Aug 13, 1929- c. D. BoNsALL 1,724,745
GAR ROOFl Filed July l, 1927 /NVENTo Patented Aug. 13, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES DAVID BONSALL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 P. H.
MURPHY COMPANY, 0F NEW KENSINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR ROOF.
Application filedJ'uly 1,
My invention relates principally to improvement in metal car roofs of the allsteel flexible type wherein metal roof sheets extend from eaves to eaves of the car between carlines and are loosely connected along their adjacent margins by weatherproofing seam covers that are rigidly secured 4to said cai-lines and thus serve to hold roof sheets in position on the car.
The principal object of the presentanvention is to provide simple and efiicient means for securing the seam covers to the carlines. Other objects are cheapness of construction and repair, fewness of parts and ease of assembly. The invention consists of the parts and in the combinationshand arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like numerals refer to like parts wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a vertical cross-section through the eaves portion of the car roof embodying my invention, and
F ig. 2 is a cross-section through the seam on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown in connection with a car roof having roof substructure comprisingwooden side plates 3 connected bymetal carlines 4, preferably of substantially inverted T-shaped cross-section and are provided with depending end fianges 5 as shown in the drawings. Side sheathing boards 6 are secured to the outer face of each side plate and terminate below the upper edge thereof. The ends of the inverted T-shaped' carlines are preferably seated in transverse grooves 7 provided therefor in the tops of the side plates, and the outstanding base flanges and depending end fianges of said carliiies are secured to said side plates by vertical andhorizontal bolts 8 and 9, respectively. Eaves flashingstrips 10 extend longitudinally of the car at the eaves and aie shaped and arranged to cover the upper end of the side sheathing and the upper corner of the side plates. As shown in the drawing the fiashing is secured in place by the horizontal securingbolt 9 for the depending end flanges of the carlines.
Roof sheets 11 extend from eaves to eaves of the car between carlines with their end por- 1927. Serial N0. 202,769.
tions movably supported on the tops of side plates. The roof sheets are preferably provided with upwardly offset sidemarginal portions 12 that are inclined upwardly and terminate in upstanding side marginal seam fia-nges 13 that extend from end to end of said sheets. The roof sheets are also provided at their eaves ends with dependingflanges 14 which overhang the outer corners of the side plates and terminate in inturned portions that are normally spaced far enough away from the side plates to permit the sheets to accommodate themselves to distortions of the car frame by sluing thereon.
Veatherproofing members in the form of inverted cliannel-shaped seam covers 15 straddle adjacent upstanding sidemarginal fianges 13 of the roof sheets and are rovided at the lower edges of their side walls withoutstanding base flanges 16 which rest flatwise on the sloping side marginal portions ofadjacent sheets 12. The seam covers are of sufficient Width to permit play of said flanges therebeneath, and the depth of said seam covers is sufficient to leave a space between the tops thereof and the tops of the carlines. At their eaves ends, theseam caps 15 are provided with dependingend flanges 17 which cover the space between the corners of adjacent sheets and terminate in inturned end port-ions which extend beneath the inturned portions of the dependingeaves flanges 14 of said sheets. The dependingend flanges 17 of the seam covers 15 serve to limit outward sliding movement of the sheets and are normally spaced far enough away from the depending eaves flanges of said sheets to permit play thereof.
The seam covers are rigidly secured to the carlines, preferably at a point adjacent to the eaves of the car by means of a double or inverted U-shapedstrap bolt 18. As shown in the drawing, t-he web of the strap bolt is permanently secured to the underside of the seam cover in direct contact therewith, preferably by means of arivet 19, and the branches of said bolt positioned one on each side of the upstanding web of the inverted T-shaped carline. The lower ends of the two branches of the double strap bolt terminate in cylindrical portions that extend through openings or holes provided therefor in the lateral base fianges of the carline and are threaded to receivenuts 20. The strap bolt is also provided with a nut lock comprising a perforated strip of metal 2l, which is sleeved on the threaded ends of the depending branches of said strap bolt between thesecuring nuts 20 and the bottom of the carline and is provided with end projections ortabs 22 adapted to be sent down against the sides of the nuts.
The advantages of the above arrangement are its simplicity and cheapness of construction and ewness ot' parts and the ease with which the seam covers may be assembled on the car.
lVhat I cla-iin is:
1. A car roof comprising side plates connected by carlines and roof sheets spanning the car from side plate to side plate between ,cai-lines, seam covers connecting the adjacent marginal portions of said sheets,v and means for securing said seam covers in position, said means comprising strap bolts rigidly secured to said seam covers in direct contact therewith and removably engaging said carlines.
2. A car roof comprising side plates connected by carlines andvroof sheets spanning the car from side plate to side plate between carlines, seam covers loosely connecting the adjacent marginal portions of said sheets7 and means for securing said seam covers in position, said means comprising double strap bolts arranged with the webs thereof directly contacting with and rigidly secured to said seam covers and with the branches thereof removably engaging saidy carlines.
3. A car roof comprising side plates connected by carlines and roof sheets spanning the car from side plate to side plate between carlines, seam covers loosely connecting the adjacent marginal portions of saidvsheets7 and means for securing said seam covers in position7 said means comprising inverted U- shaped st-rap bolts permanently secured to the seam covers with the webs of said bolts in direct contact with the underside of the seam covers and with the branches or' said bolts removably engaging said carlines.
Signed at New Kensington, Pa., this 27th day of June, 1927.
