Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT GFFTCF.
WILLIAM RIKER, OF PENN YAN, NEI/V YORK.
SAFETY-WINCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,263, dated February 2, 1858.
To all wh-0m t may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM BIKER, of Penn Yan, in the county of Yates and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Safety-Vinch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view of the whole winch.
The part designated by letter A is the shaft to which the winch is applied, B the main arm or lever of the winch, C and C the ratchets placed on the shaft one on each side of the lever with the face of one ratchet opposite to the other and fastened firm to the shaft or axle.
D and D are the pawls placed on the sides of the lever and are held to it by clasps and may be fixed in grooves in the lever, they are also attached to the cross lever I, which holds them in position. The lever I, is fastened to the lever B, by a pin or bolt on which it turns freely.
E is a grooved pulley firmly attached to the handle Gr which is made to turn freely on a bolt that is firmly attached to the lever B at right angles with the same.
F is a small grooved pulley and is attached to the lever B by a pin or bolt on which it turns freely.
H is a belt or band and is attached to one of the pawls D, between the handle Gr and pulley F, it is then passed around the pulley F then around the pulley E and attached to the same pawl D with a spring if a nonelastic band is used or without a spring if there is sufiicient elasticity in the band.
To use this winch the operator must take hold of the handle G, in the same manner that he would an ordinary winch or crank and turn either direction and if he holds the handle with sufficient firmness he will cause one of the pawls to catch which will allow him to exert his force upon the shaft. When the operator lets go the handle the pawl will leave the ratchet and the winch will hang down loose upon the shaft and there will be no danger from the winch if the shaft continues to revolve.
Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The means used to operate the pawls D and D substantially as above specified, also the ratchets C and C when used in combination with the devices above mentioned.
WILLIAM BIKER.
