Abstract

A medical device, such as a catheter shaft, having an inner lumen defined by a layer of polymer coating, and a method for forming such a medical device. In some embodiments, the method generally includes the steps of applying a polymer coating to an elongated mandrel, and constructing the remainder of the catheter shaft body around the polymer coated mandrel. In some embodiments, the polymer coating layer is made from water dispersible polymer or water soluble polymer.

Description

Claims (24)

What is claimed is:
1. A method for forming a medical device comprising:
applying a polymer coating layer to an elongated mandrel, wherein the polymer coating layer comprises a polymer that is water soluble or water dispersible prior to curing, and is not water soluble after curing;
disposing at least one additional layer around a portion of the polymer coating layer; and
removing the elongated mandrel to expose an inner lumen at least partially defined by the polymer coating.
2. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the polymer coating layer comprises a polymer that is a water dispersible polymer prior to curing.
3. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the polymer coating layer comprises a polymer that is a water soluble polymer.
4. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the polymer coating layer comprises a water dispersible polymer comprising, polyvinyl alcohol, styrene-butadiene, acrylate, acrylic polymers, polyester, polyester urethanes, polyacrylamide, or mixtures thereof.
5. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the polymer coating comprises a water soluble polymer comprising polyvinyl alcohol, polyethyleneoxide, polyethyleneglycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, carboxymethylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, or mixtures thereof.
6. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the polymer coating comprises polytetrafluroethylene, polytetrafluoroehylene, polyacrylic acid, or mixtures thereof.
7. The method ofclaim 1, wherein after the applying step, the polymer coating layer is cured.
8. The method ofclaim 1, wherein after the applying step, the polymer coating layer is heat treated.
9. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the polymer coating layer is applied to the elongated mandrel through dip coating.
10. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the polymer coating layer is applied to the elongated mandrel through extrusion.
11. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the polymer coating layer has a thickness in the range of about 0.0005 and about 0.005 of an inch.
12. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the polymer coating layer has a thickness in the range of about 0.001 and about 0.003 of an inch.
13. The method ofclaim 1, wherein the at least one additional layer includes a reinforcing layer.
14. The method ofclaim 13, a wherein the reinforcing layer comprises one or more elongated filaments.
15. The method ofclaim 13, wherein the reinforcing layer includes a braid.
16. The method ofclaim 13, wherein the reinforcing layer includes a coil.
17. A method for forming a catheter shaft comprising:
forming an inner member from water soluble or water dispersible polymer, the inner member having an inner lumen;
curing the water soluble or water dispersible polymer such that it is not water soluble;
disposing at least one additional member around the inner member.
18. The method ofclaim 17, wherein the polymer is a water soluble polymer prior to curing.
19. A method for forming a catheter shaft having a polymer coated inner lumen, the method comprising:
applying a polymer coating to an elongated mandrel;
disposing a reinforcement material around the mandrel and onto the polymer coating;
disposing at least one outer member over the reinforcement material and polymer coating; and
removing the mandrel from the polymer material to expose the polymer coated inner lumen.
20. A catheter shaft including an inner layer comprising a polymer that is water soluble prior to curing, and not water soluble after curing, the inner layer defining an inner lumen.
