Claims;
This invention relates to control mechanism and has for its object the provision of asimple and -efiicient'device which will operate eflicient- 1y to stop an engine'in the event of any abnormal 5 conditions causing a stoppage or excessive decrease of pressure in either theoil or the water line. The invention provides a very simple and compact device which will be held'againstaction to stopthe engine under normal conditions, and
m which will operate -with certainty tostop the "engine when anabnormal condition arises and will then hold the governing mechanism in the inactive position until 'manually re-set. Mounted upon the f'rontplate 1 is a setting lever 2 which is carried by a rock shaft orfulcrum 3 journaled in the front plate, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The lower fulcrum end of the lever 2 is formed into an enlargedcircular head 4 carrying a latch 5 which is slidably mounted in asocket 6 provided therefor upon thehead 4 and is yieldingly held to the front plate 1 by an expansion spring 7 housed in the socket. The latch is provided with an enlargement orabutment 8 against which the rear end of the spring presses and at the front side of the head the latch is equipped with a knob or other form ofhandle 9 by which it may be manually manipulated. Thehead 4 is also provided in its side with an opening 10 which is preferably located at a point approximately diametrically opposite thesocket 6. The fulcrum orrock shaft 3 extends through asleeve 11 which is secured in the front plate 1 and the rear end of the fulcrum or shaft extends beyond the rear end of said sleeve, the rear end of the sleeve constitutmg an abutment against which a cam 12, secured upon the fulcrum, bears while the front end of the sleeve bears against a hub orboss 13 formed on the 1933, swarm. 686,1852

A lay governor shaftl l is slidably supported upon theengine frame at the rear of the'front plate 1 and adjacentthe rear end offthefulcrum 3, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and this lay governor v5 shaft extends across the entire gang of engines and has secured thereon, at proper intervals, arms 7 15'which rise therefrom andcorrespondin numher to the engines in the gang of engines, one arm being provided for each-engine. The arms 10 15; eachcarries at its upper end a pump meter rod 16 which controls the pump associated'with each engine so that, in one position'of the'meter rod, the pump will be-permitted to operate-and in another position it will be cut off from operation. 15 Adjacent the cam 12', an abutment or-collar 17 is secured upon the governor shaft 14and the cam or eccentric '12 bears against said collar in the operation of the device. It will now beunderstood' that'when the-parts-are in the positions illustrated, the engine'will be p'ermitted to operate, andwh'en the engine is to stop,'the setting lever is swungJ-downwardlytoetheil'eftthrough an arc of'90" so that the high part of the cam;12 will bear against the collar 17' and move it and the governor shaft to the right in Fig. 1. Thearm 15 and the metering rod 16 will, of course, follow the movement of the governor shaft and the operation of the pump will be stopped. When the setting lever is thus swung downwardly, the latch 5 will automatically engage in a socket provided therefor in the front plate 1, as will be understood.
In carrying out the present invention, there is secured upon the front plate of the engine, below the head of the setting lever, ahousing 23 within which are mountedbellows 24 and 25, the lower ends of which communicate directly with theoil line 26 and thewater line 27, respectively. The upper ends of the bellows are closed and bear against a cage, 28 which is supported solely by 50 the bellows and is provided with asocket member 29 depending between the bellows, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Alatch pin 30 extends through thesocket 29, axially thereof, and has its ends projected through the top and bottom, respectiveand 25 will be expanded by the pressure exerted. Should thereon through the oil and water lines. a leak in either line develop or for any other reason the pressure exerted thereby upon the respective bellows should drop, the bellows will contract and thespring 33 will then at once expand and cause the cage 28 to move downwardly in the housing and thereby withdrawlthelatch pin 30,"
which is pinned to the cage, as shown at 34, out of engagement with the opening 10 whereupon thespring 21 will at once contract andexert an upward pull upon thepin 19 so that the cam 12 and thefulcrum 3, to which the cam is secured, will be rocked in the proper direction to actuate thegovernor shaft 14 and the meter rod to stop the action of the pump, as previously stated. When thespring 21 thusfactuates the cam, the
setting lever will, of course, be swung downwardly and the -latch.5 will automatically engage the socket provided therefor in the front plate of the engine so that the parts will be held in the inoperative positions until the attendant manually re-sets the device. a r
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided-a verysimple and compact mechanism which may be installed at a very slight expense and will. operate efficiently at all times. While the invention, in one specific form, has been set forth herein-as applied to a Diesel engine, it will function successfully in other applications and maybe applied to any apparatus employing water-cooled or oil-cooledbearings or-which effects lubrication by oil under pressure.
Having'thus described the invention, I claim:
- l. The combination with a setting lever having a lateral head, of yieldable means tending constantly to swing the lever to cut off position, a latch pin normally engaged in the lateral head of the lever to hold it in working position, and pressure controlled means for withdrawing said latch pin upon decrease of pressure-in either of said lines.-.

2. In combination with an engine-setting lever provided with a lateral head having an opening, a latch pin slidable to and from and normally engaging in said opening in the head of the lever, pressure controlled means for retaining the latch pin in engagement with the opening in the head of the lever, and yieldable means tending constantly to withdraw the latch pinwhereby upon decrease of the pressure the setting lever will be released.
'3. The combination with the setting lever of an engine, of a latch arranged to engage the head of thelever and normally hold it in operative position, yieldable means tending constantly to swing the lever to inoperative position, bellows disposed adjacent the latch and connected with the oil and water lines of the engine to be normally held expanded by the pressure in said lines, a cage supported by said bellows and secured to the latch, and a spring acting constantly on the cage in opposition to the bellows whereby upon decrease of pressure in either the oil or the water line the latch will be withdrawn and the setting lever swung to inoperative position. 1 4. The combination of a lay governor shaft, a meter rod connected with said shaft tomove therewith, an abutmenton the shaft, a setting lever, a fulcrumforsaid lever rotatably mounted and having one end disposed adjacent the governor shaft, a cam secured on the end of the fulcrum and arranged to bear against the abutment on the governor shaft, a retractile spring attached to the cam and to a fixed point and tending constantly to swing the high part of the cam against the abutment, a latch carried by the setting lever and arranged to hold the lever in inoperative position, a second latch normally engaging the setting lever and holding it in operative position, and means controlled by the pressure in the oil and water lines of the engine to release the second latch upon. decrease of pressure in either of said lines. i l
5. The combination with a control lever, of a fulcrum carrying the lever, a cam fixed on the fulcrum and arranged to shift a controlled element, means acting onthe cam to turn it and the control lever to stop position, a latch normally holding the control leverin working position,,and
pressure-control means for releasing the latch.
