Abstract

System for compression of digital images comprising low detail areas.

Description

Claims (5)

What is claimed is:
1. An apparatus for compressing a digital image comprising:
(a) means for decomposing said digital image into a set of tiles and for classifying a tile from said set as a low-detail tile; and
(b) means for transform coding each tile in said set of tiles connected to said decomposing means; said transform coding means responsive to said decomposing means classifying a tile from said set of tiles as a low detail tile to determine at least one average pixel value from said low detail tile and to create transform coded data for said tile based upon said at least one average pixel value.
2. The apparatus as recited in
claim 1
, wherein said transform coding means operates in accordance with a JPEG lossy mode standard.
3. The apparatus as recited in
claim 2
, wherein said at least one average pixel value comprises a first average pixel value representative of an average of pixel values from a first quadrant in said tile, a second average pixel value representative of an average of pixel values from a second quadrant in said tile, a third average pixel value representative of an average of pixel values from a third quadrant in said tile, and a fourth average pixel value representative of an average of pixel values from a fourth quadrant in said tile.
4. The apparatus as recited in
claim 1
, wherein said at least one average pixel value comprises a first average pixel value representative of an average of pixel values from a first quadrant in said tile, a second average pixel value representative of an average of pixel values from a second quadrant in said tile, a third average pixel value representative of an average of pixel values from a third quadrant in said tile, and a fourth average pixel value representative of an average of pixel values from a fourth quadrant in said tile.
5. The apparatus of as recited in
claim 3
