Abstract

The present invention is directed to a method and system for deriving traffic demands for a packet-switched network. A novel model of defining traffic demands as a volume of load originating from an ingress link and destined to a set of egress links enables support for traffic engineering and performance debugging of large operational packet-switched networks.

Description

Claims (14)

What is claimed is:
1. A computer readable medium containing executable program instructions for measuring traffic demand in a packet-switched network comprising the steps of:
receiving data representing network traffic destined for a plurality of destination network addresses;
associating each of the destination network address with a set of egress links; and
computing network traffic demand by aggregating network traffic travelling between an ingress link and one of the sets of egress links.
2. The computer readable medium ofclaim 1 wherein the data is derived from packet flow measurements in an operational network.
3. The computer readable medium ofclaim 2 wherein the packet flow measurements are obtained at all ingress links in the packet-switched network.
4. The computer readable medium ofclaim 2 wherein the packet flow measurements are obtained at peering links in the packet switched network.
5. The computer readable medium ofclaim 4 wherein packet flow measurements are obtained at both ingress and egress peering links and wherein the step of computing network traffic demand further comprises the steps of:
computing network traffic demand for inbound flows travelling from a peering link to a backbone link;
computing network traffic demand for transit flows travelling from a peering link to a peering link, discarding double-counted flows; and
computing network traffic demand for outbound flows travelling from an access link to a peering link.
6. The computer readable medium ofclaim 5 wherein the network traffic demand for outbound flows is computed by using network topology information to determine which ingress link initiated the traffic demand.
7. The computer readable medium ofclaim 1 wherein a destination prefix address is associated with each set of egress links.
8. A method of measuring traffic demand in a packet-switched network comprising the steps of:
receiving data representing network traffic destined for a plurality of destination network addresses;
associating each of the destination network address with a set of egress links; and
computing network traffic demand by aggregating network traffic travelling between an ingress link and one of the sets of egress links.
9. The method ofclaim 8 wherein the data is derived from packet flow measurements in an operational network.
10. The method ofclaim 9 wherein the packet flow measurements are obtained at all ingress links in the packet-switched network.
11. The method ofclaim 9 wherein the packet flow measurements are obtained at peering links in the packet switched network.
12. The method ofclaim 11 wherein packet flow measurements are obtained at both ingress and egress peering links and wherein the step of computing network traffic demand further comprises the steps of:
computing network traffic demand for inbound flows travelling from a peering link to a backbone link;
computing network traffic demand for transit flows travelling from a peering link to a peering link, discarding double-counted flows; and
computing network traffic demand for outbound flows travelling from an access link to a peering link.
13. The method ofclaim 12 wherein the network traffic demand for outbound flows is computed by using network topology information to determine which ingress link initiated the traffic demand.
14. The method ofclaim 8 wherein a destination prefix address is associated with each set of egress links.
