COLLAPSIBLE GRATE.
Application filed September To all whom it may concern;
 Be it known that I, EARL MCMAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland. in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Grates, of which the following isa specification.
 This invention contemplates the provision of a collapsible grate structure primarily intended for use by campers or the like, the grate when folded producing a small compact article which can be conveniently carried, and one which is capable of being easily and quickly set up for use.
 The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
 In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
 Figure 1 is a grate structure.
- Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view of one of the side bars.
 Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail view of one of the cross bars.
 Figure 4 is a detail View of one of the supporting legs.
 The grate forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a pair of spaced parallel side bars and a plurality of transverse bars which are terminally connected with the side bars in the manner to permit the parts to be readily separated when it is desired to fold the structure into a small compact article. For this purpose each side bar includes twosections 10 and 11 respectively which sections have their adjacent ends overlapped and pivoted together as at 12. Thecorresponding sections 10 of the respective side bars, each terminate at one end to form a downturned lug which lug is disposed to contact the other section 11 to limit the pivotal'move-. ment of the respective sections in one direction, when sections are being extended for use. Each side bar is also provided with a plurality ofopenings 14, each opening receiving one of the downturned extremities perspective view of the 3, 1924. Serial No. 735,649.
 15 of across rod 16. Each of these cross rods are substantially of U-shaped formation, and can be easily associated with the side bars as shown in Figure 1, wherein all of thecross bars 16 are'equi-distantly spaced apart. In addition to being provided withopenings 14, each side bar is provided with two additional openings adjacent the ends thereof to receive supportinglegs 17, each leg being of the construction shown in Figure 4, wherein it will be noted that the lower end of each leg is pointed as at 18 so that the said legs can be easily driven into the ground to support the grate. At a point adjacentthe upper end thereof, each leg is flattened as at 19 to provide oppositely bulgedportions 20 which constitute shoulders upon which the said bars of the grate rest, when the legs are inserted in the openings 21. The grate in its entirety can be easily and quickly set up for use as shown in Figure 1, and it can also be easily collapsed and folded to occupy a minimum amount of space when not in use. In order to collapse or fold the grate it is only necessary to remove each of thecross rods 16 from theirrespective openings 14, then separate thelegs 17 from the side members, and subsequently fold thesection 10 of each side member upon its cooperating section 11. Then the legs and Crossbars can be arranged in parallel relation with the folded side bars to produce a comparatively small article which can be conveniently carried by a person or'conveiniently arranged in an automobile or the li *e.
 While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within. the scope of what is claimed.
lVhat I claim is In a collapsible grate of the character described, a frame comprising spaced parallel members, each including pivoted sections adapted to be arranged in end to end relation for use, and capable of being folded one beneath the other when not in use, each member having a plurality of spaced openings, inverted substantially U-shaped cross bars connecting said members and having their parallel extremities received by the correspendlng openings 1nE said member and 7 adapted to, be removed to permiiilthe. frame tobe folded, legs supporting the frame adja;
each
the openings in the adjacent member of the frame and a flattened portion arranged adneen theupper end of each leg to. provide opposed bulged portions upon which the frame, r poses.v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. EARL MCMAHAN.
