An ob'ect of the invention is to provide a lipstic holder or container including a housing or casing having a longitudinallyl extending flute or bead providing a groove in the inner wall of the casing, a rotatable sleeve in the casing havin 'an operating head at one end of the casing and having a spiral slot in its wall, and a carrier for the lipstick within the sleeve and having a projection extendin into the oove w ereby rotatable movement of t. e sleeve moves the carrier longitudinally of the sleeveto project or withdraw the lipstick.

Another object is to provide a lipstick holder or container including a casing or housing, a sleeve rotatable in the casing or housing to project or retract a lipstick, and an improved means of attaching an operating head to the sleeve.

A further object is to provide a lipstick holder or container formed of sheet metal and consisting of a minimum number of parts each of which may be made by simple e manufacturing operations whereb the imroved holder or container may. e manuactured and sold at a relatively low price.

Other objectsand advantages -will become apparent from a-consideration of the lfollowing detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing through the slot and alone wherein the invention is shown. However,

Referring 1n detail to the drawing, the imroved lipstick holder includes an outer liousin or-casing 15.having an outwardly presse .annular bead 16 adjacent one of its ends. ,Thisbead 16 forms an annular groove in the inner surfaceI of the casing and the purpose of this groove will later appear. Acover orcap 17 is adapted to close one end of the casing and the bead forms a stop or limitin means which defines the extent to which t ecap 17 may be telescoped over the casing. Thecasing 15 has a plurality of vertically or longitudlnallyv extending and outwardly pressed flutes orbeads 18 which at their inner sides are hollow and provide grooves opening through the inner surface of the casing. It will be noted that the outwardly pressedbeads 18 form grooves which open through one end of the casing and that these beads and the correspond' grooves stop short of the other end of t e casing, ,the

beads being shown as stopping just short of the annular bead -16 to forma stop I8 to limit movement of the lipstick carrier as will be described later. While four beads 5 18 are shown in the drawing and as arranged at equally spaced points about the casing, it will become clear as the description proceeds that for the purpose of operation any one of the beads is suilicient and that more or less than the number shownmay be provided as is desired to suit the individual taste.

Within thecasing 15 is arranged arotatable sleeve 19 preferably split from end to end as at 2O whereby the sleeve may be provided or formed from a flat sheet rolled to shape or into the form of a tube. In its wall thetube 19 is provided with aspiral slot 21 ex,- tending or a considerableportion of the length of the tube as is clearly shown in Fig. 5. We are however not limited to a split sleeve as we may use a solid or continuous sleeve if desired. The split sleeve is preferred as the spiral groove can be stampedA in it when it is a flat piece and then it can be rolled to the tubular shape. Further, adjacent one end the tube -is provided with outwardly pressed annular or arcuate beads orbead 22 received in the groove at the inner side of thebead 16 of thecasing 15 when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1.

Sincesleeve 19 is split throughout its length it may be squeezed to bring the edge portions of itssplit 20 into close relation to enable the sleeve to be easily inserted int-o the housing orcasing 15. When released'in the housing, the sleeve will open to some extent whereby to bring thebead 22 into the groove at the inner side of thebead 16, andl whereby the sleeve will fit fairly snugly in the housing but be free for turning movement therein. Further, since thebead 22 isv engaged in the groove at the inner side of thebead 16 the sleeve and casing will be secured against casual relative longitudinal movement and are therefore for practical purposes or for the purpose of this invention secured together.

At its end opposite Ythe end portion having thebead 22,.thesleeve 19 is provided with an outwardly extendingflange 23 adapted 4to have ahead 24 secured thereto. When the sleeve is within the casing, thehead 24 is exposed at one end of the casing and is adapted to be gripped and o erated to rotate the sleeve in the casing. here shown, thehead 24 is an octagon having -eight flat sides, although it willbe understood that the head may be circular or may have any desired number of flat sides.

Head 24 includes a body portion `or bottom 25 and upstanding side walls orportions 26 notched at their upper edges as at 27 to provide a plurality of bendable lugs 5`ory fingers 28. If desired, a filler orpacking disc 29 may be provided at the inner side of the bottom or body 25 of theoperating head 24. In assembling the head on thesleeve 19, the parts are placed together with theflange 23 of the sleeve against the body 25 of the head or against thedisc 29, if one is used, and thefingers 28 are then bent over onto the u per surface of the flange as clearly shown -1n Fig. 9. Obviously, this structure securely fastens the head and flange together and when a flat sided head is used as shown at 24, the outer edges of theflange 23 may be treated to provide flat surfaces and the edges of thedisc 29 may be flattened 4whereby there will be nol turning movemenbbetween the head and sleeve.

Within thesleeve 19isla carrier 30 shown in detail in Figs. 7 and 8.' This carrier is a more or less cup like member and is adapted to receive one end of alipstick 34 and is ladapted to be operated or propelled to pro- .of course, been removed from the casing and the lipstickl will be exposed for use. The outward movement is limited by theprojection 32 engaging theend 18 of the groove orbead 18. This also prevents the projection running into theannular bend 16. When the sleeve is rotated in the opposite direction the lipstick will be withdrawn into the casing.

The projection included withthe carrier and above referred to is here shown as comprising alpin 31 of a length somewhat great er than the diameter of thecarrier 30 and having one end portion extending through a wall of the carrier to provide a projecting portion 32.`Pin 31 extends across the carrier and has its opposite end portion embedded in the wall of the carrier as at 33. Thus, it will be seen that the pin is rigidly connected with the carrier and is supported in a substantially horizontal position with one of its end portions projecting a sufficient amount to pass through theslot 21 in thesleeve 19 and into one of the grooves at the inner sidey of any one of the outwardly pressed longitudinally extendingbeads 18 on the carrier.

., In Fig. lthe carrier is shown as receiving the inner end portion of alipstick 34 and it will be seen that the pin orbar 31 passes ythrough the lipstick and anchors it in the carrier. The lipstick is inserted in the carrier and then thepin 31 is inserted to pass through the lipstick and carrier. In assembling the parts the carrier is first placed in the sleeve with theportion 32 of thepin 31 extending through theslot 21 in the sleeve. Then, as the sleeve is ressed into thecasing 15 should the pin disposed at the lower end of the slot the parts are turned into such relation that the lower end of one of thebeads 18 is in alignment with the projectingportion 32 of the pin and such portion will enter the groove at the innerl side of the bead as the parts are pushed together. Theoperating head 24 may be assembled on the sleeve prior to the insertion of the sleeve in the casing.

Figs. 11 and 12 show a slightly modified arrangement for attachin an operating head to a sleeve. In these gures the sleeve is designated 35 and is split throughout its length as indicated at 36. This sleeve will,

of course, be provided with a spiral slot similar to theslot 21 of thesleeve 19 and may be provided with beads similar tothebeads 22 of thesleeve 19. Adjacent itslower end sleeve 35 is provided with a plurality of spaced openings orperforations 37 three of which are here shown, one being shown at each side of thesplit 36 of the sleeve and the other being shown at the opposite side of the sleeve. These openings function in the mountin of an operating head on the sleeve or in t e securin of the sleeve and an opera-ting head toget er.

The operating head in Figs. 11 and 12 is designated 38 and may includeya body portion 39 closed at one end as at 40 and being knurled about its side walls as at 41 for the purpose of ornamentation and to provide a grip. A neck or attachingportion 42 extends upwardly from thehead 38 and is adapted to be receivedl in the lower end portion of thesleeve 35. Thisneck 42 may be notched in its upper ed e and has portions bent laterally there rom -at spaced points to providelugs 43 adapted to enter theopenings 37 in the sleeve. Thehead 38 is applied to the sleeve prior to the time the sleeve is inserted in thecasing 15 and may be applied after the sleeve is sli htly opened'. fter thelugs 43 are inserte into theopenings 37 in the tube the sleeve may be inserted into thecasing 15, and the diameter of the sleeve relative to the internal diameter of the casin is such that the casing will not permit t e sleeve-to open and the lugs will therefore be retained in theopenings 37 of the sleeve. This makes `a simple and eiective means for quickly attaching the head to the sleeve.

From the foregoing description taken in' i connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that the lipstick holder or container of the present invention is quite simple in construction and involves but a relaipiickly assembled and that different means ving the head to the rotating sleeve may be Further, it will be apparent used as desired. Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:

1. In a lipstick holder, in combination, an outer casing having an outwardly pressed bead extending longitudinall thereof to form a groove at the inner si e of the casing and extended to and through one end of the casing, a sleeve rotatable in said casing, said sleeve having a spiral slot through itsy wall and split longitudinally to permit it to expand and contract, a carrier in said sleeve, and a pro]ection on said carrier and 2. an outer casing having spaced outwardly pressed beads extending longitudinally thereof to form grooves at the inner sides of the casing, said casing having an outwardly pressed'y circular bead, a rotatable sleeve within the casing and split fromend to end, said sleeve having an outwardly pressed bead disposed in the circular bead of the casing to prevent casual separation of the sleeve and casing, an o erating head on one end of the sleeve an disposed beyond the casing, said sleeve having a spiral slot, a carrier within the sleeve, and a projection on the carrier and extending through the slot in the sleeve and into one of the longitudinal grooves in the casing whereby on relative rotation of the sleeve and casing the carrier will be moved longitudinally of the casin l v 3. In a lipstick holder, in combination, an outercasing having an outwardly pressed bead extending longitudinally of the casing` to form a groove at the inner side of the 'casing and extending from one end thereof e and stopping short of the other end; thereof,

' aprojection on the carrier and extending through the slot in the sleeve and into the groove in the casing whereby on relative turning movement of the sleeve and casing the'carrier will be moved longitudinally of the casing.

4. In a lipstick holder, in combination, an outer casing having-a longitudinally extending bead forming a groove opening through the inner surface of the casing, said casing having an outwardly pressed circular bead at one end of the longitudinally extending bead, a sleeve rotatable within the casing and split from end to end, said, sleeve having an outwardly pressed bead disposed in the bead of the-caslng to prevent casual separation of the sleeve and casing, an operating head on one end of the sleeve, said sleeve having a spiral slot, a carrier within the sleeve, and a projection on the carrier and extending through the slot in the sleeve and into the longitudinal groove in the casing, whereby rotation of the sleeve in the casing will result in movement of the carrier longitudinally of the casing.

5. In a lipstick container, in combination, an outer casing, a sleeve rotatable in the casing, said sleeve having a iiange at one end, a carrier in the sleeve; means whereby the carrier is moved longitudinally of the sleeve on relative turning movement between the sleeve and casing, and an operating head on the flanged end of theV sleeve, said head includin a body portion to receive the flanged end ofg the sleeve and having upwardly extending walls bent over the flange of the sleeve whereby to secure the head to the sleeve.

6. In a lipstick container, in combination,

an outer casing, a sleeve rotatable in the casing, said sleeve split from end to end and having openings in its wall adjacent'one of its ends, an operating head on the sleeve end having the openings, said head including a portion disposed in the end of the sleeve and having lugs arranged `in the openings in the sleeve whereby the sleeve and head will rotate as a unit, and said sleeve adapted to have the edge portions of its split maintained in close relation to maintain the sleeve closed by engagement of the outer surface of the sleeve with the inner surface of the casing whereby to retain the head on the sleeve.

7 In a lipstick holder, in combination, an outer casing having an outwardly pressed bead extending longitudinally thereof to form a groove at the inner side of the casing, a rotatable sleeve within the casing and split from end to end, said sleeve having an separation of the sleeve and casing, an operating head on the other end of the sleeve and disposed beyond the casing, said sleeve having a spiral slot, a carrier within the sleeve,`said groove in the casing extending to and through the end of the casing opposite to said shoulders, and a projection on the carrier extending through the slotin the sleeve and into the longitudinal groove in the casing whereby on relative rotation of the sleeve and casing the carrier will be moved longitudinally of the casing.

8. In a lipstick holder, in combination, an outer casing having an outwardly pressed bead extending longitudinally thereof to and through one end of the casing to forma groove at the inner side of the casing, a rotatable sleeve within the casing and split from end to end, said sleeve' and said casing having cooperating shoulders to prevent casi ual longitudinal separation of the sleeve and casing, an.operating head on one end of the sleeve and disposed beyond the casing, said sleeve having a spiral slot, a carrier within the sleeve, and a projection on the carrier extending through the slot in the sleeve and into the longitudinal groove in vthe casing whereby on relative rotation of the sleeve and casing the carrier will be moved longitudinally of the casing.
