Published Patent Applications Nos. 2005/0276831 A1 and 2007/020263 A1. In one aspect, the shell material may comprise cross-linked melamine formaldehyde. In one aspect, the encapsulated material is a perfume. In one aspect, said benefit agent delivery particles' core material may comprise a material selected from the group consisting of:
- a.) a perfume composition having a Clog P of less than 4.5, less than, 4.25, less than 4.0 or even less than 3.75;
- b.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, 60% or even 70% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 4.0;
- c.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, 35% or 50% or even 60% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 3.5;
- d. a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, 40% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 4.0 or even less than 3.5 and at least 1% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 2.0;
- e.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, 40% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 4.0 or even less than 3.5 and at least 15% perfume materials having a Clog P of less than 3.0;
- f.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 1% or even 2% of a butanoate ester and at least 1% of a pentanoate ester;
- g.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 2% or even 3% of an ester comprising an allyl moiety and at least 10%, 25% or even 30% of another perfume comprising an ester moiety;
- h.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 1% or even 5% of an aldehyde comprising an alkyl chain moiety;
- i.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 2% of a butanoate ester;
- j.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 1% of a pentanoate ester;
- k.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 3% of an ester comprising an allyl moiety and 1% of an aldehyde comprising an alkyl chain moiety;
- l.) a perfume composition comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 25% of a perfume comprising an ester moiety and 1% of an aldehyde comprising an alkyl chain moiety;
- m.) a perfume compositions comprising, based on total perfume composition weight, at least 2% or even 10% of a material selected from ionones, like 4-(2,6,6-trimethyl-1-cyclohexenyl)-3-buten-2-one, 4-(2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexenyl)-3-buten-2-one and 3-buten-2-one,3-methyl-4-(2,6,6-trimethyl-1-cyclohexen-2-yl)- and mixtures thereof;

Useful dendrimers comprising one or more amine moieties include macromolecular polymer having regular, dendritic branching with radial symmetry composed of an initiator core, interior layers (or generations) of repeating units, radially attached to the core and an exterior surface of terminal functional groups. The chemical structure of a dendrimer polyamine is well known to those of skill in the art (See: D. A. Tomalia and H. D. Durst (1993) in E. Weber (ed.) Topics in Current Chemistry, Vol. 165: Supramolecular Chemistry I-Directed Synthesis and Molecular Recognition, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, pp. 193-313). The terminal functional groups of “dendrimer polyamines” useful in the present invention can be primary amine groups, hydroxyl groups, carboxyl groups or protected thiol groups. “Dendrimer polyamines” useful in the present invention may further comprise one or more amide linkages between successive dendrimer generations and secondary or tertiary amines at the branch points that do not comprise amide linkages, wherein the branch point may comprise carbon-carbon bonds, carbon-oxygen-carbon bonds, or carbon-nitrogen-carbon bonds. Useful “dendrimer polyamines” include:
(1) polypropylenimine tetraamine dendrimer; polypropylenimine octaamine dendrimer; polypropylenimine hexadecaamine dendrimer; polypropylenimine dotriacontaamine dendrimer; polypropylenimine tetrahexacontaamine dendrimer and mixtures thereof; and

Useful poly(amino acids) include: polyamino acid (L-lysine/lauric acid in a molar ratio of 10/1); polyamino acid (L-lysine/aminocaproic acid/adipic acid in a molar ratio of 5/5/1),); polyamino acid (L-lysine/aminocaproic acid/ethylhexanoic acid in a molar ratio of 5/3/1); polyamino acid (polylysine-cocaprolactam); polylysine; polylysine hydrobromide; cross-linked polylysine and mixtures thereof. The benefit agent containing compositions disclosed in the present application may be made via the teachings of U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,451,751 B1, 6,972,276 B1, 6,764,986 B1, 6,740,713 B1 and the examples disclosed herein. Suitable forms for such benefit agent delivery compositions include, solids and fluids including agglomerates, emulsions, solutions, prills, beads and encapsulates. When employed to product a benefit agent delivery composition the particle size of the benefit agent delivery composition in said agglomerates, emulsions, solutions, prills, beads and encapsulates may be from about 0.1 microns to about 100 microns, from about 1 micron to about 60 microns or even from about 5 to about 40 microns. In addition to the foregoing, the benefit agent delivery compositions of the present invention may be further processed in accordance with the teachings of published US Patent Application No. 2007/0196502 A1 to yield a particle wherein the benefit agent delivery composition may comprise at least a portion or even all of one or more layers of the resulting particle.
Suitable equipment for use in the processes disclosed herein may include continuous stirred tank reactors, homogenizers, turbine agitators, recirculating pumps, paddle mixers, ploughshear mixers, ribbon blenders, vertical axis granulators and drum mixers, both in batch and, where available, in continuous process configurations, spray dryers, and extruders. Such equipment can be obtained from Lodige GmbH (Paderbom, Germany), Littleford Day, Inc. (Florence, Ky., U.S.A.), Forberg AS (Larvik, Norway), Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH (Weimar, Germany), Niro (Soeborg, Denmark), Hosokawa Bepex Corp. (Minneapolis, Minn., U.S.A.), Arde Barinco (New Jersey, U.S.A.).
Consumer product embodiments of the present invention may comprise at least one aspect of the benefit agent delivery compositions disclosed in the present specification. The benefit agent delivery compositions may be pre-formed prior to addition to the consumer product or in certain embodiments the components of the benefit delivery composition may be added simultaneously or sequentially to the consumer product. Such method of addition being described herein as “separate addition”. While the precise level of benefit agent delivery composition that is employed depends on the type and end use of the, consumer product, in one aspect a consumer product may comprise, based on total composition weight, at least about 0.01%, from about 0.01% to about 80%, or even from about 0.02% to about 10% wt % of a benefit agent delivery composition disclosed herein.

In one aspect, a consumer products including liquid detergents having a water content, based on total consumer product formulation weight, of from about 0% to about 15%, from about 0.5% to about 10% or even from about 1% to about 8% water are disclosed.
In one aspect, a consumer product comprising at least one embodiment of a benefit agent delivery composition disclosed herein and a material selected from the group consisting of a surfactant, an enzyme, a polymer, a dye, a neat perfume, a perfume delivery system in addition to Applicants' benefit agent delivery system and mixtures thereof is disclosed. Suitable perfume delivery systems are described in published U.S. Patent Application No. 2007/0275866 A1
In one aspect, the consumer product is a cleaning and/or treatment composition or fabric care composition that may comprise a benefit agent delivery composition disclosed in the present specification and at least one cleaning and/or treatment composition or fabric care adjunct ingredient.
In one aspect, a cleaning composition may comprise, from about 0.005% to about 5% weight % of such particle based on total cleaning composition weight of such particle. In one aspect, a fabric treatment composition may comprise, based on total fabric treatment composition weight from about 0.005% to about 20% of such particle.
Aspects of the invention include the use of the benefit agent delivery compositions of the present invention in laundry detergent compositions (e.g., TIDE™), hard surface cleaners (e.g., MR CLEAN™), automatic dishwashing liquids (e.g., CASCADE™), dishwashing liquids (e.g., DAWN™), and floor cleaners (e.g., SWIFFER™). Non-limiting examples of cleaning compositions may include those described in U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,515,705; 4,537,706; 4,537,707; 4,550,862; 4,561,998; 4,597,898; 4,968,451; 5,565,145; 5,929,022; 6,294,514; 6,376,445, 7,169,741 B2 and 7,297,674 B2 as well as in U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2005/0130864 A1. The cleaning compositions disclosed herein may be formulated such that, during use in aqueous cleaning operations, the wash water will have a pH of between about 6.5 and about 12, or between about 7.5 and 10.5. Liquid dishwashing product formulations typically have a pH between about 6.8 and about 9.0. Cleaning products are typically formulated to have a pH of from about 7 to about 12. Techniques for controlling pH at recommended usage levels include the use of buffers, alkalis, acids, etc., and are well known to those skilled in the art.
Fabric treatment compositions disclosed herein typically comprise a fabric softening active (“FSA”). Suitable fabric softening actives, include, but are not limited to, materials selected from the group consisting of quats, amines, fatty esters, sucrose esters, silicones, dispersible polyolefins, clays, polysaccharides, fatty oils, polymer latexes and mixtures thereof.
While not essential for each consumer product embodiment of the present invention, the non-limiting list of adjuncts illustrated hereinafter are suitable for use in the instant consumer products and may be desirably incorporated in certain embodiments of the invention, for example to assist or enhance performance, for treatment of the substrate to be cleaned, or to modify the aesthetics of the composition as is the case with perfumes, colorants, dyes or the like. The precise nature of these additional components, and levels of incorporation thereof, will depend on the physical form of the composition and the nature of the operation for which it is to be used. Suitable adjunct materials include, but are not limited to, surfactants, builders, chelating agents, dye transfer inhibiting agents, dispersants, enzymes, and enzyme stabilizers, catalytic materials, bleach activators, polymeric dispersing agents, clay soil removal/anti-redeposition agents, brighteners, suds suppressors, dyes, additional perfume and perfume delivery systems, structure elasticizing agents, thickeners/structurants, fabric softeners, carriers, hydrotropes, processing aids and/or pigments. In addition to the disclosure below, suitable examples of such other adjuncts and levels of use are found in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,576,282, 6,306,812 B1 and 6,326,348 B1 that are incorporated by reference.
As stated, the adjunct ingredients are not essential for each consumer product embodiment of the present invention. Thus, certain embodiments of Applicants' compositions do not contain one or more of the following adjuncts materials: bleach activators, surfactants, builders, chelating agents, dye transfer inhibiting agents, dispersants, enzymes, and enzyme stabilizers, catalytic metal complexes, polymeric dispersing agents, clay and soil removal/anti-redeposition agents, brighteners, suds suppressors, dyes, additional perfumes and perfume delivery systems, structure elasticizing agents, thickeners/structurants, fabric softeners, carriers, hydrotropes, processing aids and/or pigments. However, when one or more adjuncts is present, such one or more adjuncts may be present as detailed below:
Surfactants—The compositions according to the present invention can comprise a surfactant or surfactant system wherein the surfactant can be selected from nonionic and/or anionic and/or cationic surfactants and/or ampholytic and/or zwitterionic and/or semi-polar nonionic surfactants. The surfactant is typically present at a level of from about 0.1%, from about 1%, or even from about 5% by weight of the cleaning compositions to about 99.9%, to about 80%, to about 35%, or even to about 30% by weight of the cleaning compositions.
Builders—The compositions of the present invention can comprise one or more detergent builders or builder systems. When present, the compositions will typically comprise at least about 1% builder, or from about 5% or 10% to about 80%, 50%, or even 30% by weight, of said builder. Builders include, but are not limited to, the alkali metal, ammonium and alkanolammonium salts of polyphosphates, alkali metal silicates, alkaline earth and alkali metal carbonates, aluminosilicate builders polycarboxylate compounds. ether hydroxypolycarboxylates, copolymers of maleic anhydride with ethylene or vinyl methyl ether, 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene-2,4,6-trisulphonic acid, and carboxymethyl-oxysuccinic acid, the various alkali metal, ammonium and substituted ammonium salts of polyacetic acids such as ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and nitrilotriacetic acid, as well as polycarboxylates such as mellitic acid, succinic acid, oxydisuccinic acid, polymaleic acid, benzene 1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid, carboxymethyloxysuccinic acid, and soluble salts thereof.
Chelating Agents—The compositions herein may also optionally contain one or more copper, iron and/or manganese chelating agents. If utilized, chelating agents will generally comprise from about 0.1% by weight of the compositions herein to about 15%, or even from about 3.0% to about 15% by weight of the compositions herein.
Dye Transfer Inhibiting Agents—The compositions of the present invention may also include one or more dye transfer inhibiting agents. Suitable polymeric dye transfer inhibiting agents include, but are not limited to, polyvinylpyrrolidone polymers, polyamine N-oxide polymers, copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone and N-vinylimidazole, polyvinyloxazolidones and polyvinylimidazoles or mixtures thereof. When present in the compositions herein, the dye transfer inhibiting agents are present at levels from about 0.0001%, from about 0.01%, from about 0.05% by weight of the cleaning compositions to about 10%, about 2%, or even about 1% by weight of the cleaning compositions.
Dispersants—The compositions of the present invention can also contain dispersants. Suitable water-soluble organic materials are the homo- or co-polymeric acids or their salts, in which the polycarboxylic acid may comprise at least two carboxyl radicals separated from each other by not more than two carbon atoms.
Enzymes—The compositions can comprise one or more detergent enzymes which provide cleaning performance and/or fabric care benefits. Examples of suitable enzymes include, but are not limited to, hemicellulases, peroxidases, proteases, cellulases, xylanases, lipases, phospholipases, esterases, cutinases, pectinases, keratanases, reductases, oxidases, phenoloxidases, lipoxygenases, ligninases, pullulanases, tannases, pentosanases, malanases, β-glucanases, arabinosidases, hyaluronidase, chondroitinase, laccase, and amylases, or mixtures thereof. A typical combination is a cocktail of conventional applicable enzymes like protease, lipase, cutinase and/or cellulase in conjunction with amylase.
Enzyme Stabilizers—Enzymes for use in compositions, for example, detergents can be stabilized by various techniques. The enzymes employed herein can be stabilized by the presence of water-soluble sources of calcium and/or magnesium ions in the finished compositions that provide such ions to the enzymes.
Catalytic Metal Complexes—Applicants' compositions may include catalytic metal complexes. One type of metal-containing bleach catalyst is a catalyst system comprising a transition metal cation of defined bleach catalytic activity, such as copper, iron, titanium, ruthenium, tungsten, molybdenum, or manganese cations, an auxiliary metal cation having little or no bleach catalytic activity, such as zinc or aluminum cations, and a sequestrate having defined stability constants for the catalytic and auxiliary metal cations, particularly ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, ethylenediaminetetra(methyl-enephosphonic acid) and water-soluble salts thereof. Such catalysts are disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 4,430,243.
If desired, the compositions herein can be catalyzed by means of a manganese compound. Such compounds and levels of use are well known in the art and include, for example, the manganese-based catalysts disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,576,282.
Cobalt bleach catalysts useful herein are known, and are described, for example, in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,597,936 and 5,595,967. Such cobalt catalysts are readily prepared by known procedures, such as taught for example in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,597,936, and 5,595,967.
Compositions herein may also suitably include a transition metal complex of a macropolycyclic rigid ligand—abbreviated as “MRL”. As a practical matter, and not by way of limitation, the compositions and cleaning processes herein can be adjusted to provide on the order of at least one part per hundred million of the benefit agent MRL species in the aqueous washing medium, and may provide from about 0.005 ppm to about 25 ppm, from about 0.05 ppm to about 10 ppm, or even from about 0.1 ppm to about 5 ppm, of the MRL in the wash liquor.
Preferred transition-metals in the instant transition-metal bleach catalyst include manganese, iron and chromium. Preferred MRL's herein are a special type of ultra-rigid ligand that is cross-bridged such as 5,12-diethyl-1,5,8,12-tetraazabicyclo[6.6.2]hexa-decane.
Suitable transition metal MRLs are readily prepared by known procedures, such as taught for example in WO 00/32601, and U.S. Pat. No. 6,225,464.
Suitable thickeners/structurants and useful levels of same are described in U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2005/0130864 A1 and U.S. Pat. Nos. 7,169,741 B2 and 7,297,674 B2.
The embodiments of consumer products of the present invention can be formulated into any suitable form and prepared by any process chosen by the formulator, non-limiting examples of which are described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,879,584; U.S. Pat. No. 5,691,297; U.S. Pat. No. 5,574,005; U.S. Pat. No. 5,569,645; U.S. Pat. No. 5,565,422; U.S. Pat. No. 5,516,448; U.S. Pat. No. 5,489,392; U.S. Pat. No. 5,486,303 all of which are incorporated herein by reference.
Compositions, such as consumer products, containing the benefit agent delivery composition disclosed herein can be used to clean or treat a situs inter alia a surface or fabric. Typically at least a portion of the situs is contacted with an embodiment of Applicants' composition, in neat form or diluted in a liquor, for example, a wash liquor and then the situs may be optionally washed and/or rinsed. In one aspect, a situs is optionally washed and/or rinsed, contacted with a particle according to the present invention or composition comprising said particle and then optionally washed and/or rinsed. For purposes of the present invention, washing includes but is not limited to, scrubbing, and mechanical agitation. The situs may comprise most any material, for example a fabric, fabric capable of being laundered or treated in normal consumer use conditions. Liquors that may comprise the disclosed compositions may have a pH of from about 3 to about 11.5. Such compositions are typically employed at concentrations of from about 500 ppm to about 15,000 ppm in solution. When the wash solvent is water, the water temperature typically ranges from about 5° C. to about 90° C. and, when the situs comprises a fabric, the water to fabric ratio is typically from about 1:1 to about 30:1.
In one aspect, packaging comprising the benefit agent delivery compositions is disclosed. Such packaging may be used to package a product such as a consumer product. The benefit delivery compositions of the present invention may be adhered or attached any where on such packaging. In one aspect, the packaging is used to package a product that comprises a benefit delivery composition of the present invention. Such packaging may have a composition according to the present invention adhered or attached any where on such packaging. Packing may take any form including wrapping, and/or a container. In one aspect, a benefit agent delivery composition disclosed herein may be adhered or attached to the exterior and/or the interior surface of such packaging. In one aspect, said packaging may comprise a container comprising a cap and said benefit agent delivery composition disclosed herein is adhered or attached to the exterior or interior surface of said cap.
In one aspect, a display comprising the benefit agent delivery compositions is disclosed. Such display may be used to attract attention to, market and/or assist in whole or in part the sale of a product such as a consumer product. The benefit delivery compositions of the present invention may be adhered or attached any where on such display. Such display may take any form including posters, sales and/or marketing literature, and/or a container. In one aspect, a benefit agent delivery composition disclosed herein is adhered or attached to the exterior and/or the interior surface of such display.

II. Wet Adhesion- a.) Prepare a presoaking solution by dissolving 17% of the manufacturer's recommended dose of Ariel liquid (available from The Procter & Gamble Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio) in two (2) liters of water. Save the remaining portion of the dose for use in Step d.) below.
- Before use the terries (product no ST01345 of 8790 Waregem Belgium) available from Maes Textile are prewashed 4 times before using, 2 times at 90° C., short cotton wash cycle with 75 g Ariel powder and 2 times at 90° C., short cotton wash cycle without product.
- b.) Before soaking weigh each terry then soak ten 10 cm×10 cm cotton terries (product no ST01354 available from Maes Textiles of 8790 Waregem Belgium) for five (5) minutes—after soaking for 5 minutes, squeeze, each terry by hand to remove as much of the absorbed soaking liquor.
- c.) Treat each soaked terry by applying 1 gram line of the benefit agent delivery composition to each terry using a spoon.
- d.) Wash the treated terries and 1 kg of unsoaked, untreated terries (product no ST01345) available from Maes Textiles of 8790 Waregem Belgium in a Miele washing machine (model W715) available from Miele of 1730 Mollem, Miele Belgium NV using the remaining portion of the dose of Ariel from Step a.) above and water having a hardness of 25 grains per gallon and the Short Cotton Wash Cycle at 40° C.
- e.) At the end of the wash cycle and after line drying in a conditioned room at 21° C. and 50% humidity, weigh each terry and calculate the percentage of benefit agent delivery composition remaining.
- f.) Average the ten measurements to obtain the average amount of benefit agent delivery composition remaining on the 10 terries and then apply the following scale to obtain the Wet Adhesion Index for the benefit agent delivery composition:
- Scale used from 0 to 4, 0=0% remaining, 1=greater than 0 but less than 10% remaining, 2=10% to less than 30% remaining, 3=30% to less than 50% remaining, 4=50% to 100% remaining.

- 2.9% of the epoxide Denacol® EX 622 (CAS# 68412-01-1) from Nagase
- 15.2% of Lupasol® WF (CAS# 09002-98-6) from BASF, (warmed a 60° C. water bath for 1 hour before weighing)
- 27.1% of Cyclohexyl isocyanate (CAS# 3173-53-3) from Bayer
The aforementioned ingredients are mixed using an Ultra-Turrax T25 Basic equipment (from IKA) during 5-10 minutes. When the mixing complete, the sample is put in a warm water bath at 60° C. for ±12 hours. A benefit agent delivery composition is obtained.
The procedure of Example 1 is followed accept the following ingredients are used:
- 50% of a perfume composition
- 9.4% hexyl Isocyanate (CAS# 2525-62-4) from Acros
- 18.7% of Lupasol® WF(CAS# 09002-98-6) from BASF (warmed a 60° C. water bath for 1 hour before weighing)
- 21.9% Octadecylisocanate (CAS# 112-96-9) from Bayer
A benefit agent delivery composition is obtained.
The procedure of Example 1 is followed accept the following ingredients are used:
- 40% of a perfume composition
- 1.5% hexyl Isocyanate (CAS# 2525-62-4) from Acros
- 30.2% of Lupasol® WF(CAS# 09002-98-6) from BASF (warmed a 60° C. water bath for 1 hour before weighing)
- 28.3% of Cyclohexyl isocyanate (CAS# 3173-53-3) from Bayer
A benefit agent delivery composition is obtained.

- 40% of carboxyl-terminated Hycar® 1300×42 (CAS# proprietary) from Noveon, (warmed a 60° C. water bath for 1 hour before weighing)
- 10% of Lupasol® WF (CAS# 09002-98-6) from BASF, (warmed a 60° C. water bath for 1 hour before weighing)
A benefit agent delivery composition is obtained.
A polymer mixture of 3 parts Lupasol® WF (CAS# 09002-98-6) from BASF, and 7 parts carboxyl-terminated Hycar® 1300×18 Special (CAS#0068891-50-9) is made. The mixture is combined, in a ratio of 1.7:8.3 parts polymer mixture to Benzyl Benzoate to make a solution. The ingredients are combined in a glass jar, and mixed by heating to 80° C. on a hot plate while being stirred using a magnetic stirrer.
Next, the resulting polymer premix/Benzyl Benzoate is mixed with a perfume composition in a 1:1 ratio. The resulting mix is than added to a Fabric Enhancer matrix.
Any of the benefit agent delivery compositions obtained via Examples 1-12 above or any mixture thereof is heated to 60° for about 2 hours before starting the agglomeration. Then the selected benefit agent delivery composition is combined with melted Lutensol® AT 80 powder in a ratio of 4 parts benefit agent delivery composition to 6 parts melted Lutensol® AT 80 powder by weight. The aforementioned ingredients are mixed using a Ultra-Turrax T25 Basic equipment (from IKA) for 5 to 10 minutes to form a mixture.
Next, the aforementioned mixture is mixed in a ratio of 4 parts mixture to 6 parts soda ash light using a Braun kitchen food processor to form an agglomerate that is added to a powder detergents matrix.
Any of the benefit agent delivery compositions obtained via Examples 1-12 above is heated to 60° for about 2 hours before starting the agglomeration.

The any of such benefit agent delivery compositions is mixed for about 5 minutes, using an Ultra-Turrax T25 Basic equipment (from IKA), with benzyl benzoate in the ratios given above to form a mixture. The resulting mixture is then added to a liquid detergent matrix.
The materials below are added separately, in any order, to a liquid cleaning and/or treatment composition matrix to form a cleaning and/or treatment composition.
