Be it lrnown that l, Gnonon N. Hnr1v, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San lrancisco, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Retaining Devices for Syringes, oftwhich the following is a specication. v
illy invention relates in general to the classof hypodermic needlesyrin, and in particular to a type of such syringes in which the syringe barrel is provided with a discharge nipple 'adapted for the frictional association therewith of a soclret base of a needle, or other member carrying said needle. ll/ly invention consists in the novel retaining assembly hereinafter fully de ,scribed by reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating its best and preferred form, it bein understood that changes may be made within the scope of the claims hereunto appended without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The nipple is tapers erteriorly to its extremity. Referring now particularly to Fig. l, t is the needle having the usual socket base ll' with the terminal exterior peripheral bead 4". "ll "1. en the socket base of the needle is entered upon the barrel nipple l', the bead Ll of said base passes withinhelix spring 3, the largerterminal coil 3 of the spring slipping readily over the bead t of the needle base Il and snapping down behind said bead with holding effect. ln this fitting of the needle to the helix-armed nipple, it will be seen that the operation is one which is readily and easily performed due to the capacious outer end of the helix, and the relatively large resilient nature of said end, and also that the retention of the needle whilesuilicient for operative, purposes is yet capable of being easily broken in order to remove the needle, without disengaging the helix from the nipple.
ln cases where, between the syringe and it is necessary to use some form of needle-carrying extension or memsimilar to the base of the needle, while its other end may be provided with any suitdevice for the needle proper.

The other cey end of the extension gnember 5 may be' provided with a similar. helix attachment, butfor the. purposes of illustration I have shown a needle astenig comprising a nipple; 6' of said extension member adapted to receive the socket base of the needle, and aU-shaped spring 6 received betweencollars 6 on the extension member, the arms of said spring being adapted to resiliently bear upon the needle base.
I claim: Y
1. A. needle retaining assembly for syringes comprising a syringe barrel having a discharge nipple; a helical spring resiliently engaging at its inner end the base of said nipple the remainder of said spring surrounding and spaced from said nipple; and a member having a socket base fitted upon said nipple and within said spring, the outer end of the spring resiliently engaging said base.
2. A needle retaining assembl for syringes comprising a syringe barrel avin a discharge nipple; a helical spring t y upon said nipple, said spring being tapered and its coils decreasingV in pitch from its outer to its inner end, the inner terminal coil resilientlyrengaging the nipple and its remainingl coils spaced therefrom; and a member aving a socket-base fitted upon said nipple and within said sprin the outer termina gaging said base. v
3.A needle retaining assembl for syringes comprising a syrin e barrel iaving a forwardly tapering disc arge nipple, a helical spring fitted upon said ni ple, said spring being tapered and its coils ecreasing in pitch from its outer to its innerend, the inner terminalcoil resiliently engaging the enlarged'baseof the nipple, and its remaining coils spaced from the nipple; and a member having a socket base fitted upon said nipple and within said spring, said base `having an exterior "bead,y with which the outer terminal coil of the spring resiliently engages.
