Description

c. E. SANKEY FOOT PROTECTOR Filed May 18, 1927 11667535503: Inventor:
Patented Aug. 30, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATIENT, OFFICE.
oLnvron 1:. sugar, or ELLWOOD cIrY, rmw'srnvmm.
' a room rnornc'ron.
Application filed na 18,
'This invention relates to foot protectors and more particularly to a combined toe andfoot protector adapted to be worn over the shoes of workmen in industrial plants to 5 protect the feet of the workmen against falling objects. r
In rolling mills and other industrial plants -workmen are often. engaged in handling heavy objects such as billets weighing more than a hundred pounds, and in many instances such objects are allowed to slip or fall either on the feet of the workman himi self, or onto the feet of other worlnnen, causing crushed toes and other painful injuries. 5 The present foot'protector is-constructed of relatively light metal, but due to it's novel construction has suflicient stiffness and strength to withstand the blows from anyv object that a man can handle. Also due to the novel shape and construction of the-foot of theprotector shown as applied to thefoot of a wearer.
35. Referring more particularlyto the drawings, the numeral2 designates the body of.
' the foot protector guard as a whole, which;
is generally arched or convex incro'ss-section to bridge over the'forepart or too andinstep- 40 of the foot: ofthe person wearing'the same,
Thebody 2 has an openbottom and is of a f widthsufiicie'nt, to' clear the sides: of theshoe of the wearer and of a height sufiicient to clear the top of the foot when the lower.
' edgesof the body "are in engagement" with 1 piece of p ate'.
the mind. Tl iiibody 2 of and is for d or ressed into plurality of transversely extending and .one centrally arranged longitudinally' extending. stifien'mg and reeni ingribs 3 and-4, raspectivelmare p. up
I the protector is preferably 1 made of a relatively light ga e metal plate ape from one" s sm! ew 1927. Serial No..192,360.
in the body and have a convex cross-section. Theribs 3 and 4 serve to materially strength on thebody 2 against collapseand permit a lighter gage metal to be used for the body than could otherwise be used.
The rear ends of the lower edges of thebody 2 are cut away to form ofisets 5 which terminate close .to the underside of the arch of the shoe of the wearer, and a flexible tie member 6 is riveted or otherwise secured to the sides of the 2 at the ofisets 5 and ex-- tends transversely of the body. The. tie member 6 exten under the arch of the wearers shoe and serves to prevent. the
spreading of the side portions of the body,
and also serves to hold the body of the protector downon the foot of the wearer.
- A securing strap 7 has one end secured to one side of thebody 2 and is adapted to be extended around the ankle of the wearer and have its other end detachably and adjustably secured by a buckle 8 secured by a short length of strap 9 to the-other side of thebody 2;
The function of the foot and toe guard described above Willbe apparent from the above'description. Heavy objects dropped or allowed to fall on the feet ofthe-wearer will be stopped or deflected without injury p to the feet by-the stiflt'metal body 2.
While I have shown and described one form of my invention, it will be understoodthat .I do not wish to be limited thereto since" various modifications may be made. without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claim.
'I' claim 'A; toe and foot protector comprising a metal-body portion generally convex in crossf *section and shaped to fit over the toe and instep portion of a shoe encased foot ofthe' wearer, said bodyportion being of greater 'width than the wearers shoe so that its side edges will be free to engage the ground, said he rality o transverse st ening and ree orcing-ribs and at least one longitudinal stiffportion' being iprovided with a lu emng j'and reenforcing' rib, and means for securing saidprotector' to the :foot of the: wearer.'
