Abstract

A connector (10) used in packaging together two aerosol containers (A1, A2) for sale as a unit. A first connector segment (12) attaches to one aerosol container (A1), and a second connector segment (14) attaches to the other aerosol containers (A2). The connector segments grasp adjacent portions of the respective aerosol containers which, in one embodiment are stacked vertically, one above the other, and in other embodiments horizontally in a side-by-side configuration. In two of the embodiments, the connector is formed as a one piece, integral connector. In a third embodiment, the connector segments are separate pieces (12C and14C) with one piece (12C) attaching to the top, cap portion of the containers, and the other piece (14C) attaching to the base of the respective containers. In each embodiment the containers are handled as a single unit regardless of whether one container or the other, or the connector, is used to move the containers.

Description

Claims (30)

I claim:
1. A connector for use in packaging at least two aerosol containers together for sale of the containers as a unit, comprising:
a first connector segment which attaches to a first of the aerosol containers; and,
a second connector segment which attaches to a second of the aerosol containers, the two connector segments grasping adjacent portions of the respective aerosol containers when the containers are either stacked vertically, one above the other, or horizontally in a side-by-side configuration, so the containers are handled as a single unit regardless of whether one container or the other, or the connector, is used to move the containers.
2. The connector ofclaim 1 which is formed as a one piece, integral connector.
3. The connector ofclaim 2 further including means joining the two connector segments together to form a unitary connector.
4. The connector ofclaim 3 wherein the aerosol containers are stacked in a vertical configuration with the first segment of the connector attaching to the upper aerosol container of the stack, and the second segment attaching to the lower aerosol container in the stack.
5. The connector ofclaim 4 wherein each aerosol container has a generally cylindrical center section, a top section attached to an upper end of the center section and a countersink attached to a lower end thereof, the first connector segment attaching to a seam formed at the lower end of the upper aerosol container in the stack, the seam being formed where the countersink attaches to the lower end of the center section.
6. The connector ofclaim 5 wherein the second connector segment attaches to a seam formed at the upper end of the lower aerosol container in the stack, the seam being formed where the top section of the container attaches to the upper end of the center section thereof.
7. The connector ofclaim 6 wherein a fluid dispensing valve is fitted into the top section of each aerosol container and the second container segment includes an annular skirt sized to fit over the valve when the second container segment is set in place.
8. The connector ofclaim 7 wherein each container segment is cup shaped with the upper connector segment having a base forming a common wall with a top wall of the second connector segment.
9. The connector ofclaim 8 having an annular sidewall comprising the sidewall of both connector segments, the outer end of each connector segment being an open end so to fit about the respective aerosol containers.
10. The connector ofclaim 9 wherein the upper and lower ends of the sidewall curve inwardly so to fit about the respective seams in the aerosol containers to attach the connector to the containers.
11. The connector ofclaim 10 wherein the height of the first connector segment is shorter than the height of the second connector segment.
12. The connector ofclaim 8 wherein the skirt descends from the top wall of the second connector segment.
13. The connector ofclaim 11 further including a second connector for use in connecting together three aerosol containers in a vertical stack.
14. The connector ofclaim 2 wherein the aerosol connectors are arranged side-by-side, each aerosol container having a generally cylindrical main body section, a top section into which a fluid dispensing valve is fitted, and a cap fitting over the top section, the first connector segment fitting about one of the aerosol containers and the second connector segment fitting about the other aerosol container.
15. The connector ofclaim 14 wherein each connector segment is generally U-shaped, when viewed in plan, with a common wall formed between the connector segments whereby the connector segments are opposed to each other.
16. The connector ofclaim 15 wherein the length of the arms of each connector segment extend past a longitudinal axis of the respective aerosol container to which it is attached.
17. The connector ofclaim 16 wherein the outer ends of each arm of each connector segment are inwardly turned so to fit about a sidewall of the main body section of the aerosol container to which the segment attaches.
18. The connector ofclaim 17 wherein further including the arms of each connector segment are straight.
19. The connector ofclaim 18 wherein an inner wall surface of each arm of each connector segment is curved, the curvature generally corresponding to the curvature of the sidewall of the main body section of the aerosol container.
20. The connector ofclaim 1 wherein the aerosol connectors are arranged side-by-side, each aerosol container having a generally cylindrical main body section, a top section into which a fluid dispensing valve is fitted, and a cap fitting over the top section, the first connector segment fitting over the caps of the aerosol containers and the second connector segment fitting about a base of each of the main body sections of the aerosol containers.
21. The connector ofclaim 20 wherein the first connector segment has a circumferential sidewall which extends a distance down the sides of the respective aerosol container caps.
22. The connector ofclaim 21 wherein the second connector segment has a circumferential sidewall which extends a distance above the base of each of the main body sections of the aerosol containers.
23. The connector ofclaim 22 wherein each of the connector segments has an elongated oval shape when viewed in plan.
24. The connector ofclaim 23 wherein the width of each connector segment generally corresponds to the diameter of the respective aerosol containers, with the ends of each segment having a curvature whose radius corresponds to the radius of the aerosol containers.
25. The connector ofclaim 20 further including a common wall formed intermediate the length of each connector segment, the common wall dividing each connector segment into separate compartments for each of the aerosol containers packaged using the connector.
26. The connector ofclaim 25 wherein the first connector segment further includes a pair of skirts depending from a top wall of the first connector segment, one of the skirts being centrally formed in each compartment.
27. The connector ofclaim 25 further including spaced projections formed about an inner face of a sidewall of the second connector segment.
28. The connector ofclaim 27 wherein the projections are formed slightly above a base wall of the second connector segment, the projections helping secure the second connector segment to the base of an aerosol container.
29. The connector ofclaim 20 sized to accommodate at least three aerosol containers arranged side-by-side in a line.
30. The connector ofclaim 29 further including a plurality of interior walls formed intermediate the length of each connector segment, the interior walls dividing each connector segment into separate compartments for each of the aerosol containers packaged using the connector.
