Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
, UNITED STATES THIELO B. sonnnrrnaor SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA.
NOZZLE JACK.
, Application filed May 1,
To all whom it may concern.
San Bernardino, county of San Bernardino,
and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Nozzle Jack, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lawn hose supporting devices, that is, to devices for supporting the hose during the operation of sprinkling.
The object of my invention is to provide a support for lawn hose which will effectually hold the nozzle in any desired diroction during the s rinkling or water operation. Further ob ects of my invention are to provide a device of the character mentioned which may be readily placed in operative position, and which will not injure the lawn. A further object of my invention is to provide a device of thecharacter mentionedwhich may be attached to the hose and when not in use as a supporting device may be folded snugly against or about the hose, so thatit shall not interfere in any way with the usual manipulation of the hose. Further objects of my invention are to provide a device of the character mentioned which shall be of simple construction, light in weight, of low cost to manufacture, and which will not readily get out of order. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Vith these objects in view my invention consists generally in a standard having a pointed lower end to be inserted in the lawn, a sleeve pivotally mounted at the upper end of the standard and adapted to receive the hose at or adjacent the nozzle, and means for securing the sleeve in adjusted position. My invention further consists in adevice as mentioned further characterized by means on the standard for holding the same in position against the hose when not in use as a support. -My invention further consists, in one of its forms, in a device as mentioned in which the standard comprises a substantially tubular member open at one side to receive the adjacent portion of the .hose when the latter is to be used by hand or when the hose is to be stored. My invention further consists in a device as mentioned further characterized by means on the standard to facilitate inserting the hose therein My invention further consists in various details 9f coestruct on and a enas- 1922. Serial No. 557,584.
ments of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.
a My invention will be more readily understood by 7 reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a hose supporting device embodying my invention in its preferred form, illustrating the same in use,
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same with the hose clamping sleeve arranged in horizontal position, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a modified form of the standard.
Referring now to thedrawings 1 indicates the standard of the device which may be tubular as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 or a straight flat member as illustrated in Fig. 3. The lower end of the standard is pointed as at 2 to facilitate inserting the same in the ground as illustrated in Fig. 1. The standard is preferably formed of heavy sheet metal, and is preferably tubular in form as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2; and when of this form, it is open along one side as at 3 to facilitate inserting the hose therein when the standard is folded against the hose for using the device by hand or storage. To facilitate entry of the hose into the tubular standard, outwardly curved ears 4 are provided on the edges defining theopening 3. When the standard is of the form shown in Fig. 3 I provide the same with the curved clips 5 for receiving the hose and holding the standard thereagainst. In this form the ears 5 serve the same purpose as the sides of the tubular member and the ears 4.
The upper end of the standard is provided with a pair oflugs 6 between which a sleeve 7 is pivotally mounted, The sleeve 7 is preferably split and open at the top to facilitate inserting the hose therein and abolt 8 is provided for clampin the sleeve on the hose. The edges of the split sleeve 7 are outwardly turned as at 9 to facilitate inserting the hose and to form a stop or abutment for thenut 10 for thebolt 8 preventing the same from turning as the screw of the bolt is turned to clamp or release the hose. One of thetrunnions 11 of the sleeve 7 is threaded to receive awing nut 12 thereby providing means for clam ing the sleeve at any desired angle. It will be observed that the l gs xt nd' e l above thest nd r 1 SQ that the sleeve may be positioned at any angle without any interference.
It is obvious that the device above described may be readily secured to a garden hose and become a substantially permanent attachment thereto. When the hose is stored or used by hand the sleeve 7 is turned into alignment with the standard 1 and said standard clamped upon the hose. When it is desired to use the device as a hose support the standard may be swung outwardly from the hose to the sleeve and clamped at the desired angle by thewing nut 12. The pointed end of the standard is readily inserted in the ground and being of sheet. metal will not injure the lawn.
I claim: A device of the class described comprising a standard formed of sheet metal curved to form a tubular member open at one side and pointed at one end, the opposite end being provided with a pair of ears extending beyond the tubular portion, a split sleeve pivotally mounted between said ears, means for clamping said sleeve upon a hose, said sleeve being adapted to be swung in a position in axial alignment with said tubular standard and the edges of the open side of said standard being provided with outwardly flared ears to facilitate entry of the hose in said standard when said sleeve is brought into axial alignment therewith, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
THIELO B. SCHREITER.
