This invention relates to therapeutical bedpads, and in accordance with the present invention a pad for use of invalids is provided, and is characterized by the provision of a plurality of compartments, each having extending therethrough a tubing thru which a heating or a cooling medium, such as hot or cold water, or a suitable chemical solution, may be caused to circulate for the purpose of heating or cooling the 0 interior of one or more selected sections of the pad.
The invention together with its numerous objects and advantages will be readily understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the pad, with the top member of the pad in position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the pad with the top member removed.
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views taken substantially on the line 33 and line 4-4 respectively of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an end portion of the pad with the top cover of the pad. removed.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it
will be seen that the pad comprises a box-like structure, preferably rectangular in plan and designated by thereference character 5. The box-like body 5 of the pad is made of any suitable material and is open at its top. The outer face of thebottom 6 of the pad is covered with a sheet of suitableinsulating material 7.
v The top cover designated by thereference numeral 8 is adapted to be secured at its edges, to the upper edges of the walls of the box-like body 5 in any suitable manner, preferably in a manner to permit thecover 8 to be readily removed. Obviously detachable fastening elements, such as the well known type of zipper fastener or the like may be employed for securing the marginal edge of thecover 8 to the upper edges of the walls of thebody 5. Thecover 8 is made of suitable resilient material, and the box-like body 5 is also formed of a suitable flexible material.
Spacedtransverse partitions 9 divide the body of the pad intoend compartments 10 and an intermediate compartment 11.
, Each of thecompartments 10, 11 is provided with a pair of supporting ribs orpartitions 12,
together with pairs of supporting ribs orpartitions 13 extending at right angles to thepartitions 12.
, Eachpartition 12 adjacent one end thereof is 'provided with avertical notch 14, while each of thepartitions 13 is provided with a pair of relatively spacednotches 15. Arranged within each of thesections 10, 11, is atube 16, each tube as shown, comprising a plurality of U-shaped sections, interconnected, the tube being formed of one piece, and it will be seen that each tube is supported by the ribs orpartitions 12, 13, thenotches 14 and 15 accommodating the straight and curved portions respectively of the tube as will be clear from a study of Figs. 2 to 4 inelusive.
Eachtube 16 has its ends 16a extending through apertures provided therefor in the sides of thebody 5. The apertures accommodating the ends of thetubes 16 are designated by thereference character 17.
From the description of the invention thus far, it will be apparent that thetubes 16 are almost substantially wholly confined within the pad, and. each tube may have one end thereof connected with a suitable source of supply, whereby heating or cooling means, such as steam, hot or cold water, or a chemical solution, may be forced into the end of the said tube, and flow thru the coils of the tube to pass from the tube at the other end of the tube. It is apparent that all the tubes, or a desired number of the same may be used at the same time, dependent on just how much of the area of the bag is to be heated or cooled.
It is also apparent that the tubes may be formed of flexible material, and may be made of rubber or the like.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is a to be understood that the same is susceptible of further changes,.m0difications and improvements coming within the scope of the appended claims. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. A pad of the character described comprising a body having an internal chamber, a plurality of relatively spaced flexible conduit tubes extending thru the chamber, each conduit having an inlet and an outlet; and relatively angularly arranged partitions in the chambers and provided with notches in their upper edges to receive said tubes and to retain the latter distorted to provide sinuous passages through said chamber.
2. A pad of the character described comprising a box-like body, spaced partitions arranged in the body and dividing the same into a plurality of sections, a sinuous conduit tube arranged in each of said sections, and angularly related partitions arranged in each chamber and provided With notches in their upper edges receiving por- 0 and an outlet, and each of said sections having arranged therein a plurality of relatively angularly disposed partitions supporting a tube and retaining the latter distorted to provide a sinuous passage through the section.
