WILLIAM IOBB, 0F CHEYIOT, OHIO.
sncTIoNAL BIN.
Application filed October 9, 1924. Serial No. 742,803.
My invention relates to sectional bins particularly, though not exclusively, adapted for use in garages and other places for storing various articles in separate compartments.
Heretofore bins, having separate compartments, have consisted of a structure having the partitions fixed to its frame having a width suliicient to accommodate the'desired number of compartments arranged in horizontal alinement, and having a predetermined hei ht usually equal to the distance from the goor to the ceiling of the room in which they are positioned. It very often happens, when it is desired to move a usual bin from one lace to another, such removal is impossible without remodeling the bin, at considerable expense and delay, for the purpose of alterin its dimensions to conform to the size of t e space it is to occupy or to permit its removal through doorways. Furthermore, the excessive weight of a usual bin, built in one section and which is filled with stored articles, makes it necessary to remove the articles therefrom, at considerable inconvenience, before the bin can be readily moved from place to place.
The objects of my invention are to provide a simple, practical durable and hi hly t in sections and each section having a structure capable of being quickly and conveniently assembled with or disassembled from other similar sections, whereby the various sections of the bin can be removed from place to place without removing its contents and irrespectiveof the size of the space the bin is to occupy; to provide means adapted to lock said sections securely together, where' by two or more assembled sections appear as a single unit; to provide a sectional bin having a construction particularly adapted to withstand rough usage.
My invention consists in providing a bin consisting of a pluralit of sections each having a frame containing a plurality of compartments and the bottom of each of said frames adapted to slidably receive the top of any other section, whereby as many sections as desired may be united as one unit; and in providing simple and effective releasable locking means' adapted to secure said sections in engagement with one another.
My invention further consists in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction, as herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a perspective showing two sections of my invention in assembled position; Fig. 2 1s a bottom view of one section of my invention; v

In the preferred construction of m 1nvention I provide bin 1 consisting ofy sections oryreceptacles 2 and 2comprisin sides 3 and 4, top 5, bottom 6,back 7 anopen front 8. Each section is divided into a plurality of compartments 9 by horizontal artition ll0 andvertical partitions 11 an 11. The horizontal partition is fixed in position by its upturnedend ed es 12, upturnedback edge 13, and u turnedront edge 14, respectively, being xed tosides 3 and 4,back 7 and inturned front edges 15, respectivelyfof the sides. The uppervertical partitions 11 `are maintainedl in xed positions by their horizontally 'bent edges 16 .and 17, respectively, being ixed to top 5 and horizental partition 10. Lowervertical portions 11 are maintained in fixed positions yby their horizontallybent edges 18 and 19, respectively, being fixed to horizontal partition 10 and bottom 6. The bent or turned edges of the partitions may be :fixed in their respective positions to the adjoining surfaces by as soldering orspot tops 21 and 22, respectively,of the horizontal partition and the bottom, are smooth and free from a roughened or cutting surface,
.and whereby the edges are unadapted to injure the flesh of a person who extends his hands into compartments 9 for placing articlestherein or removing articles therefrom. Furthermore, theupturned edges 14 and 2O are considerably strengthened by having one layer of material bentt upon 'the other. Sturdiness of construction is especially desirable and advantageous at these points when it isl considered that frontupturned edges 25 and 25', respectively, fixed' to the upper edges ofsides 3 and 4.Back 7 has upperhorizontal inwardlybent edge 26 fixed to the rearlongitudinal edge 27 ofupper layer 23 of top 5 having spaced apartholes 28 and 29 therein, whereby sto s 30 and 31 are formed integral with the ack, and extending upwardly and in alinement therewith.
 Eccentric plates'or catches32 and 33, respectively,lare mounted onrivets 34 and 35, respectively, `fixed inholes 34 and 3 5 in back 7'. The catches 32 and 33, respectively,
are positionedadjacent holes 28 and 29 so.
that thecatches ymay be manuallyv rotated by actuation of finger contactoutwardlyextending flanges 36, whereby projectingpoints 37 and 38, respectively, are adapted to extend through-holes 28 and 29 in.top 5 and 1n engagement withlower edge 39 of back of upper section2and whereby theupper section 2 and Alowersection 2 are 4locked in' the position as shown in Fig. 1 with the bot` tom of the u per section in close` contact with the top of t e lower section at 40.
U peredges 41 and 42 ofsides 3land 4 are ent U-shaped, wherebygrooves 43 and .44 are formed for slidably receiving'inturnhorizontal edges 45 and 46, respectivelyxofsides 3 and 4 of the lower section and which is made possible by the construction of bottom 6 havingportions 47 and 48 bent up- .,ple, practlcal, etlicient and highly desirable wardly at 49 then outwardly at 50 and then upwardly at 51, wherebyspace 52 is formed between inturnededge 45 oflside 3 and upturnedportion 49 of'bottom 6 andsimilar space 53 is formed between inturnededge 46 ofside 4andupturned portion 49 of bottom' 6. vThevspaces 52 and 53, respectively, are
` adapted to receivecurved portions 54 and 55.
respectively, ofU-shaped edges 41 `and 44 of the adjoining section for slidingupper section 2 into engagement withlower section 2 to a point where the stops 3() and 31, formed on the upper edge ofback 7 are adapted to engage the lower edge ofback 7 ofsection 2 for maintaining the front edges and rear edges, respectively, of the adjoining sections 1n alinement with each other, as
tom 6, wherebysection 2 is locked in engagement with section 2', as heretofore explained.
When it is desired to-Separat'e sections 2 and 2eccentric catches 32 and 33 are manually rotated untilbases 61 contactlower edge 24 of top 5 whereby therespective points 37 and 38 are removed fromslots 56 and 57 and disengaged from the lower edge ofback 7, thereby permitting'inturnededges 45 and 46, respectively` ofsides 3 and 4 of the upper section to. be slidably removed from the respective grooves. 43 and 44 of the lower section.
In Fig. 6 I show a perspective of the formedsides 3 and4 andback 7 `integrally connected, whereby this portion of my invention is adapted to be stamped, by suitable machinery,`from a vsingle sheet of material and then formed by suitable, means. Top 5 and bottom 6, also, are adaptedto be stamped and formed from respect-ive pieces of sheet material and thenv assembled'with the intel shown in Fig. 1. Manual rotation of eccengrally formed sides and back. Downwrdly turned ends'25 and 25', respectively, of top 5 areprovided withnotches 62 and 63 at their outer ends, whereby -'assembling the -top and sides and back is greatly simplified, 1 as end 64 of the top may be inserted at 65 ofside 3 and then by slightly bending the top the other end 66 of the top may be inserted at 67 ofside 4 and then the top maybe slid rearwardly so thatrear edge 60 engages the under side of inturnededge 26 ofback 7. It is understood that the word plurality, afs used herein means two or more.
It is apparent that I have invented a simnaar cially advantageous when it is considered that it is comparatively a simple matter to rearrange the sections or remove them from place to place without the necessity of remodeling the bin or tearing it apart for they purpose ofremoval or changing its location.
Furthermore, my invention may be used for other purposes than the construction of storage bins. It -is a parent that such uses of my invention as 1n the construction of lockers, bookcases, etc. is especially advantageous, and if desired the sections may be connected horizontally as well as vertically in the same manner. 4
While I have chosen to illustrate the form and construction of my invention by the herein drawings and explanations of the same, it is understood that my invention resides in the combination, arrangement of parts and the details of construction, as hereinater claimed, and that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
