Description

Nov. 4,. 1930. J. BUCHMANN 1,780,221
' BRUSH med May s, 1930 2 sheets-sheet 1 Qwumwoz S51# MLQAQSMW,
Patented Nov. 4, Y 1930 PATENT oFFicE JOHN BUGHMANN, OF IIAMILTON, OHIO BRUSH YApplication filed May 8, 1930. Serial No. 450,790.
This invention relates to brushes and has particular relation to those brushes having tufts of bristles which. can be readily replaced when they become worn or broken.
In the construction of brushes having tufts which may be replaced, it is necessary to so construct the parts that when a new set of tufts is being placed, it will notbe diliicult to assemble the parts in their proper places.
The primary objectv of this invention is the provision of an improved brush having bristle tufts which may be readily replacedl when the bristles become broken or worn.
"l5 Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved brush wherein the bristles are held in place by a securing means covering a plurality of rows of bristle tufts.
Another and still further object of the invention is to provide a brush having bristle tufts which maybe separately replaced, the bristles being held in place between two plate members. Y
Another and still further object ofthe in# vention is to provide a brush having bristle tufts with holders having flanges which are held between two plate members, thereby holding the bristletufts in proper position relative to eachother.
Other and further objects rwill be apparent lto those skilled inthe art from a reading of the complete specification 'andclaims Referring to the drawing wherein I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention as applied to a coating brush for use in paper manufacture,
Figure 1 is a cross section of my invention taken as indicated'by theline 1`-1 of Figure 4. y
Figure 2 is a viewV of the parts of Figure 1, but showing the members separated vand in position to be assembled.
Figure 3 is a detail view showing a modified construction wherein no opening in the back member is necessary, the tuft'holding ferrule being received bythe securing plate member. l
Figure 4 isa plan view of the vholding member through which the bristles extend. Figure 5 is a side view of my-invention.
AThroughout the specification and claims the same reference characters refer to the same or similar parts.
Referring particularly to Figures 1 and 2, thenumeral 10 designates the main body 55 or back member of. the illustrated brush made according to 'my invention. In thismember 10, I provide openings 11 into which the tuft holding ferrules 12are located when in operative position. The tuft holding fer rules'12 are provided with outward extending'means as theflanges 12a. The bristle tufts-@.13 are inserted in thetuft holders 12 .and'aresecured in any suitable or well known manner. l
The construction of the tuft itself may be in accordance with any suitable or well known practice; rlhe tufts of hair or bristles may be held together by setting the ends in cement or pitch or vulcanized inV rubber. The tuft may be set or cemented in theferrule 12, the latter being made of-tin, brass, iron, steel, aluminum or other metal or the ferrule may be made of vulcanized rubber, holding the bristles or hairsfdirectly, .the flanges being integral therewith. Y r
' Securingfmeans 14 is provided to hold the tufts in place against theback member 10. In the embodiment illustrated thesecuring y means 14 is constructed as a flat plate. Open- Seings 15 are provided through which the tufts of bristles or hairs pass. rhe back 10 and the Imember 14 are secured together inany suit- Y able or well known manner as by thebolts 16. When assembled, the bodies of the ferrules12 are in thev openingsll and the fianges 12'r1 are held between the adjacent faces of theback 10 and the holding means 14.
In the modified form shown in Figure 3, the flanges 112a areat the outer end of the 90 ferrule tuft holding means 112 which holds the hairs orbristles 113. The flange 112a is held in placebetween adjacent faces of the back member andthe holdingmeans 114.
In this construction, theV openings 115 are large enough to accommodate the body of the ferrule tuft holding means 112.
' In this construction attention is called toV the fact that the necessity of making the holes as at 11 is avoided and it is not as important to operation that exactitude in the location of the openings 115, be observed. In the embodiment illustrated in Figures l and 2, it is necessary to have the axes ot corresponding roles and openings substantially coincident with each other.
The parts lO, 14, 110, 114 may be made of any suitable metal or Wood or of compositions such as balrelite, hard rubber, Celluloid, `formica, etc. Since each tutt and its holder separate, much warping, shrinkingand expansion or contraction may take place Witl1- ont destroying the ei'licient operation.
l'hiie I have shown and described embodienents ef my invention in detail', I Vdesire to have it understood that the disclosure is merely illustrative and that modifications and changes may be made Withoutvdeparting from the spirit of the invention and Within the -`cope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire tosecure byLetters Patent 1. A brush construction comprising reglaceable bristle tufts, a back member, a tutt holder on the end of each tutt, Hang-es on the tutt holders, a member secured to the back member and in position to hold the flanges in place relative to the back member, the second member being Qrovided With openings to permit the passage of the'bristles.
2. A- brush construction lcomprising replaceable bristle tufts, a back member, a tutt l older on the end or" each tutt, flanges on the it holders,` a member secured to the back member and having'openings to receive the tutt holders when in place, the flanges being held between the two members Whenthe parts are in place.
l3. Ak brush construction `comprising replaceable bristle tufts, a back member, a tutt holder on the end orn each tutt, flanges on the tutt holders, a member secured to the back iember and having openings from Which the l ristles extend, the back member having openings to receive the tutt holders, the flanges being held between the tivo ymembers when the parts are in place. Y
.f In testimony whereof I hereunto aHiX my signature.
' JOHNl BUCI-IMANN.
