IMPROVEMENT IN RECORDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,271, dated December 12, 1876; application filed November 18, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NICHOLAS VAN Rees, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bar-Room Register, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device to be used by a bar-tender to register his sales as they are made, so that the proprietor can know by examining the register how much money there should be in the drawer, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.

The invention consists in the combination of the two reels, the guide, the gong, the spring-hammer, the slide, the spring, the two pawls, and the ratchet-wheel with each other and with the case, as hereinafter fully described.

A is the case or box, in which the apparatus is placed, and the upper partB of which is loose, and is hinged, at its rear end, to the lower part A, so that it may be turned back to give convenient access to the interior of the said lower part A. In the lower part A, near its ends, are pivoted two reels, 0 D, upon one, C, of which is wound a roll ot'paper, E, which, as the machine is used, is wound upon the other reel 1), the said paper, in its passage from the one reel to the other, passing over a semicircular guide, F, secured to the case A. To the case A, in the cavity of the guide F, is at tached a gong, G, against which the paper E is punctured or marked by the hammer H, the gong G at the same time being sounded. The handle of the hammer H is pivoted to the upper part A, and is provided with a spring, I, by which the hammer H, when released, is thrown down against the gong Gr. The handle of the hammer H passes up through a slot in the slide J, so that the said hammer H may be raised by drawing the slide J forward. The slide J is drawn forward by a knob, K, the stem of which passes in through. the front of the upper part B of the case, and the said slide is thrown back, when the knob K is released by a spiral spring, L, coiled around the stem of the said knob. As shown in the drawing, the hammer is thrown by the backward movement of the slide J when the knob K is released; but it may be provided with a tripping device to release it without releasing the said slide. To the slide J is attached a pawl, M, which engages with the teeth of a ratchetwheel, N, formed upon or attached to the reel D, so that the forward movement of the slide J may turn the reel D, to wind the paper E upon it. The reel D is kept from being turned back by the friction of the pawl M, when the slideJ moves back, by a pawl, 0, attached to the case A, or to a support attached to said case.

As many of the devices are used as there are different-priced articles sold, and each price is marked upon one of the knobs K. Then, as each sale is effected, the bar-tender pulls upon the proper knob, and the sale is registered upon the paper E.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the two reels 0 D, the guide F, the gong G, the spring-hammer H l, the slide J, the spring L, the two pawls M O, and the ratchet-wheel N with each other and with the case A B, substantially as herein shown and described.
