Description

C. H.-YOUNG RECEPTACLE Filed sept. 5o, 1926 Patented Aug. 28, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RECEPTACLE.
Application led September 30, 1926: Serial No. 138,665.
My invention relates to receptacles such as boxes or baskets, and will be best understood from the following description when read in the light of the accompanying drawing of an example of the invention, while the scope of the invention will be more par-Y' ticularly pointed ont in the appended claims.
In the drawing Fig. 1 isa perspective view of a receptacle constructed according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section in a vert-ical plane containing the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and A Fig. 3 is a perspective of three receptacles according to Fig. 1 in stacked or nested relation.
Referring to the drawing I have shown a receptacle which preferably comprises the sheet metal sides 1 andends 3, the ends being bent to form flanges 5 overlapping the sides 1 and riveted thereto by rivets 7. At their lower edges the sides and bottoms of the receptacle are bent to form flanges 9 upon.
which rests the bottom 11 of the receptacle secured to the flanges by rivets 13.
As illustrated, II have shown a Z-iron 5 bent to extend around the upper edges of the end and side walls of the receptacle, these Walls conveniently being bent to formflanges 17 which are secured to thehorizontal web 19 of the Z-iron byrivets 21, while the lowervertical flanges 23 are secured to the side and end walls byrivets 25.
At the bottom of the side walls 3 I 'have illustratedflat metal bars 27 which project beyond the sides of the receptacle and are secured to the bottom of the receptacle by the counter-sunk rivets 13, the bars conveniently having theupturned portions 29 riveted to the end walls at 31.
Thebars 27, which among other things act to protect the adjacent parts of the receptacle,' form a convenient runner for adapting the receptacle to he slid along a loonor other support, or contact with the rollers of a gravity conveyer, and are also adapted to rest upon the horizontal webs of the Z-iron at the top of a similar receptacle. The parts are so proportioned thatthe distance between the outer edges of thebars 27 is approximately that between the inner sides of uppervertical flanges 33 of the portions of the Z-iron at opposite sides of the receptacle so that when similar receptacles are nested or stacked asillustrated by Fig. 3 the eo-acting bars 27 and Z-irens will hold the receptacles in aligned relation.
Although I have described for purposes of illustration one example of my invention itwill be understood that within the scope of my invention wide deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the 'spiritof my invention.
Claims- 1. A metal receptacle having a flat has and vertical sides, said receptacle at opposite bottom edges thereof' having lrunners each formed of a flat barext-ending along and beneath the bottom of the receptacle with portions project-ing laterally beyond said edges, said receptacle at the edges thereof above said bars having a reinforcing rim comprising a Z-bar, the web ofwhieh Z-bar is placed horizontally and projects laterally lin beyond the side walls of'said receptacle over thelaterally projecting portions of said runners. one flange of said Z-bar extending upwardly to form a marginalwall about the` outer edge of said web beyond verticalplanes including the outer edges of said runners, the other flange of Said Z-bar extending downwardly in overlapping relation to the vertical walls of said receptacle, to which flange said walls are secured.
2. A metal receptacle having a flat base andwertical sides, said receptacle at opposite bottom edges thereof having runners each formed of a flat bar extending ralong and beneath the bottom of the receptacle with portions projecting laterally beyond said edges, said hars at the ends thereof being bent upwardly to form corner protecting portions for the bottom of said receptacle, said receptacle at the upper edges thereof being formed with a laterally projeeting reinforcing rim comprising a lat-erally projecting flange and an upwardly pro` jecting wall at the outer margin of said flange, the runners of a like receptacle being adapted to rest upon said laterally projecting flange of said reinforcing rim between opposite portions of said upwardly projecting wall.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specication.
` CLARENCE H. YOUNG.
