Abstract

A filtration cartridge faucet assembly contains a filtration cartridge having a filter core that is concealed beneath a sink deck through the use of an escutcheon mount. The escutcheon mount permits access to a renewable filtration cartridge from above the sink deck while concealing and protecting the filtration body. The renewable filtration cartridge is equipped with a flow control device, as well as counter rotation devices that prevent undesirable outrotation of a threaded cap.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
• 1. Field of the Invention[0002]
• The present invention pertains to the field of water filtration or purification devices and, particularly, mounting assemblies that are used to mount renewable or replaceable filters in proximity to a sink. More specifically, the mounting assemblies are adapted to mount filters in locations that facilitate unhindered use of the sink area, yet the filters can be easily renewed or replaced from above the countertop at the end of their useful life.[0003]
• 2. Statement of the Problem[0004]
• Most water faucets of the type that supply water to a sink do not include a water filtration or purification device. These faucets typically contain a central valve connected to a cold water supply and a hot water supply. The valve is capable of selective actuation to provide hot, cold or warm water for use at the sink. The faucet assemblies typically use screens having relatively large openings to remove correspondingly large particles from the incoming water supply, but no attempt is made to filter small particles or purify the water by chemical means.[0005]
• Water consumers are increasingly aware that public water supplies are contaminated with many undesirable chemicals and microorganisms which are capable of impairing the health of persons who consume the water. For example, water supplies in rural agricultural areas often contain nitrates and pesticides, which are used to treat crops. Most municipalities add chlorine to guard against pathogens in the public water supply. There is much discussion among experts over what concentrations of chlorine, nitrates, and pesticides are considered to be safe. Generally, it is acknowledged that the water supply would be better without these chemicals. Similarly, water may contain pathogenic microorganisms, such as rotavirus, Giardia and Cryptosporidium, which may be removed by filtration and chemical treatment.[0006]
• Water filtration and purification devices may be purchased and installed for use in combination with sink-mounted water faucets. Paper filters or activated carbon blocks are commonly used as the filtration material. A common technique is to place the water filter in a self-contained housing with an inlet and outlet connected to the cold water supply leading to the faucet. The assembled in-line unit is placed in a compartment beneath the sink where it operates to filter water until the end of its useful life. The filtration element is renewed or replaced by unscrewing a cap from the assembly and withdrawing the filtration element for renewal or replacement.[0007]
• The filter renewal or replacement procedure is a source of many troubles. The person who performs this procedure must partially crawl into the compartment beneath the sink to renew the cartridge. Other items in the compartment, e.g., paper items, granulated soaps, and tools, must be removed to protect them from spillage as the filter is changed. Leaks may be caused in valves and plumbing connections as a consequence of moving the filter. Over time, the compartment sustains noticeable water damage due to repeated spillage and leaks.[0008]
• Where in-line systems are not used, the alternative procedure is to place a filter on the countertop or on the faucet discharge. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 5,017,286 shows a faucet-mounted water filter that is secured to the open end of a water faucet. A manually actuatable diverter valve is used to divert water from the main discharge to the filter. Similarly, U.S. Pat. No. 5,656,160 shows a water filter that is mounted on the countertop adjacent the sink. The filter inlet is coupled with the sink faucet through a swivel mounted elbow that is capable of 360 degree rotation. The problem with filters mounted above the counter is that they occupy space in areas of high activity. Faucet mounted filters of the type shown in the '286 patent are subject to damage from items that are being cleaned in the sink, e.g., pans, dishes or turkeys, and the filter may even have to be removed to provide access for large items. Countertop models similarly interfere with desirable access to the sink area.[0009]
• There remains a need for a filter mounting assembly that permits mounting of a filter proximate a sink without occupying space in the work area adjacent the sink and without the inconvenience of a below sink mount.[0010]
Solution
• The present invention overcomes the problems that are outlined above and advances the art by providing a filtration cartridge mounting assembly that permits mounting of a filter proximate a sink without occupying space in the work area adjacent the sink. Substantially all of the filter is stored beneath the countertop, but the filter is accessed for renewal or replacement from a vantage point above the countertop work surface. Even though the filter is concealed beneath the countertop, there is advantageously no need for one to crawl into the compartment beneath the sink for renewal or replacement of the cartridge.[0011]
• A water filtration cartridge assembly according to the invention includes a filtration body for use in the filtration of water. An escutcheon or flange is adapted to mount the filtration body into sink deck openings. The filtration body passes through the escutcheon and the sink deck opening to conceal a substantial portion of the filtration body beneath the countertop. A detachable channel-lock, compression fitting, or threadable coupling is used to connect the filtration body with the escutcheon to provide a sealed assembly without leakage of water when the filtration body is used for filtration of water. The coupling mechanism also permits renewal or replacement of the filtration body from an access position above the countertop when the filtration body is not used for filtration of water.[0012]
• As used in this art, there is sometimes ambiguity as to whether a filter includes only a mechanical filter. Chemical scrubbers, such as activated carbon blocks, are also sometimes referred to as filters. Similarly, beds of chemical treating or purification agents also act as mechanical filters. In an effort to resolve this ambiguity, the term “filter” is hereby defined to include mechanical filters, beds of chemical scrubbers, beds of chemical treating agents, beds of chemical purification agents, fluidized beds of particulate treating agents, and any other bed of material that even temporarily has the effect of a mechanical or electrostatic filter.[0013]
• In preferred embodiments, the filtration body includes a filter core received within an outer sleeve. The outer sleeve has an upper opening of sufficient dimensions to permit passage of the filter core through the upper opening. Thus, the outer sleeve is a permanent part of the mounting assembly, and only the filter core need be replaced at times of cartridge renewal or replacement. Less preferred embodiments require replacement of the entire cartridge including the outer sleeve and, consequently, are more wasteful. The filter core preferably has a cylindrical shape including a central axial bed of at least one chemical purification agent surrounded by a radial mechanical filter.[0014]
• In other preferred embodiments, the escutcheon is specially formed through a water faucet housing. Thus, the filtration body is mounted through the second or third hole in a sink beneath the housing where the first hole is a conventional central hole beneath the faucet valve assembly.[0015]
• The escutcheon may also be a specially made flange adapted to retain the filtration body within a soap hole in a sink, i.e., what is conventionally referred to as the fourth hole.[0016]
• A five way valve is formed of two ceramic plates for purposes of flowing water to the filter assembly. This valve is specially constructed to flow only cold water to the filter. An especially preferred feature of this valve is the filtered water position being an extension of the cold water positional domain as the handle attached to the valve is rotated towards the cold water position. A spring detent assembly is strategically placed on a ramp to provide an indication that a handle for the valve has rotated into a filtered water domain, and to assure that the valve initially jumps to a position where it flows at full capacity once the detent resistance is overcome.[0017]

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
• FIG. 1 depicts a front, right, top elevational perspective view of a first embodiment of the invention, namely, filtration[0059]cartridge faucet assembly100. Filtrationcartridge faucet assembly100 includes awater faucet assembly102 and afiltration body104. The major components ofwater faucet assembly102 include anovaloid faucet housing106, avalve body108 which is integrally formed withspout110, and ahandle112.Valve body108 is capable of rotation on a vertically oriented axis, with therotation shifting spout110 to selected positions on the right or left, e.g., as to dispense water in different sides of a sink (not depicted in FIG. 1). Anescutcheon114 adaptsfiltration body104 for coupling withfaucet housing106.

A central, upwardly raised, flat slidingsurface530 is coated with a hydrophobic silicon-based grease to facilitate a watertight seal.

Recess700 functions as a via that permits the passage of cold water for filtration. The taperedsection702 is configured to overliecold water opening600 in bottom plate520 (see FIG. 6) while therounded section704 overlies opening608 for the discharge of filtration water. Thus, a temporary flow passage is formed for filtration water by the position oftop plate500 relative tobottom plate520.
• A second irregularly shaped[0074]recess706 is configured to make it impossible forrecess706 to flow water throughopening606 at the same time thatrecess702 is positioned to permit flow of filtration water through opening608 (see FIG. 6). Adogleg feature708 and apoint710 are adapted to overlieopenings602 and604 while aremote end712 overliesopening606. In this manner, thedogleg feature708 overlies opening602 andpoint706 overlies opening604 while theremote end712 overlies opening606 to permit selective flow of hot, cold or mixed warm water throughopening606.
• FIG. 8 depicts a bottom plan view of the assembled five[0075]way valve400.Housing402 includes abottom wall800 having a plurality of openings formed therein to permit passage of water. Acold water opening802 is in communication with cold water supply line310 (see FIG. 3),opening600 andopening602. Ahot water opening804 is in communication with hot water supply line312 (see FIG. 3) andopening604. A filtrationwater discharge opening806 is in communication with filtration water supply line304 (see FIG. 3) andopening608. A mixedwater discharge opening808 is in communication with main discharge orifice308 (see FIG. 3) andopening606. A plurality of elastomeric bands having a rectangular crossection function asseals810,812,814, and816, which prevent water leakage under the tensile strain exerted bybolts818,820 and822 to compresshousing420 into end plate316 (see FIG. 3). A plurality offrustoconical recesses824,826,828, and830 are formed inbottom plate520 to convey water to the respective openings600-608. • The foregoing discussion demonstrates that five[0076]way valve400 is selectively positioned by actuation ofhandle112 to provide these five flow configurations:
• (1) Flow of cold water from opening[0077]600 to opening608 for filtration;
• (2) Flow of cold water from opening[0078]602 to opening606 for discharge of unfiltered cold water;
• (3) Flow of hot water from opening[0079]604 to opening606 for discharge of unfiltered hot water;
• (4) Simultaneous flow of cold water from opening[0080]602 and hot water from opening604 to opening606 for discharge of unfiltered mixed or warm temperature water; and
• (5) No flow with[0081]top plate500 ofvalve400 positioned to block flow, i.e., in an off position.
• FIG. 9 depicts additional detail with respect to a cylindrical filter core[0082]120 (see FIG. 1). End oflife indicator122 functions as a twist handle for axial rotation offilter core120. In a vertically descending sequence, the exterior portion of end oflife indicator122 includes a firstcylindrical lip902 above an O-ring-retainingchannel904. A pair of diametrically opposed protrusions, e.g.,protrusion906, are formed above the firstcylindrical lip902. The protrusions have sufficient dimensions to fit within recessedslots228 and230 for corresponding interengagement with and retention offilter core122 within escutcheon114 (see FIG. 2). This interengagement also retains thefilter core120 within the filtration body104 (see FIG. 1). A secondcylindrical lip908 contains a plurality of perforations, e.g.,perforations910 and912, leading to the interior of end oflife indicator122. A second O-ring channel914 exists beneath secondcylindrical lip908. A thirdcylindrical lip916 has a greater diameter than doestube918, which is ultrasonically welded or adhered to end oflife indicator122.
• [0083]Tube918 has animpermeable wall920 connecting thirdcylindrical lip916 with a lower flaredshoulder922.Shoulder922 has a sufficient internal diameter to receive a tubularmechanical filter924.Mechanical filter924 is adhered toshoulder922, and can be a paper or cardboard filter to strain sediments, or it can be a microfilter that removes pathogenic bacterial or even viruses from the water. In low-sediment environments of use, a particle filter capable of removing 0.22 micron particles will remove substantially all pathogenic bacterial contaminants, but this size of filter clogs quickly in moderately sedimented environments. A one micron filter removes substantially all protozoa and does not clog as easily as the 0.22 micron filter. A five micron filter removes only sediments, and does not protect against protozoa. The filter is selectively sized for the intended environment of use.
• A[0084]plastic plug926 is adhered to the bottom portion ofmechanical filter924 to prevent water from bypassing the filter. Aleaf spring928 places a compressive force onmechanical filter924 andtube918 to enhance the interengagement betweenprotrusion906 its corresponding recessedslot228.

The water changes flow direction ninety degrees to flow in a radially inboard direction throughmechanical filter924 and intointerior plenum1012, which exists betweenmechanical filter924 and an impermeableinner sleeve1014. The flow again changes direction ninety degrees to flow axially downward toperforations1016 and1018, which transfer the water interior toinner sleeve1014.End cap926 is adhered to the inner circumference ofinner sleeve1014 andmechanical filter924 to prevent water from bypassing thefilter924.
• With the conversion from radial flow to axial flow now complete, a first stacked[0087]axial bed1020 is the first bed in a series of stacked axialbeds including beds1020,1022, and1024. These beds include a plurality of sequential beds comprising chemical scrubbing and purification agents. For example,bed1020 can be a bed of KDF™ material, which functions as an extremely good chlorine scrubber and also demonstrates antimicrobial activity. The KDF™ material is a commercially available product produced by KDF Company of Constantine Mich. The KDF™ material is a proprietary mixture of zinc and copper that is heated and flaked into tiny pieces. The material permits an exchange of ions due to an oxidation reduction process. The KDF material also has bactericidal effects, as described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,415,770. Alternatively,bed1020 can be a bacteriostatic carbon, such as a silver impregnated carbon.Bed1022 can be activated carbon to remove pesticides and other undesirable chemicals.Bed1024 can include a flavor enhancer, such as calcium carbonate. Alternatively, bed720 can contain an antimicrobial agent, e.g., an iodinated ion exchange resin, while bed722 is activated carbon to scrub the iodine from the water. Any one of these beds can be compressed with fill or packed with particulates to an approximate 80% fill volume to provide a fluidized bed of the treating agent. The respective beds are separated byperforated disks1025 and1028. The flow of water proceeds axially upward through beds1020-1024 and intoregion1032 for entry into the end oflife indicator122. In turn, end oflife indicator122 discharges the water through theperforations910, throughorifice224, and into filtered water line302 (see FIG. 3).
• A preferred feature of the invention is to incorporate antibacterial agents, such as the aforementioned KDF™ material, into the[0088]mechanical filter924 and the stacked axial beds1020-1024. These materials, as well as other known antimicrobial agents, exhibit antimicrobial activity that prevents bacteria from growing through themechanical filter924. The use of antimicrobial agents can substantially prolong filter life wherefilter924 is a microfilter. Where the antimicrobial agent places undesirable bactericides into the water, as in the case of iodinated ion exchanged resins, an activated carbon bed may be used to scrub the bactericide from the filtered water.
• End of[0089]life indicator122 includes aliquid crystal display1026 that provides an alphanumeric readout and is activated by push-button1032. The end oflife indicator122 is battery powered, and push-button1032 is provided to conserve battery power by activating the display only when readout is necessary. The readout identifies how many gallons of water have passed throughfiltration body104 and percentagewise how much of the useful cartridge life is left infiltration core120.
• As to alternative embodiments, those skilled in the art will appreciate that a conventional threaded nipple can be installed in[0090]end plate118 to receive water from filtrationwater supply line304, as opposed to receiving water fromperforations910 and912. Furthermore, the end of life indicator can be replaced by a screw-on cap or other device for locking and sealing the upper\end of the cartridge in an operational manner.
• FIG. 11 depicts a schematic circuit diagram in combination with a generalized midsectional view of a paddle[0091]wheel flowmeter assembly1100 installed infilter core120 for use in combination with end oflife indicator122. • FIG. 12 depicts the filtration[0092]cartridge faucet assembly100 mounted on asink deck1200, which has a conventionalfourth hole opening1202 for use with aconventional vegetable sprayer1204. The installation places substantially all offiltration body104 beneath the workingsurface1206 ofcounter1208. • FIG. 25 depicts a top plan view of the assembled[0110]valve1500. Rotational movement ofcam lever1508 is limited by the abutment ofwing1538 againstbosses1532 and1534. Whencam lever1508 is rocked fully forward as shown in FIG. 24, it is possible for the bottom surface ofwing1538 to ride aboveramp2500 torotational position2502 for the flow of filtered water with filtration water via1610 bridging distance1904 (see also FIGS. 16 and 19). Clockwise rotation ofcam lever1508 along a 20°arc2504 diminishes the flow of filtered water towardsposition2506. • [0111]Arc2508 represents a positional flow domain for flowing cold, hot, and mixed unfiltered water. The flow of unfiltered water is pure cold water whencam lever1508 is fully rearward atposition2506 and is mixed water ascam lever1508 is rotated clockwise fromposition2506 along 80°arc2508 towardsposition2510. The flow of water atposition2510 is pure hot water. This arrangement provides safety by assuring that the flow of filtered water corners only from a position ofcam lever1508 that is rocked fully forward and rotated far to the right. The filter is protected from exposure to hot water because it is impossible to flow hot water to the filter. The volumetric rate of water flow is adjusted by rockingwing1540 down to decrease the rate of water flow and by rockingwing1540 up to increase water flow.Arc2504 represents a positional domain for the flow of filtered cold water alone, and is merely an extension of thecold water point2506 ofmixed water arc2508. However, the volumetric rate of flow onarc2504 is not adjusted by rockingwing1540 up and down because this rocking motion is limited by the contact betweenwing1538 andramp2500. The volumetric rate of water flow onarc2504 is adjusted by the rotational position ofwing1538 relative to ramp2500.
• A compression[0112]spring detent assembly2512 atopramp2500 engageswing1538 alongarc2504 to provide an initial resistance or bump ofwing1538 is rotated intoramp2500. This initial resistance is overcome as the spring detent assembly is compressed with the result of havingwing1538 fully rotated to a flowing position. This assures that filtered water is flowing to its full design capacity. Users may subsequently reduce the flow rate by rotatingwing1540 towardsposition2506 depending upon use-specific volumetric demands in the intended environment of use.
• FIG. 26 depicts a[0113]manifold assembly2600 that is used to dispense water fromvalve1500. An externally threaded tube2602 is used to anchor the assembly in a sink deck (not depicted in FIG. 26). Acylindrical exterior housing2604 contains fixedmanifold components2606 and aslot2608 permitting the passage of an flexiblefiltered water spout2610. Manifold components are affixed to tube2602, whileexterior housing2604 is free to rotate in axially centered motion relative tomanifold components2606.

• FIG. 28 is a midsectional view providing additional detail with respect to the assembled[0117]manifold assembly2600. Anexternal faucet spout2800 circumscribes filteredwater spout2610 and is affixed toexterior housing2604 to provideannular passage2802 communicating with aconventional aerator outlet2804, which is used to dispense unfiltered water. Flexiblefiltered water spout2610 discharges through aseparate discharge opening2806 that is threadably coupled with anelbow2808, which is coupled with filteredwater spout2610. An O-ring2810seals elbow2808 againstexternal faucet spout2800 to blockpassage2802. A conventionaldiverter valve assembly2812 is operably configured to receive mixed water from hole2710 (see FIG. 27) and to divert this water to eitherannular passage2802 or to a vegetable sprayer (not depicted in FIG. 28) depending upon the selective actuation of the vegetable sprayer in a conventional manner of operation for diverter valves of this type known to those skilled in the art.
• The[0118]discharge opening2806 is configured to discharge a downward stream of water at an angle β relative to the discharge axis ofoutlet2804. This angle β throws the filtered water forward a sufficient distance to prevent the commingling of filtered water fromdischarge opening2806 and unfiltered water fromoutlet2804. The angle β preferably ranges from five degrees to twenty degrees, and is more preferably about least fifteen degrees. It is especially important to prevent commingling of water in this manner where the filtration and purification processes have antimicrobial or antiviral applications.
• A[0119]rounded end cap2814 coversend opening2816 in theexternal faucet spout2800.End cap2814 snaps into place overend opening2816 by the action of a plurality of flexible barbed fingers, e.g.,fingers2818 and2820, upon a correspondinginternal rim2822 on the interior ofexternal faucet spout2800.
• FIG. 29 depicts a first preferred embodiment for a filter end of[0120]life indicator assembly2900 that can be installed withinend opening2816 ofexternal faucet spout2800. Water passes throughhole2912 and into Y-connector2914.
• Y-[0121]connector2902 contains a pinnedspring2916, which is loaded in tension tobias plunger2918 towardsflow control assembly2902. Afirst passage2920 leads to filteredwater discharge opening2922, which threadably connects withpassage2920. Asecond passage2924 permits plunger2918 to contact areed switch2926.Reed switch2926 is bonded tosecond passage2924 to form a watertight seal.Reed switch2924 is in electrical contact with an electronic means such as printedcircuit board2928, which contains a processor, clock, memory, and associated circuitry as required to accumulate volumes of filtered water and track time, as explained below in further detail. Anelastomeric battery holder2940 is provided to hold areplaceable battery2930 within space2931, in order to power thecircuit board2928 while preventing external water from invading the filter end oflife indicator assembly2900. • In operation, the action of water upon[0123]plunger2918 drives plunger intoreed switch2926. The closing ofreed switch2926 causescircuit board2928 to begin tracking time.Circuit board2928 converts this time into a volume of flow by multiplying the time by the substantially constant rate of flow that is provided by the action offlow control assembly2902.Circuit board2928 then causes a cumulative volume of flow to be displayed onLCD2934.Circuit board2928 may cause other information to be displayed onLCD2934, including the remaining life of a filter in terms of volume or projected days of remaining life based upon historical consumption patterns. Areset button2938 can be depressed to reset the accumulated flow volume that is stored incircuit board2928. Additional detail with respect to this process of tracking time and volume is provided in FIG. 29, as well as the discussion below.
• FIG. 30 depicts a midsectional view of a modified escutcheon mounted[0124]filter assembly3000 that can be used in place of the filtration assembly depicted in FIG. 10. Afiltration body sleeve3002 contains afilter core body3004. A slidingcollet assembly3006 retainsfiltration body sleeve3002 in fixed position with respect toescutcheon plate3008.Escutcheon plate3008 may be identical to the device shown in FIG. 2, wherefiltration body sleeve3002 may be placed inescutcheon114 or equivalent structures. A specializedend piece assembly3010 provides for the transfer of water throughfilter core body3004 in a radially inboard direction. The filter material can be paper or a purely mechanical filtration material, but it is preferred to embed the filtration material with a chemical treatment means. This chemical treatment means can include a chemical scrubber, such as activated carbon or KDF™ material. The chemical treatment means can also include a biocide, such as a halogenated quaternary amine. These chemical treatment means may be mixed with or bound to a plastic matrix for support, e.g., a polyethylene matrix, which functions as a mechanical filter. Theinterior portion3017 offilter core body3004 may be packed with additional chemical treatment means, such as a water softening agent in the form of a hexametaphosphate or tribasic potassium phosphate, and a pH buffer or flavoring agent, e.g., calcium carbonate.Filter core body3004 is glued or inertia welded at opposite ends to amale nipple3018 and a male threaded cap3019.

• In operation, assembly filters water on a demand basis by the actuation of handle[0129]112 (see FIG. 1). Oncefilter core body3004 has reached the end of its useful life, it is renewed or replaced by prying away the decorative ornamentaltop piece3014 and twisting male threaded cap3019 to unscrew it from sealing engagement with female threadedcap3012.Filter core body3004 rises with this unscrewing action under the bias ofspring3042 asmale nipple3018 unseats fromfemale boss3040. A newfilter core body3004 is installed by inserting the filter core body intofiltration body sleeve3002 and twisting in the reverse direction until the assembly reaches the configuration shown in FIG. 30.
• It will b appreciated that the features of FIGS. 30 and 32 including the bottom connection of[0130]tubes3044 and3052 inend piece assembly3010 permits a wide angle of mounting options. In comparison to thetubes302 and304 shown in FIG. 3, the bottom mounting oftubes3044 and3052 permits mounting of the filter assembly attached tofiltration body sleeve3002 at any remote site. For example, this concept makes possible the fourth hole mount ofassembly1300, which is separate from the housing106 (see FIG. 2). The assembly attached tofiltration body sleeve3002 may also be mounted on a retaining device completely below the sink deck or in a cabinet underneath a sink, or tubing may convey water for filtration into a separate room where several filters may be maintained at one time, e.g., in hospital settings or group homes.
• FIG. 31 provides additional detail with respect to sliding[0131]collet assembly3006.Lower piece3020 contains a plurality of inner stabilizers, e.g.,stabilizers3100 and3102 having an inner diameter approximating the regular outer diameter of filtration body sleeve3002 (see also FIG. 30).Indicia3104 and3106 provide a directional orientation for the installation of slidingcollet assembly3006, which is installed from the bottom offiltration body sleeve3002.Upper piece3022 is then screwed onto male threaded top3026 untillower end3106 engagesshoulder3024. This action permits, the top of female threadedend3030 to pass beneath the top of the flexible sections, e.g.,section3028. In this configuration, the flexible sections are free to expand in a radially outboard direction as they open to accommodaterib3016 whilecollet assembly3006 is raised along the exterior offiltration body sleeve3002.Upper piece3022 is then rotated relative to lowerpiece3020 for the purpose of raisingshoulder3032 into engagement withescutcheon plate3008 while driving selected portions of the flexible sections, e.g.,section3028, having radially inboard structure for complimentary engagement withrib3016 into engagement with the same. This arrangement places a compressive load oncollet assembly3006 and a corresponding tensile load onfiltration body sleeve3002, thus, lockingfiltration body sleeve3002 into a fixed position with respect toescutcheon plate3008.
• The outer wall[0132]3108 is provided with a plurality of gripping surfaces, e.g., grippingsurfaces3110 and3112. The surfaces are shown as truncated pyramidal structures, but may also be any other shape that provides resistance for gripping, e.g., ovaloid or rectangular protrusions, as well as recesses or grooves. Similarly, exterior gripping structures ribs such asrib3114 may be added tolower piece3020 to assist in rotation.
• FIG. 32 depicts a midsectional view of another modified escutcheon mounted[0133]filter assembly3200 that can be used in place of the filtration assemblies which are depicted in FIGS. 10 and 30. In FIG. 32, like numbering of identical elements has been retained with respect to FIG. 30. Differences between thefilter assembly3200 and thefilter assembly3000 include the addition of an optionalinterior core assembly3202, as well as an interlockingassembly3203 that provides interengagement between afilter body cap3204 and a snappingcap cover3206 to prevent unintentional counterclockwise outrotation. Additional differences include the provision of anend nipple3208 having interior flow control structure that can replace or supplement theflow control assembly2902, which is shown in FIG. 29, and a hollowinterior tube3210.
• The hollow[0134]interior tube3210 is fixedly mounted inside acylindrical filter core3212. Aninterior plenum3214 separateshollow tube3210 from thecylindrical filter core3212, which is preferably made of resin-bound activated carbon.Hollow tube3210 has a plurality ofupper perforations3216 leading to an interior sequence of stacked beds A, B, and C. These beds may contain any material for the treatment and purification of water, e.g., a microfilter, a bundle of ultrafiltration capillary tubes, devices, calcium carbonate, KDF, or hexametaphosphates. Thus, water flows radially inboard through thecylindrical filter core3212, upinterior plenum3214 away fromend nipple3208, intoperforations3216, and sequentially through stacked beds A, B, and C for discharge throughend nipple3208. There may be any number of stacked beds A, B, and C, or materials for these beds may be intermixed into a single combined bed.
• FIG. 33 provides additional detail with respect to the interlocking[0135]assembly3203. Thefiltration body sleeve3002 has acrimp3300 that binds thefiltration body sleeve3202 with interiorly threadedsleeve cap3302 havinginboard threads3304. Thefilter body cap3204 has corresponding outboard threads3306 engaging theinboard threads3304. An O-ring seal3308 resides in channel3310 to seal against thefiltration body sleeve3002. Anadhesive sealant3312 bonds thecylindrical filter core3212 to filterbody cap3204 with the assistance of anaxial alignment plug3312. Atensile shoulder3314 prevents thesleeve cap3302 from being pulled through theescutcheon1312.
• FIG. 34 depicts the[0136]filter body cap3204 partially rotated into thesleeve cap3302. As the filter cartridge (or replacement filter cartridge) is almost nearly fully inserted into the filter housing,wedge3402 contacts the upper rim ofsleeve cap3302 to offer resistance against rotation, which resistance must be overcome by the application of additional force until thewedge3402 is fully rotated intorecess3406 to provide a positive lock at the point of full inward rotation. The point of full inward rotation is illustrated byline3408 to represent the top ofcap3204 at full insertion. Similarly, the lockingassembly3400 provides for a difficult initial outrotation followed by easier outrotation indicating a loss of the positive lock.
• FIG. 35 depicts features that are used in a second locking mechanism.[0137]Filter body cap3204 andsleeve cap3302 have mutually alignedconcave recesses3500 and3502 at the point of full inrotation shown in FIG. 34. A raisedrectangular boss3504 is present on thesleeve cap3302. While FIG. 35 is a front view, an identical set of concave recesses (not depicted in FIG. 35) are present at the rear.Cap cover3206 is shown from a midsectional view. The axial wall3506 ofcap cover3206 contains a plurality of vertical oraxial ribs3508 that protrude radially inward and function to keep cap cover aligned withsleeve cap3302 while helping to prevent undesirable rocking or wobbling motion ofcap cover3206 relative tosleeve cap3302. An inwardly raised lockingchannel lug3510 has alower lip3512.Cap cover3206 contains a pair of opposed lockingchannel lugs3510 that protrude into theconcave recesses3500 and3502 to prevent outrotation offilter body cap3204 whencap cover3206 is fully installed onsleeve cap3302 in the direction ofarrow3514. Thelower lips3512 snap beneath their correspondingrectangular bosses3502 to provide resistance against the subsequent removal ofcap cover3206.Arcuate recesses3514 and3516 may be engaged by a tool that is preferably designed for corresponding engagement and rotational motion ofbody cap3204 relative tosleeve cap3302.
• FIG. 36 is a midsectional view providing greater detail with regard to[0138]end nipple3208. In FIG. 36, like numbering of identical parts has been retained with respect to FIG. 32. Adhesive3600 bonds endnipple3208 to filtercore3212. Acentral male member3602 is coaxially aligned with a correspondingfemale receptor3604 in theend piece assembly3010.Male member3602 is circumscribed by a channel3606 that contains an O-ring seal3608 isolating a supply side3610 from adischarge side3612 ofend piece assembly3010. Thefemale receptor3604 is provided with an inwardlybeveled ramp3616, which is used to guide the O-ring seal3606 to a central position during installation. The upper portion ofmale member3602 opens to receive aflow control assembly3618 including an elastomeric disk3620 having a concave face3622 proximate arigid shoulder tube3624. Elastomeric disk3620 has acentral opening3623 and is operably configured to deform under the influence of pressure and regulate flow according to the same principles of operation as does flowcontrol assembly2902.Flow control assembly3618 may be used in place offlow control assembly2902, and the advantage to usingflow control assembly3618 is that flow control assembly is replaced every time thefilter core3212 is replaced. A check valve3626, e.g., a flapper valve, is preferably installed within thefemale receptor3604 to prevent reverse flow of water.
• The[0139]filter core3212 has unique dimensions permitting it to drop into thefiltration body sleeve3002, which, in turn, is able to fit through a conventional hole in a sink deck. The length to diameter ratio of the filter core preferably ranges from 8:1 to 12:1, wherein the most preferred ratio in the case of activated carbon material is 10:1. The length of the filter may be increased or decreased, as needed, to permit the water that is undergoing filtration and purification sufficient residence time for those purposes.
• A significant advantage of the interaction between the[0140]end cap3602 andend piece assembly3010, as shown in FIG. 36, is that thefilter core3212 is not placed under a significant compressive load in conditions of normal use. Other sealing mechanisms include knife-edge seals that would contactfilter core3212 in the areas ofadhesives3600 and3312. These seals weaken with time due to repetitive repressurizations, temperature variations, and plastic creep. The sealing forces on O-rings3608 and3310 are normal to the axis offilter core3212, as opposed to a sealing force that is parallel to the axis, and the resultant seal is much more durable.
• The[0141]flow control assemblies2902 and3618 are each designed to maintain a constant rate of flow of about three quarters of a gallon of water per minute at all pressures that may be encountered in the intended environment of use, e.g. from fifty psi to two hundred psi. Each of these assemblies is operably positioned to regulate all flow of filtered water that goes to the end oflife indicator assembly2900. Thus, the volumetric flow of filtered water may be accumulated by circuit board2928 (see FIG. 29) using the time integration of flow at the constant rate that the flow control assemblies provide.
• FIG. 37 is a process schematic diagram demonstrating the operation process P[0142]3700 of an electronic means such as a microchip or acircuit board2928, which is shown in FIG. 29 and FIG. 39 described below. Thecircuit board2928 is preferably programmed to select a specified filter design lifetime in step P3702 according to design limits for the filter, e.g., ninety days. This specified lifetime may be based upon controlling parameters, e.g., seal life or laboratory factors showing bacterial growth in a particular filtration medium over time. The remaining design lifetime is calculated as the difference between the specified filter design lifetime and the elapsed time since replacement of the filter. A plurality of external buttons or a computer interface (not depicted) may be provided to select an environment of use, e.g., city water or well water, or the design life may be sensed electronically from the filter according to an embedded microchip (not depicted).
• In step P[0143]3704, the printedcircuit board2928 accumulates historical volumetric consumption on the basis of timed flow at a specified constant rate (e.g., three quarters of a gallon per minute) to arrive at an accumulated total volume of filtered water, and in step P3706 subtracts the accumulated total volume of filtered water from a specified volumetric design life of the filter, e.g., 250 gallons, to arrive at a remaining volumetric filter life. The rate of consumption of filtered water is also tracked over an interval of time, e.g., the most recent three days or five days. This rate of consumption is projected forward in step P3708 by dividing the rate of consumption into the remaining volumetric filter life, e.g., 250 gallons less the accumulated flow volume, in order to determine a remaining filter life in time units. Step P3710 entails determining whether the remaining specified filter life (e.g. of ninety days minus the number of days elapsed since first use or replacement of the filter) is lesser than the projected time that remains for complete use of the volumetric design life based upon recent historical consumption patterns. For example, the remaining volumetric filter life from step P3706 may be subtracted from the remaining time for filter expiration, as calculated in step P3702. If the result of this calculation is negative, then process P3700 proceeds to step P3712. If the result is positive then the process advances to step P3714. The display onLCD2934 is, accordingly, a value equal to the lesser of the remaining filter life in days pursuant to the design specified filter life (step P3712) or the projected filter life (step P3714). Remaining life in terms of volume may also be displayed. Additional alphanumeric displays of information may also be presented on theLCD2934, e.g., a percentage of remaining filter volume according to a volumetric design specification, a percentage of consumption according to this life, or a warning that filter maintenance may be desirable. Other displays, e.g., a red, amber and green system of lights, may be used in place of an LCD, but the LCD is preferred for its ability to display alphanumeric information. The alphanumeric display may be in color as well.
• FIG. 38 is a top plan view of handle[0144]112 (see FIG. 1) show with a horizontal range of motion that is defined by the five way valve1500 (see FIGS. 15 and 25). This range of motion extends in a counterclockwise direction across arc2508a, which corresponds to a horizontal domain where the mixed water feels hotter to the touch but grows cooler towardspoint3800, which is a neutral point where warm mixed water is flowing. Arc2508bis a second horizontal domain in which water continues to flow colder in a counterclockwise direction of rotation forhandle112 untilpoint2506 is reached where thevalve1500 is essentially flowing cold water. At any point on arcs2508aand2508b, handle112 may be pivoted or rocked up or down generally in the vertical domain, as illustrated by double headedarrow3802. Pivoting thehandle112 upward causes the volumetric rate of flow for the water throughvalve1500 to increase. Pivoting thehandle112 downward causes the rate to decrease until flow entirely ceases.
• In the preferred embodiment, handle[0145]112 cannot be pivoted up or down once it rotatespast point2506 and intoarc2504, which is yet a third horizontal domain. Pivoting motion is here prevented by ramp2500 (see FIG. 25). In the domain of arc2508b, handle112 must be fully pivoted downward to cease flow of unfiltered water beforehandle112 can be rotated intoarc2504. An initial resistance is preferably felt upon the entry ofhandle112 intoarc2504, due to the action of the spring detent assembly2512 (shown in FIG. 25). The initial resistance must be overcome in order for the user to urge thehandle112 to rotate fully througharc2504 towardsposition2502 where thevalve1500 is fully open and the volumetric rate of flow for filtered water is at a predetermined maximum value, e.g., three quarters of a gallon per minute. Handle112 may be rotated clockwise towardspoint2506 to reduce the volumetric flow of water as selectively required in the intended environment of use, or thehandle112 may be rotated counterclockwise frompoint2506 towardspoint2502 until a desired rate of filtered water flow is achieved. This rate of filtered water flow may be less than the maximum flow rate corresponding toposition2502.
• FIG. 39 depicts a second preferred embodiment of an end of life indicator assembly[0146]3900. In FIG. 39, like numbering of identical components has been retained with respect to FIG. 29. The end of life indicator assembly3900 includes a cylindricalplunger housing body3902 having one ormore flow openings3904. Atensile spring3906 resides in theplunger housing body3902 proximally to flowopenings3904 and is mounted in afirst cavity portion3907 to retract an axially aligned plunger orpiston3908. Ashoulder flange3910 on thepiston3908 seals against asecond cavity portion3911 of theplunger housing3902 in such a manner as to causepiston3908 to advance upon passage of water therethrough, due to the positioning ofhandle112 in the domain of arc2504 (shown in FIG.38), against the force oftensile spring3906 wherein the pressurized filtered water enters through theflow openings3904 untilshoulder flange3910 advances into third cavity portion3912. Stabilizers3914 and3916 may be provided to keep thepiston3908 axially aligned withinchamber3910, which is in fluidic communication with the filteredwater discharge nozzle2922 for the discharge of filtered water concomitant with the forward motion ofpiston3908.
• The forward motion of[0147]piston3908 brings amagnetic nose3918 proximate a magnetically actuated sensor, such as a reed switch3920. The reed switch3920, when magnetically actuated by proximity to or contact withmagnetic nose3918, activates thecircuit board2928 for the accumulation of volumetric flow information and operation according to FIG. 37. TheLCD2932 is visible through a translucent orsemi-opaque window3922.
• The electronic means[0148]3926, which preferably includes the printedcircuit board2928,battery2930,battery holder2940,display2932,display window3922 and reed switch3920, may be removed from the end of the faucet spout by unscrewing the filteredwater discharge nozzle2922, removing the same, and pulling thesleeve3924 in which the electronic means are disposed forward in the direction of arrow3928. Thesleeve3924 at least partially surrounds the forward end of theplunger housing body3902, and includes an elastomeric portion3930 at least partially surrounding the electronic means3926 to seals against the entry of water or other contaminants into the electronics area. Theplunger housing body3902,piston3908,spring3906, and end cover on the distal end of theplunger housing body3902 remain in place while the electronics may be removed and replaced. Anend cover3932 together with O-ring seals3934,3936 and3938 isolate the electronic means3926 from water.
• An[0149]electrical contact mechanism3940 is used to reset thecircuit board2928, e.g., as by stored resetting time and accumulated volume values stored therein) and FIG. 40 provides additional detail with respect to thecontact mechanism3940. The assembledbattery2930 andbattery holder2940 are retained in such a manner as to make contact betweenbattery2930 andelectrical contact4000. Thus, printedcircuit2928 is in electrical communication withbattery2930 throughelectrical contact4000.Battery2930 is driven to touch aninsulative step4002, e.g., an O-ring, by force that is place upon thenose2942 ofbattery holder2940, as by auser touching nose2942 for the purpose of resetting the stored values incircuit board2928. The resultant forward motion ofbattery2928 causesbattery2928 to ride up onto theinsulative step4002 in the direction ofarrow4006, which breaks the contact between thebattery2930 and theelectrical contact4000, as shown in FIG. 41. The break in electrical contact causes thecircuit board2928 to erase its stored memory and return to an initialized setting, such as zero accumulated volume and a specified initial filter design lifetime.
• The battery holder[0150]2940 (also shown in FIG. 29) is preferably formed of an electrically insulative material, such as rubber or a rubber-like elastomer. Thebattery holder2940 is preferably V-shaped so as to cup the battery and leave less than 180° of the battery periphery exposed to hold thebattery2930 securely therein. Thebattery holder2940 is deformable so as to allow the user to insert and remove the battery.2930 Thebattery holder2940 also helps form a protective seal atshoulder2950 against external moisture to protect the interior electronic means. Theexterior wall2944 of the battery holder is preferably flexible enough to permit a user to depress and deform thebattery holder2940 inwardly (such as with the assistance of a pen) to move the battery inwardly in the direction ofarrow4006. As thebattery2930 moves inwardly, the distal exposed edge of the battery rides up on the electrically insulative and preferablyelastic step4002 causing thebattery2930 to move out of touch with the electronic means thereby interrupting the supply of power thereto and causing the electronic means to reset. When the user releases pressure against thebattery holder2940, thebattery2930 returns in the direction ofarrow4100 under bias from the elastomericouter wall2944 towards its original or normal position, as shown in FIG. 40, to reestablish electrical contact.
• Those skilled in the art will understand that the preferred embodiments described above may be subjected to apparent modifications without departing from the true scope and spirit of the invention. The inventors, accordingly, hereby state their intention to rely upon the Doctrine of Equivalents, in order to protect their full rights in the invention.[0151]

Claims (41)

1. A filtration cartridge comprising:

a filter core having a first end and a second end, said filter core presenting an elongated axis of symmetry;

a threaded cap bonded to said first end; and

an end nipple bonded to said second end,

each of said threaded cap and said end nipple having a radially outboard O-ring seal mounted on said threaded cap and said end nipple to place respective radially inboard sealing forces on said threaded cap and said end nipple in an intended environment of use, said radially inboard sealing forces being normal to said elongated axis of symmetry.

2. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 1 wherein said filter core is a tubular member having an interior core opening.

3. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 2 including a flow control assembly in direct communication with said interior core opening.

4. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 3 wherein said flow control assembly includes a flexible disk having a central opening.

5. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 4 wherein said central opening is in coaxial alignment with said end nipple and said interior core opening.

6. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 2 wherein said interior core opening contains a linear bed of fluid treating material.

7. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 2 including a hollow tube within said interior core opening, said hollow tube containing a linear path of fluid treating material.

8. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 7 wherein said linear path comprises an ultrafiltration bundle.

9. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 7 wherein said linear path comprises a series of stacked beds of water treating agents.

10. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 7 wherein said hollow tube is set back from said filter core a sufficient distance to form an interior core plenum separating said hollow tube from said filter core.

11. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 10, said hollow tube having perforations remote from said end nipple, said end nipple being operably configured as an outlet, to permit radially inboard flow of fluid through said filter core into said interior core plenum with subsequent flow through said interior core plenum being away from said end nipple prior to entry of flow into said hollow tube.

12. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 1 wherein said threaded cap has at least one concave surface providing means for interengagement with a counter rotation device.

13. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 1 wherein said threaded cap has a downwardly raised deformable bump for use as a counter rotation device.

14. A filtration cartridge comprising:

a filter core having a first end and a second end, said filter core having an interior core opening and presenting an elongated axis of symmetry;

a threaded cap bonded to said first end;

an end nipple bonded to said second end; and

a flow control assembly in direct communication with said interior core opening.

15. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 14 wherein said flow control assembly includes a flexible disk having a central opening aligned with said elongated axis of symmetry.

16. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 15 wherein said central opening is mounted in said end nipple in alignment with said interior core opening.

17. A filtration cartridge comprising:

a filter core having a first end and a second end, said filter core having an interior core opening and presenting an elongated axis of symmetry;

a cap bonded to said first end;

an end nipple bonded to said second end; and

a hollow tube within said interior core opening, said hollow tube containing a linear path of fluid treating material.

18. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 17 wherein said linear path comprises an ultrafiltration bundle.

19. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 17 wherein said linear path comprises a series of stacked beds of water treating agents.

20. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 17 wherein said hollow tube is set back from said filter core a sufficient distance to form an interior core plenum separating said hollow tube from said filter core.

22. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 20, said hollow tube having perforations remote from said end nipple, said end nipple being operably configured as an outlet, to permit radially inboard flow of fluid through said filter core into said interior core plenum with subsequent flow through said interior core plenum being away from said end nipple prior to entry of flow into said hollow tube.

23. A filtration cartridge comprising:

a filter core having a first end and a second end, said filter core having an interior core opening and presenting an elongated axis of symmetry;

a cap bonded to said first end; and

an end nipple bonded to said second end,

said threaded cap having at least one concave surface providing means for interengagement with a counter rotation device.

24. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 23 wherein said threaded cap has a downwardly raised deformable bump for use as a counter rotation device.

25. The filtration cartridge as set forth inclaim 23 including a second concave surface positioned across from said at least one concave surface.

26. A counter rotation assembly comprising:

a threaded cap having a first recess providing means for interengagement with a counter rotation cap;

a correspondingly threaded receptacle for said threaded cap, said correspondingly threaded receptacle having a second recess in axial alignment with said first recess when said threaded cap is fully rotated into said correspondingly threaded receptacle; and

a counter rotation cap having an axial wall and a radially inboard locking lug configured for receipt in said first recess and said second recess when said threaded cap is fully rotated into said correspondingly threaded receptacle.

27. The counter rotation assembly as set forth inclaim 26 wherein said locking lug has a lower lip and said a correspondingly threaded receptacle having a boss for engaging said lower lip proximate said second recess to retain said counter rotation cap on said counter rotation assembly.

28. A five way valve including comprising:

a housing;

a pair of plates including a first plate shiftable with respect to a second plate;

said pair of plates, in combination, providing means for selective alignment permitting passage of cold water for discharge, cold water to filter, mixed water for discharge, and hot water for discharge, corresponding to selective positioning of said plates;

said selective positioning of said plates being such that there is a mixed water rotational domain extending from a hot water position to a cold water position, and a filtered water rotational domain as an extension of said mixed water domain towards said cold water position;

means for supplying cold water to said pair of plates; and

means for supplying hot water to said pair of plates.

29. The five way valve as set forth inclaim 28 including means for preventing simultaneous flow of filtered and unfiltered water.

30. The five way valve as set forth inclaim 28 including means for providing an initial resistance upon entry into said filtered water rotational domain.

31. The five way valve as set forth inclaim 28 wherein said means for providing an initial resistance is a spring detent assembly.

32. The five way valve as set forth inclaim 28 wherein said extension of said mixed water domain towards said cold water position is in a counterclockwise direction of rotation.

33. A faucet for use in dispensing filtered water comprising:

a first pathway for dispensing unfiltered water from a first outlet;

a second pathway for dispensing filtered water from a second outlet, said second pathway being separate from said first pathway to prevent commingling of filtered and unfiltered water;

said second outlet being forward of said first outlet and inclined to discharge filtered water on an axis rotated at least five degrees from a discharge axis of said first outlet.

34. A flow metering assembly comprising:

a mechanically actuated device;

a sensor configured to provide a signal responsive to actuation of said mechanically actuated device by flow of a fluid in direct contact with said mechanically actuated device, said signal indicating that flow is occurring;

means for accumulating volumetric flow information for said fluid by time integration of said signal over an assumed constant rate of flow; and

a flow control assembly providing a substantially constant rate of flow corresponding to said assumed constant rate of flow when said fluid is flowing through said flow metering assembly.

35. The flow metering assembly as set forth inclaim 33 wherein said flow control assembly resides in a filter cartridge and is operably positioned to regulate all flow of filtered fluid from said filter to said sensor.

36. A filter end of life indicator assembly comprising:

a filter having a volumetric design life and a time duration design life;

a volume accumulation circuit used to totalize flow through said filter and provide corresponding accumulated total volum values;

a time circuit configured to track elapsed time since renewal of said filter and provide corresponding accumulated time values;

a processor configured to compare said accumulated volume against said volumetric design life and project a remaining time value life of said filter based upon historical consumption rates;

said processor also being configured to select a value as the lesser of remaining time duration design life of said filter and a remaining time value life of said filter based upon historical consumption rates, and

means for displaying said value as an indicator of remaining filter life.

37. The filter end of life indicator assembly as set forth inclaim 36 wherein said volume accumulation circuit includes:

a mechanically actuated device;

a sensor configured to provide a signal responsive to actuation of said mechanically actuated device by flow of a fluid in direct contact with said mechanically actuated device, said signal indicating that flow is occurring;

means for accumulating volumetric flow information for said fluid by time integration of said signal over an assumed constant rate of flow;

means for accumulating volumetric flow information for said fluid by time integration of said signal over an assumed constant rate of flow; and

a flow control assembly providing a substantially constant rate of flow corresponding to said assumed constant rate of flow when said fluid is flowing through said flow metering assembly.

38. The filter end of life indicator assembly as set forth inclaim 36 wherein the end of life indicator assembly is mounted on a nose of a faucet.

39. The filter end of life indicator assembly as set forth inclaim 38 wherein the end of life indicator assembly is configured for removal upon prior removal of a nozzle for dispensing filtered water.

40. The filter end of life indicator assembly as set forth inclaim 38 including an elastomeric battery holder configured for selective direct insertion into and from removal in said end of life indicator assembly from the exterior of said end of life indicator assembly.

41. The filter end of life indicator assembly as set forth inclaim 38 including means for resetting stored values in said volume circuit and said time circuit.

42. The filter end of life indicator assembly as set forth in claim41 wherein said resetting means includes an insulative step mounted proximate said battery to permit battery to ride over said insulative step under influence of forces acting against elastomeric bias in said battery holder to break an electrical contact.
