Abstract

Freestanding particles comprising a plurality of segments, wherein the particle length is from 10 nm to 50 μm and the particle width is form 5 nm to 50 μm.

Description

Claims (38)

We claim:
1. An assembly of particles comprising a plurality of types of particles, wherein each particle is from 10 nm to 50 μm in length and is comprised of a plurality of segments, and wherein at least one of said types is differentiable from another of said types based on the sequence of said segments.
2. The assembly of particles ofclaim 1 wherein at least one of said types is differentiable from another of said types by optical means, electrical means, physical means, chemical means or magnetic means.
3. The assembly of particles ofclaim 2 wherein at least one of said types is differentiable from another of said types by optical means.
4. The assembly of particles ofclaim 3 wherein at least one of said types is differentiable from another of said types by differential reflectivity.
5. The assembly of particles ofclaim 1 wherein each said particle comprises 2 to 50 segments, and wherein the length of each particle is from 1 to 15 μm, the width of each particle is from 30 nm to 2 μm, and the segment lengths are from 50 nm to 10 μm.
6. The assembly of particles ofclaim 1 comprising functionalized particles.
7. The assembly of particles ofclaim 6 comprising at least one type that is differently functionalized from another type.
8. The assembly of particles ofclaim 6 wherein said functionalization comprises an organic substance, an inorganic substance, an inorganic coordination complex and/or an organometallic complex.
9. The assembly of particles ofclaim 6 wherein said functionalization comprises a detectable tag or a material which will bind a detectable tag.
10. The assembly of particles ofclaim 9 wherein said detectable tag is selected from the group consisting of: a fluorescent tag, an isotopic tag, a radioactive tag, a particulate tag, an oligonucleotide-based tag, a molecular tag, a Raman-based tag, an infrared tag, a mass spectrometric tag, and an electrochemical tag.
11. An assembly of rod-shaped particles comprising a plurality of types of particles, wherein each particle has at least one dimension greater than about 10 nm and less than 10 μm, and wherein at least one of said types is differentiable from another of said types and is made by a process having different synthesis parameters from those of another of said types.
12. The assembly of particles ofclaim 11 wherein each particle has at least one dimension less than 500 nm.
13. The assembly of particle ofclaim 11 wherein each particle has at least one dimension less than 200 nm.
14. The assembly of particles ofclaim 11 comprising at least 3 types of particles.
15. The assembly of particles ofclaim 11 comprising at least 5 types of particles.
16. The assembly of particles ofclaim 11 wherein at least one of said types is differentiable from another of said types based on differences in particle length, width, and/or composition.
17. The assembly of particles ofclaim 11 comprising functionalized particles.
18. The assembly of particles ofclaim 17 comprising at least one type that is differently functionalized from another type.
19. The assembly of particles ofclaim 17 wherein said functionalization comprises an organic substance, an inorganic substance, an inorganic coordination complex and/or an organometallic complex.
20. The assembly of particles ofclaim 17 wherein said functionalization comprises a detectable tag or a material which will bind a detectable tag.
21. An assembly of particles comprising a plurality of each of a plurality of types of encoded particles, wherein each particle is from 10 nm to 50 μm in length and is comprised of a plurality of segments, and wherein at least one of said types is differentiable from another of said types based on said encoding.
22. The assembly of particles ofclaim 21 wherein said types are differentiable by at least one of optical means, electrical means, physical means, chemical means and magnetic means.
23. The assembly of particles ofclaim 22 wherein said types are differentiable by differential reflectivity.
24. The assembly of particles ofclaim 21 wherein each particle comprises 2 to 50 segments, and wherein the length of each particle is from 1 to 15 μm, the width of each particle is from 30 nm to 2 μm, and the segment lengths are from 50 nm to 10 μm.
25. The assembly of particles ofclaim 21 comprising functionalized particles.
26. The assembly of particles ofclaim 25 comprising types of particles differently functionalized from other types of particles.
27. The assembly of particles ofclaim 25 wherein said functionalization comprises at least one of an organic substance, an inorganic substance, an inorganic coordination complex, and an organometallic complex.
28. The assembly of particles ofclaim 25 wherein said functionalization comprises at least one of a detectable tag and a material that can bind a detectable tag.
29. The assembly of particles ofclaim 28 wherein said detectable tag comprises at least one of a fluorescent tag, an isotopic tag, a radioactive tag, a particulate tag, an oligonucleotide-based tag, a molecular tag, a Raman-based tag, an infrared tag, a mass spectrometric tag, and an electrochemical tag.
30. An assembly of particles comprising a plurality of types of particles, wherein each particle is from 10 nm to 50 μm in length and has a striping pattern, wherein said striping pattern is produced as a function of the sequence, composition, and length of segments of said particle, and wherein at least one of said types is differentiable from another of said types based on said striping pattern.
31. The assembly of particles ofclaim 30 wherein said types are differentiable by at least one of optical means, electrical means, physical means, chemical means and magnetic means.
32. The assembly of particles ofclaim 31 wherein said types are differentiable by differential reflectivity.
33. The assembly of particles ofclaim 30 wherein each particle comprises 2 to 50 segments, and wherein the length of each particle is from 1 to 15 μm, the width of each particle is from 30 nm to 2 μm, and the segment lengths are from 50 nm to 10 μm.
34. The assembly of particles ofclaim 30 comprising functionalized particles.
35. The assembly of particles ofclaim 34 comprising types of particles differently functionalized from other types of particles.
36. The assembly of particles ofclaim 34 wherein said functionalization comprises at least one of an organic substance, an inorganic substance, an inorganic coordination complex, and an organometallic complex.
37. The assembly of particles ofclaim 34 wherein said functionalization comprises at least one of a detectable tag and a material that can bind a detectable tag.
38. The assembly of particles ofclaim 37 wherein said detectable tag comprises at least one of a fluorescent tag, an isotopic tag, a radioactive tag, a particulate tag, an oligonucleotide-based tag, a molecular tag, a Raman-based tag, an infrared tag, a mass spectrometric tag, and an electrochemical tag.
