Abstract

A system and method for the reception of content items, including the ability to handle a plurality of service announcement formats and the ability to select, for a plurality of network access points, the best access point for receiving items.

Description

Claims (34)

What is claimed is:
1. A method for receiving content items, comprising:
storing success properties;
receiving an ideality equation, said equation involving said success properties; and
using said equation to compute the ideality of employing a particular network access point to receive a particular content item.
2. The method ofclaim 1, wherein said success properties are received.
3. The method ofclaim 2, wherein said success properties are received from a network administrator.
4. The method ofclaim 1, wherein said success properties are derived from historical experience.
5. The method ofclaim 1, wherein one of said success properties is content item type.
6. The method ofclaim 1, wherein one of said success properties is signal-to-noise ratio.
7. The method ofclaim 1, wherein one of said success properties is capacity.
8. The method ofclaim 1, wherein one of said success properties is quality of service.
9. The method ofclaim 1, wherein one of said success properties is cost.
10. A method for processing service announcements, comprising:
receiving service announcements, each of said service announcements being in at least one of a plurality of formats;
extracting service properties from said service announcements; and
storing said service properties in a single predetermined format.
11. The method ofclaim 10, further comprising:
choosing an appropriate graphical user interface; and
using said graphical interface to present to a user information relating to said service properties.
12. The method ofclaim 10, further comprising:
choosing an appropriate voice interface; and
using said voice interface to present to a user information relating to said service properties.
13. The method ofclaim 10 wherein said plurality of formats includes digital video broadcast service information format.
14. The method ofclaim 10 wherein said plurality of formats includes session initiation protocol format.
15. The method ofclaim 10 wherein said single predetermined format is extensible markup language.
16. The method ofclaim 10 wherein the stored service properties are accessible by an external application.
17. A system for receiving content items, comprising:
a memory having program code stored therein; and
a processor operatively connected to said memory for carrying out instructions in accordance with said stored program code;
wherein said program code, when executed by said processor, causes said processor to perform the steps of:
storing success properties;
receiving an ideality equation, said equation involving said success properties; and
using said equation to compute the ideality of employing a particular network access point to receive a particular content item.
18. The system ofclaim 17, wherein said success properties are received.
19. The system ofclaim 17, wherein said success properties are received from a network administrator.
20. The system ofclaim 17, wherein said success properties are derived from historical experience.
21. The system ofclaim 17, wherein one of said success properties is content item type.
