This inventionI relates to car roofs of the pressed-steel type wherein the margins of the metal roof sheets are shapedvand riveted together to form hollow sea-ins that 'function as carlines. j
One of the principal objects of the'present invention is tofdevise means for increasing the strength and rigidity of the hollow roof seams and forsuspending an insulating lining therefrom. Another object is to provide for detachably securing the seam strengthening and stiffening means withinthe hollow seams. Other objects are simplicity and cheapness of construction and coiiipactiiess of design.
`.i5 Theinvcntion consists principally in stiliening and strengthening the hollow seams or ribs of the roof by means of wooden iillers; it also consists in suspending an insulating lining from saidiillers; it also consists in detachablyl securing said fillers within the seams independently of the securing rivets therefor; and it also consists inthe parts and arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed. Themetal roof sheets 2 are arrangedcifoss-\vise of thecar, extending from eaves to. eaves with their eaves ends supported on and secured by riv-ets 3 to the out# standing flanges of eaves stiffening angles Vt whose depending iianges are riveted or otherwise rigidly secured flatwise to the outer faces of the webs ofthe side platesl. Theroof sheets 2 slope downwardly from the ridge to the eaves where they are'turned down over theeaves angles 4 to form drip flanges 5. The roof sheets are provided along their adjacent side margins with hollowupstanding ribs 6 that fit one over the other and have fiat tops that are rigidly secured together iatwise by rows of rivets 6a, thereby forming raised hollow seams, which function as roof supporting carlines as well as weatherprooi'ing joints.` As shown in the drawings, the hollow roof seams or ribs di minish in depth toward the eaves of the car Where they are curveddownwardly and merge into the body of the sheets adjacentto the drip vflanges 5 at the eaves ends thereof.
Running boards 7 extend longitudinally of the car at the ridge `and are preferably supported on and rigidly secured to the top lianges of Z-shapedruiming board saddles 8 whos'ebottom flanges are supported on and rigidly secured to the flat tops of the roof seams by the securing rivets 6a therefor.
`'Located vwithin each hollow seam of the roof is a wooden liller strip I9 which extends substantially from end to end of said seam and thus serves as avstiftenerto increase the strength and rigidity thereof. Said stiii'ener also serves .asV a means for attaching aninsulatinglining 10 to the underside of the roof. Theinsulating lining 10 is preferably secured to thef bottom of each filler by means ofnails 11. Fig. 8 is a side view of another modified The lillers) are detachably secured within the hollow ribs or seams of the roof by means of carriage boltsl2 that are suspended from straps or clipsl located inside said ribs `or seams and secured to the top walls thereof by thesecuring rivets 6 therefor. Thesebolt holder clips 13 preferably comprise metal straps that extend lengthwise of the seams adjacent to the ridge and eaves with their ends riveted iatwise to the underside of said seams. The straps are perforated'intermediate their ends to receive thebolts 12, and have their perforated portions oifset downwardly, as at 13e, to accommodate the heads ofsaid bolts. The upper surfaces of thefillers 9 are notched or gained, as at 14, cross-wise to accommodate the bolt holders and also have` bolt holes extending therethrough from top to bottom thereof that are enlarged at their lower ends to accommodate thenuts 15 for the bolts.
In the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the liller 9a is made in two pieces that are disposed in abutting relation at the ridge and are connected together so asfto act after vthe manner of a beam by means of ametal plate 16 that fits in slots in the adjacent ends of the two pieces and is secured thereto bybolts 17.
In the modification shown in F ig. 8, thc filler 9b is made in two pieces that are not connected at the ridge line but merely abut at this point and thus operate to strengthen the roof seam through the compressionV of their abutting surfaces.
By the arrangement described, the fillers serve to strengthen and stiifen the hollow seams and thereby increase the load capacity at the roof. rIhe fillers also serve as nailing strips for the insulating lining which can be quickly and easily applied to thevroof; and they may be quickly and easily mounted in the hollow seams and readily removed and replaced without disturbing or loosening-the securing rivets therefor.
What I claim is:
1. A car roof comprising roof sheets eX- tending` from side to side of the car and having their side marginal portions shaped and riveted directly together to function as hollow carlines, filler members for said carlines, and means for detachably securing said filler members in said carlines, said means comprisingmembers permanently secured to said seams by the securing rivets for the cooperating side marginal portions of said roof sheets and members supported. by said permanently secured members and detachably engaging said filler members.
2. A car roof comprising roof sheets eX- tending from side to side of the car and having their side marginal portions formed into hollow ribs that are lapped and rigidly secured directly together at their tops to form 4hollow scams, filler members for said seams1 and means for detachably securing said filler members in said seams without disturbing the securing means for said Yhollow ribs.
3. A car roof comprising roof sheets eX- tending fromside to side of the'car and having their side vmarginal portions formed into hollow ribs that are lapped and rigidly secured together to form seams, filler members for said seams, means for detachably securing said filler members in said seams without disturbing the securing means for said hollow ribs, and aninsulatingl lining located beneath said roof-and secured to said filler members.
4. A car roof comprising roof sheetshaving hollow ribs therein extending from side to side ofthe car, filler members for said ribs, and means for detachably securing said filler members in said ribs, said means comprising straps permanently secured to the tops of said ribs, and bolts supported by said straps.
5. A carroof comprising roof sheets extending from side to side of the car and having their side marginal portions shapedand riveted together to form hollow seams, filler members for said seams, and means for detachably securing said liller members` in said seams, said means comprising bolt holders permanently,secured in said seams by thesecuring rivets therefor, and bolts carried by said bolt holders.
6. A car -roof comprisingroof sheets extending from Side to side of the car and having their side marginal portions shaped and riveted together to form hollow seams, filler members for said scams, and means'for detachably securing said filler members in said seams, said means comprising metal straps disposed in said seams with their ends permanently secured to the top walls thereof and `having the `portion intermediate rtheir ends perforated and offset downwardly, and bolts extending` through the perforations of said straps with their heads supported on the downwardly offset portion thereof.
7. A car roof comprising roof sheets eX- tending from side to side of the car Vand having their side marginal portions shaped and riveted together to form hollow seams, lillers for said seams, each of said fillers comprising two wooden strips disposed one ou each side of the ridge, a metal plate overlapping the adjacent ridge ends of said strips, bolts for securing said plate tov said strips, straps located in said seams with their ends secured thereto by the securing rivets therefor, and bolts depending 'from said Vstraps and engaging said filler strips.
