Description

Dec. 30, 1924 A. a. MEYER gRusa FOR CLEANING NASAL PASMGES Patented Dec. 30, 1924.
UNITED STATES BRUSH FOR CLEANING NASAL PASSAGES.
Application filed March 9, 1922. Serial No. 542,239.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Brush for Cleaning Nasal Passages; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to nasal brushes or devices for cleaning out the nasal passages. is the nasal passages are curved and are delicate in construction, a special form of brush is required for this purpose.
It is an object, therefore, of the present invention to provide a brush which may be inserted into the nasal passages without injury thereto.
A further object of the invention is to provide a flexible brush made wholly of rubher.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and draw- JIl S.
lhe invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of a brush constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an end view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view showing the brush in operation in the nasal cavity.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section showing the rubber bristle construction.
As shown on the drawings:
The brush comprises a shaft 1 of flexible material, preferably rubber, having bristles 2 secured thereto around one end. These bristles are inclined towards the opposite end of the shaft to facilitate the insertion of the brush into the nasal passages or other cavity. When the brush is withdrawn the ends of the bristles engage the sides of the cavity and must be bent back, as shown in Figure 3, before they can slide over the wall of the cavity. In this way they press firmly against the walls of the cavity and cleanse the same thoroughly. Conveniently these bristles may be formed of rubber so as to be not only flexible, but also readily freed from adhering dirt and other material.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing fro-m the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
In a device for cleaning the nasal passages, a flexible rubber shaft providing a handle at one end and tapering toward the other end, flexible rubber bristles on said shaft inclined outward and toward the handle end thereof, each of said bristles tapering from the shaft outward and having a blunt outer end, the bristles being distributed around the shaft and varying progressively in length, the shorter ones being near the smaller end of the shaft whereby the bristles form a cone-like body. the large end of which is next to the handle.
In testimony whereof .I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR R. MEYER.
Vitnesses FRED E. PAESLER. JAMEs M. OBRIEN.
