My present invention has for its chief aim the provision of a stocking foot protector which will not only conform accurately to the foot of the wearer, but which will hold itself in place without the aid of separate or extraneous securing means. This desideratum I realize, as hereinafter fully disclosed, in a stocking foot protector knit for the most part of a non-elastic yarn in simulation of the foot of an ordinary stocking, and having incorporated along opposite sides of its sole portion, longitudinaliy-contractile, knit-in edge margins of elastic yarn.

A further aim of my invention is to secure the above advantages 1n a stocking foot protector which lends itself to formation in continuous succession with others on a circular knitting machine such as featured in my earlier application supra, suitably adapted for the` purpose.

Still other objects and attendant advantages of this invention will be manifest from the detailed description which follows of the attached drawing, wherein Fig. I is a perspective view showing my improvednstocking foot protector.

As delineated in Figs. I and II, my improvedT` stocking foot protector resembles the foot portion of an ordinary seamless stocking except for the omission of an instep, its toe and heel I0 and II respectively having the diagonal sutures I2 Aand I3 characteristic of such hosiery. 'I'he toe and heel portions I0 and I I are knit from woolen, silk or cotton yarns of comparatively heavy gage for the purposes of resistivity to wear, and for warmth. The connecting sole portion I4, it will be noted, reaches up to a level slightly above the inner ends of the diagonal toe and heel sutures I2 and I3 at opposite sides of the protector. The main or central section Ida of the sole portion I4 is knit from a woolen, silk or cotton yarn Y (Fig. III) of a gage somewhat lighter than that used in the toe and heel portions I0 and II; Lwhile the relatively narrow marginal sections Ilb along the longitudinal edges of the sole portion are knit from separate covered elastic yarns whereof one this application `luly 11, 75

is designated Y in Fig. III, said marginal sections being terminated at opposite ends somewhat inward of the toe and heel sutures I2 and I3.- As shown in Fig. III, the section Ita and the marginal sections Ib of the sole It arerespectively formed as selvaged webs whereof the contiguous end loops in successive courses are inter'- knitted at each side`of the protector 'along definite pairs of fabric wales/W after the manner of split foot hosiery. From Fig. III itwill be observed that the selvage loops I along the outer edges of the sole portion I 4 are bf peculiar formation and each comprehends twov courses of the knitting. The reason forthis is clearly pointed out in the copending application hereinbefore referred to. i l

When the protector is worn, the elastic margins Mb act as contractile straps to maintain the side edges of the protector under tension longitudinally and so effectively hold it against displacement on the foot of the wearer. In this function the elastic margins Mb are assisted by a strand of elastic yarn I5 which is attached along the`crosswise edge of the toe I0 and which is anchored at its ends, by sewing or otherwise, in the fabric of the protector adjacent the corners of the toe sutures' I2. An insert I6 of'leather or other material aording a rough surface is attached by sewing along the upper edge of the heel I las conlventionally indicated at I1. This insert, by co action-with the fabric of the stocking, serves to -prevent the back end of the protector from slipping off the heel of the wearer.

Having thus described my invention, I\claim:

l. As a new article of manufacturaa knitted stocking foot protector having a heel, a toe, and a connecting sole portion of a width to extend substantially half way up the sides of the foot,l said sole portion comprising knit-in edge margins of .elastic yarn.

2. Asa new article of manufacture, a knitted stocking foot protector having a heel, a toe, and a connecting selvage-edged sole portion of a' width to extend substantially half way up the sides of the foot, 'said sole portion comprising knit-in margins of elastic yarn. I

As a new article of manufacture, a knitted 'stocking foot protector having a heel, a toe, and a connecting sole portion of a width to extend substantially half way up the sides of the foot; said sole portion comprising knit selvage-edged marginal sections of separate elastic yarns, and a split suture-connected intermediate selvageedged section of non-elastic yarn.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a knitted stocking foot protector having a seamless heel, a seamless-toe, and a connecting sole portion with its longitudinal edges substantially in line with the inner ends of the diagonal heel and toe sutures, said sole portion comprising knit-in edge margins of elastic yarn.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a knitted stocking foot protector having a seamless heel, a seamless toe, and a selvage-edged connecting sole portion with its longitudinal edges substantially in line with the inner ends of the diagonal heel and toe sutures, said lsole portion comprising knit-in edge margins of elastic yarn.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a knitted stocking foot protector having a seamless heel, a seamless toe, and a connecting sole portion with its longitudinal edges substantially in line with theiinner ends of the diagonal heel and toe sutures, said sole portion comprising knit selVage-edged marginal sections of elastic yarn and a split suture-connected selvage-edged intermediate section of non-elastic yarn.

As a new article of manufacture, a knitted stocking foot protector having a seamless heel, a seamless toe, and a connecting sole portion with its longitudinal edges substantially in line with the inner ends of the diagonal heel and toe sutures, said sole portion comprising knitin edge margins of elastic yarn and terminating short of the inner ends of the heel and toe sutures, and knit portions intermediate the inner ends of the heel sutures and the contiguous ends of the margins aforesaid of non-elastic yarn.

8. As a new article of manufacture, a knitted stocking foot protector having a heel, a toe, and a connecting sole portion of an extent to reach substantially half way up the sides of the foot, said sole portion comprising knit-in edge margins of elastic yarn, and a liner of friction material within the heel.

9. As a new article'of manufacture, a knitted stocking foot protector having a heel, a toe, and a connecting sole portion of an extent to reach substantially. half Way up the sides of the foot, said sole portion comprising knit-in edge margins of elastic yarn, and a strand of elastic yarn incorporated with the terminal loops across the top of the toe.
