ROCKER ARE FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION-ENGINE VALVES.

The present invention is directed to improvements in rocker arms for internal combustion engine valves.
The primary object of the invention 1s to provide a device of this character so constructed that noise and vibration incident to the operation thereof will be elimlnated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind wherein the clearance between the arms is reduced to a minimum in order that the objectionable tapping occasioned by contact of the arms will. be eliminated, thereby providing a rocker arm which is practically noiseless in operation.
With these and other objects in View, th1s invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.

Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of another modified form of the invention.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view 3o therethrough.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designatesa pin upon which is pivotally supported the rocker arm designated as a whole by thenumeral 2, said arm consisting of upper and lower arms 3 and 4, the outer ends of which are pivotally connected to thepin 1. The arm 3 is formed with a web 5 havinga beveled lower face 6 which is adapted to contact with the beveled face 7 formed on the arm 4 when the engine is in motion. The arm 4 is further provided with side flanges 8 and between which is rotatably mounted aroller 9.'for coaction with thecam 10 of thecam shaft 11. The arm 3 is provided with ashoe 12 adapted to engage the valve stem tappet 13 of conventional type. The arms 3 and 4 are provided withrecesses 14 and 15 for engagement with the opposite terminals of thecoilspring 16, said spring servingto move the arms apart as 1927. Serial No. 189,360.

It will be obvious that as thecam 10 engages theroller 9 thespring 16 will be slight- 1y compressed before the beveled face 6 and face 7 contact, thus preventing noise as thearm 12 exerts a thrust upon the arm 3 to cause theshoe 12 to actuate thestem 13.
In Figure 4, the rocker arm 17 comprises a pair of upper andlower arms 18 and 19, but in lieu of a coil spring a leaf spring 20 is employed and has one end fixed, as at 21, to the outer end of thearm 19, the other end thereof being slidable upon said arm. Thearm 19 is further provided with abeveled face 22 which coacts with thebeveled face 23 of the web 24 of the arm 18. Thearm 19 is provided with a. lug 24' which coacts with the cam 25 of thecam shaft 26. 1
In Figures 5 .and 6, another modified form of the invention, the rocker arm 27 consists of upper andlower arms 28 and 29, the respective arms having beveledfaces 30 and 31, there being a recess 32 in'thearm 29 for the I reception of a rubber bumper 32 for absorbing shock and preventing noise when the faces approach each other. Thearm 29 is formed with a downwardlyinclined extension 34 provided with arecess 35, in which rests the lower end of thecoil spring 36, the
upper end of which seats in the recess 37 formed in thearm 28. Thearm 29 is further provided with alug 38 which coacts with thecam 39.
The operation of the modified forms of the invention are substantially the same as that of the preferred form, therefore a detailed description therefor is not thought necessary since the construction and operation will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
