R. w. BOSTWICK WINDOW REGULATOR LOCK Filed Sept. 24, 1923 Patented Feb. 9, 1926.
I UNITED STATES PATENT orrics.
ROBERT W. BOSTWICK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN. i
WINDOW-REGULATOR LOCK.
Application filed September 24, 1923. Serial no 664,558.
,To all whomizf may concern Be it known that I, Ronnnr W. Bos'rwron, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wlayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nindow-Regulator Looks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to window regulators designed particularly for use in motor vehicles and refers to a lock for holding the window in its adjusted position. One of the objects of the invention is the provision \Vith these as well as other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully herein after set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an inside elevation, partly broken away, of a motor vehicle door with my invention applied;
Figure 2 is across section on theline 22 of Figure 1;
Figures 3 and 4; are cross sections respectively on lines 83 and 4:4: of Fig ure 2. a
1 is the lock board of a motor vehicle door and 2 the window vertically slidably engaging in guideways in the hinge and lock upright members or posts of the door. The window regulator for raising and lowering the window, as shown in the present in stance, comprises theflexible rack 3 connected near its lower end to the window and driven by means of a driving gear i upon the inner side of the lock board 1.
For locking the window in its various adjusted positions, I have provided a positive lock for holding the driving gear 4- from rotation in either direction. This lock is controlled by arotatable handle 5 which also controls the raising and lowering of the window. In detail, the lock comprises theratchet wheel 6, the teeth of which are engageable by the pawls 7 and 8' pivotally mounted intermediate their ends upon thedisk 9 which is secured to the shaft 10 of the'driving gearby means of the transverse in 11 extendin throu h the shaft and en- L'.) i D gaging 111 diametrically oppositeradial slots 12 in the disk. 13 1s a U-shaped spring embracing the shaft 10 and having its opposite ends engaging the pawls 7 and 8 to force their noses outwardly and mto engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel. The arrangements of pawls is such that their noses engage teeth upon the ratchet wheel at opposite sides of the shaft 10 and as a consequence each pawl holds theshaft and consequently thedriving gear 4 from rotation in one direction. Since the pawls engage teeth, the locking of the driving gear from rotation in either direction is positive.
For the purpose of alternately releasing the pawls from engagement withthe teeth of the ratchet wheel, I have provided the I release member 14 secured to theshaft 15 of the handle and provided with the transverse pin 16 engageable between the free ends of the pawls 7 and 8. With this arrangement, when thehandle 5 is rotated the release member. will also be rotated and its transverse pin will engage either the one pawl or the other, depending upon the direction of rotation, to rockthat pawl about the teeth, at which time the face will en gage the sprin for preventing any further rocking movement from taking place and. also preventing the free end of the pawl from coming into engagement with. the teeth of the ratchet wheel while the driving gear is being rotated from the handle. lVhile one of the pawls is retained disengaged from the ratchet Wheel, the nose of the other pawl is sliding over the teeth of the ratchet wheel, and as soon as rotation of the handle is stopped, the pawl previously disengaged from the ratchet wheel is returnezl to its normal position by thespring 13 to cooperate with the other pawl in holding the window from either raising or lowering unless actuated by the handle.
Toprovide a construction which is com paratiyely cheap to mai'iufacture and which provides bearings for the driving gear shaft and handle shaft, the casing for the pawls 7 and S and associateddisk 9 comprises the centrally recesseddisk 17, the centrally apertured disk 18, and the ratchet wheel therewith. I The'se disks and ratchet wheel are rigidly has acylindrical flange 22 sleeved over the inner end of the handle shaft and secured thereto by a transverse pin, and since the handle shaft is journalled in theescutcheon 23, it is maintained in properaxial position. The driving gear shaft in addition to being jo'urnalled in thedisk 17 is ournalled in the release member in axial alignment with the handle shaft. The pawls and 8,disk 9,ratchet wheel 6, disks 1'? and 18 and release member 14 are preferably formed of stampings.
hat I claim as my invention is:
l. The combination with a gear rotatable in opposite directions for raising and lower ing'a window, of a stationary ratchet wheel,
a disk between said ratchet wheel and gear and connected to the latter, pivoted pawls upon said disk and engageable with the teeth of said ratchet wheel on opposite sides of its axis, means for yieldably forcing said pawls into engagement with the teeth, and an operating member having an alternative driving contact with the free ends of said pawls for releasing either of said pawls and subsequently rotating said gear in either direction through the released pawl and said disk.
2. The combination with a 'ear rotatable in'opposite directions for raising and lowering window, of a casing including a ratchet wheel, a disk rotatably mounted within said casing,'pawls pivoted upon said disk and cngag'eable with the teeth of said ratchet wheel, a shaft for said gear journalled in said casingand connected. to said disk, and an operating member journalled in said (as ing and adapted to have an alternative driving engagement with said pawls for releasing the same'and subseqiiiently rotating said gear.
3. The combination with a member movable in opposite directions for raising and lowering a window, of a stationary casing including a ratchet wheel, a disk engaging and rotatably mounted within said casing,
pawis carried by said disk and engageablc with the diskof said ratchetwheel, a release member engaging and rotatably mounted in said casing, a projection upon said release member alternatively en a'ageable with the free ends of said pawls, a shaft for said gear wheel ournalled in said casing and release member and connected to said. disk, and a handle secured to said release mei'i'ibcr.
In testimony whereof I a'flix my signature.
ROBERT \V. BOSTWICK.
