FASTENER.

This invention relates to temporary fastening means for securing wrappers about commodities which it is desirable to enclose within an envelope or wrapper, and as here (.lisclosed, is shown in connection with the wrapping and temporarily securing of the burlap or fabric wrappers with which it is usual to envelop or wrap round bales of cotton.
An object of the invention is to provide a. convenient and simple fastening means which may be attached toa wrapper, and, as the wrapper is fed through the press during the step of covering a' bale, will temporarily hold the cover in snug condition about the bale ready for the permanent sewing or securing of the wrapper.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a view, somewhat diagrammatic, of a round bale press and a wrapper having an embodiment of the present inven tion applied thereto, partially wrapped around the completed bale.

Referring to the drawings in which like numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several views, indicates generally a press of any desired type designed for forming a round bale from a suitable bat of cotton. The formed bale is shown at .11 with the cover 12 partially wrapped about the bale, said cover 12 being generally of burlap or other suitable fabric, and passing to the press in a continuous sheet from the wrapper roll 13, disposed in proper relation to the press.
The bale 11 will, of course, be formed in the usual manner by feeding the bat down the feed chute 141 to therollers 15 of the press, and when the bale has been formed, the cover 12 will then be fed into the press, and, by continued operation of the press, wrapped around the bale until it is brought to the overlapped position indicated at 16 in Fig. 2.

from the roll 13 will, of course, be severed at an appropriate pointbetween the press and the roll 13, after the bale 11 has been completely wrapped and the ends of the cover have been brought to the overlapped position disclosed in Fig. 2.
In this position, the bale is completed,
the cover has been applied, and the covered bale is ready to be removed from the press.
It is necessary, however, to temporarily secure the cover 12 at its lapped ends, in order that when the bale is removed from the press, the expansion of the highly resilient cotton will not displace the cover iand distort the compressed and symmetrical oale.
In my present improvement, this is accomplished by the use of the temporary fastening device shown in detail in Figs. 3, 4 and 5.
The device, as there shown, comprises a fastener made up of thebody member 17, which, will be seen from Figs. 3, 4 and 5, is comparatively thin and of polygonal shape, being shown as square. The body has chamfered, tapered, orrounded portions 18 on its top side at each corner. The purpose oi. these c-hamferedportions 18 is to enable the fastener to pass easilybetween the surface of thepress rollers 15 and the periphery of the bale without aifect-ing the relation of the fastener to the cover 12. EX- tending from said body memberat a point substantially at the center thereof is ashank 19, having a conical enlargement orend 20, whichenlargement 20 is adapted to pierce the cover 12 and temporarily secure the overlapped ends of said cover together.
Thebase portion 21 of the conical enlargement has square sides as shown at 22, which sides are formed by grinding off the base of the cone. It will be noted that the sides 22 are arranged at an angle with respect to the sides of thebody member 17, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. It will be noted further that the sides 22 terminate at their meeting ends in sharp points orbarbs 23 which engage and se curely hold the threads of the cover and preventthe fastening device from being accidentally withdrawn from the cover 12 after it has been once forced through it. The
- base or under side of the conical enlargement presents a plane or flat surface to the cover and is parallel to the under face of thebody member 17.
In applying the fastener to the cover 12 as it is fed from the roll 13, the squared ranged with respect to the body member, is
also diagonalto the weave of the burlap, or other cover material, and that the points orbarbs 23 securely hold the threads and prevent the displacement ofthe fastener.
Bythe use of such a construction, it is extremely ditficult to remove the temporary fastener from the cover; in fact, the fastener cannot be accidentally removed from the overlapping ends of the cover as shown at 16, Fig. 2, after theroller 15 has once caused the enlargement to penetrate the cover and be maintained in position therein bythe engagement of the barbs with the threads.
I claim:
1. A fastener of the class described comprising a substantially flat body member having its exposed surface chamfered at the corners thereof, and a reduced shank extending from said body member and having ,anenlargement of substantially conical form, the base of said enlargement being polygonal.
2. A fastener of the class described comprising a bodymember, and a shank extending from said body member having a conical enlargement, the base of said on largement being substantially square.
3. A fastener of the class described comprising a body member, and a shank ex tending from said body member having a conical enlargement, the base of said enlargement having cut away sides.
4. A fastener of the class described comprising a flat polygonal-shaped body member having its exposed top surface rounded off at each corner, and a shank extending from said body member and terminating in a conical enlargement, the base of said enlargement having straight sides arranged diagonally with respect to the sides of the body member. 5. A fastener of the class described comprising a body member of polygonal form, and a shank extending from said body member having an enlargement of conical form, thcbase of said enlargement having straight sides arranged at an angle to the sides of said bodymember.
6. A fastener of the class described comprising a substantially square body member, and a shank extending from the body member and having an enlargement of conical form, the base of said enlargement being provided with straight sides, which are arranged at an angle to the sides of the body member.
