UNITE FREDERICK C. MUR/NAN, OF BRNCEVILLE, LLINOS.
ADJUSTABLE Application filed March 8,19%. .Serial Tio. fe'
The invention relates to an adjustable cap.
The object of .the presentinvention is lto provide a simple., practical comparativelv inexoensive avd-'ustable can ot stylish .f i i and attractive appearance adapted tobe adjusted and varied in size troni say six and three-'fourths :to seven and one-halt, without 'the employment of .rubber and without altering the style and s1 pe oi' the cap so that it Avvill 4present the saine appearance when adg j ustetl to any within its range of adjustmentland altord an .easy and corn-tort able titin eachsifze.
'It is also an object ot the invention to provide an adjustable cap which will render 4Vit unnecessary that every size and every pattern be kept in Astock and will enable a customer after selecting a cap tot' a particular pattern to be fitted .perfectly with the selected vcap irrespective ot the size of the head of the customer'.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide an adjustable cap in which every elenient oi" the cap will be adiustable through the naturaltlexi'bility or elasticity of the tabries and to arrange the fabrics so that they Vmay be crowded together to an increased density in adjusting the cap to smaller sizes and expanded in making the larger adjustments.
lt is also an object oi the invention to arrange the adjusting; means that `they will be concealedlinoin view and not in any way interfere with the perfect tit ot the cap and the comfort ot lthe wearer.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists i-n the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter 'Fully described, illustrated in the accompanying dra-.wings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that 'various changes in the torni7 proportion and minor details ot construction, within the scope ot the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any ot' the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view ot an adjustable cap constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the sections cut on a bias.
Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view ot the same.v
larger than the inter-moei view through the liront portion of the adpistable cap.
Fig'. d is a hoi ZoutelV sectional. View ot a lportion oi' the cap.
F 5 an enlarged detail vertical lsectional view of a portion ot the cap. i
Fig. 6 is a `detail perspective view of a portion of the pocket ineinber,-the stiten'ing member and drawing string.
Fie. 71s a detai. perspective viewer? the a sectional lview or" the same i-lthe manner of engaging and Yholdlus rating the `coiroected portions of the size ad member.
n the accompanying `drawing in `which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention l designates the body of the adjustable cap compo-sedotsegmental sections 2 or cloth or other suitable woven fabric and e vl sections whichare stitched together their' sideedes at 8 are cut-on a bias as y ,indicated .in vFig. l .of theidrawings to vide an elastic or extensible body l .pted vto be varied in [sizeto enable the cap te be made into any size from six `and threetourths to seven and one-halt' but Warious other-ranges et lsizes, may be provided for asvrill be readily understood. In practo` a size slightly Y tice the cap will be out y te or middle size oit the e Y e `es and the-.elasti A; ot the mate rial will enable it to be readily veilipanclled to'the larger sizes and at the saine time at ,tord a comfortable-,easy tit such as cannot be aiiorded by ,a cap having rubber or similar elastic material `'for atording an adjustment to tit the heads ot different sizes. `In `the raking ot the cap into a smaller size the fabric is crowded together ato a greater density than its normal condition and' this may be readily done without affecting the style appearance and fit of the cap.
Thesections 2 may be of any desired number and they arepret'erably sector shaped as shown and they :torni a. `substantially circular body and the marginalperipheral portion 4 is folded upward within the cap and is adapted to be unfolded and arranged in convenient position for attaching a stiening` strip 5 and a pocket ineinber 6 to the marginal portion t so as to be arranged in the space between the saine and the body portion of the cap when the said marginal susk uurA

Y pocket member at the upper portions of the ya strip out on abias and folded along itsV longitudinal center to provide two `sides 7V and 8 and a connecting bottom portion.,r In
applying the stiffeningt strip and the pocket member to the marginal inturnedportion 4 the stiffening strip and the side 7 of the pocket member stitched Vat 9 a short distance from the lower edge of the stiifening strip and the two sides 7 and 8 of the pocket member are then'stitched together and to the stiifening 'strip and the marginal inturnedportion 4 at 10 approximately mid way between the upper` and lower edges of the stiffening strip and the pocket member. The stitches at S and 10 are designed to be 'suiiiciently loose in character so as not to interfere with the adjustment of the cap.
. The size ad'ustin'e'member 11 which is arranged within the pocket 12A of the pocket member is located at the lower' edgeof the cap and it may consist of a braided strip and the ends are brought together and extend through anopening 13 vat the center of thev front of the cap and are secured'together by aslidable catch 14 consisting of a sleeve constructed of suitable metal and provided at one end with spaced projecting angularly bent prongs 15 forming claws and adapted to be embedded in the sizefadjusting strip as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8 of the draw- The stitchingv of the sides of the sides forms thepocket 12 at the bottom, as clearly illustrated in F ig. 5 of thek drawings. This will enable the size to be readily adjusted and the fastening means is located at the front over thevisor 16 and is out of the Yway and does not in any way interfere with the comfort of the wearer of the cap. Also variousother means may be employed for' securing the ends of the size adjusting memm ber together to hold the cap in its various adjustments.V n
The cap is also provided with a lining consisting of a central circular portion 17 and amarginal strip 18 which is cut on a bias and which is attached to the inturnedmarginal portion 4 of the body ofthe cap. The
cap is provided at the front with aleather sweat band 19 of substantially the length of the visor and terminating atthe ends thereof so as not to interfere with the adjustment of the body of the cap. The stilfening strip 5 terminates at opposite sides of the center of the front as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing'. The lining7 the body and all the fabric members of the cap are out on the biasvand they cooperate with the adjusting member in eifecting an adjustment of the cap to suit the size of the head of aperson. The cap may be adjusted to any size within its range of adjustment and it is retained in suchv adjustment by securing the end portions of the adjusting strip yand the cap will have a comfortable easy iit in each adjustment and willnot bind the head and* as is often the case where elastic members are incorporated in' a cap for effecting an adjustment thereof.
lvVhat is claimed is:
in adjustable cap comprising a crown portion and side walls, a strip at the lower edG'e of the side walls bent backward upon itself and having its upper free ends secured together to form a pocket at the lower edge of the side walls, a stiffening strip coextencause headaches soV sive with the pocket forming strip` whenA folded,` secured to one of the side walls of said pocket, the lower edge of the side walls of the cap being turned inwardly and then directed upwardly coeXtensive with the pocket forming and stifienino' strips to completely enclose the pocket forming and stiffening strips and being secured thereto above the pocket, and an adjustable band within the pocket whereby the size of the cap may be varied.
In testimony whereof my hand.
I have hereunto set FREDERICK o; MURNAN
