Description

Patented Nov. 25, 19242.
SIF'FEI ANTONE F. TRIGUEIRO, 0F ORCUTT, CALIFORNIA.
SASH LOCK.
Appflieation filed May 16, 1923.' Serial No. 639,398.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AN'roNn F. TRI- oUnIRo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orcutt, in the count of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This inventioifrelates to improvements in sash locks and has as its object to provide a device of this class which may be readily applied by any one to the sashes of a window and which will serve to lock the sashes in such a manner as to prevent the lower sash. being raised or the upper sash lowered by any one, from the exterior of the building, although one within the building may readily adjust the sashes.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that it will be inexpensive to manufacture, simple in construction, and very durable. In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sash lock embodying the invention;
F i re 2 is a vertical front to rear tiona view through the lock.
The device embodying the invention comprises a lock proper and a keeper member, and the lock embodies a casing which is insecdi'cated in general by the numeral 1 and comprises a cover section 2having atop 3 and depending sides 4, the said section also having a depending rear end wall 5 and being provided at the lower edges of its side walls a with. outstanding horizontal flanges 6. The casing further includes a bottom section 7 comprising abottom plate 8 havingan upstanding forward end 9 constituting the forward end wall of the casing 1, being arranged to close the forward end of the cover section of the casing when the sections are assembled. Securing screws or the like, indicated by the numeral 10 may be fitted through registering omningsin the flanges 6 and marginal portions of the bottom late 8 and driven into the upper rail of t e lower" sash of the window, which sash is indicated by the reference letter S. The end wall 5 of the cover section 2 extends below the plane of thebottom plate 8 and is preferably seated in a countersink 1;. formed in the forward face of 'the said lower sash S. The locking bolt of the device is indicated by the numeral 12 and this bolt is provided at its rear end with a reducedstem 13 terminating in afinger knob 14, this reduced portion of} theshank of the bolt extending through an opening. 15 formed in the upstanding end wall 9 of the casing. The opposite end of the bolt projects through an opening 16 formed in the depending end wall 5 of the casing, and a collar or Washer 17 is fitted on to the shank of the bolt near its last mentioned projecting end and is restrained, against longitu dinal displacement in one direction by means of a cotter pin 18 or other suitable equivalent means. A spring 19 of the compression type is fitted on to the shank of the bolt and bears at one end against the collar or washer 17 and at its other end against the end wall 9 of the casing, and this spring normally holds the forward end of the bolt projected through the opening 16 so that it may engage the member as will now be explained, it being understood that by grasping the finger piece 14-, the bolt 12 may be retracted against the tension of the said spring 19. V
The keeper member of the device is indicatedin general by thenumeral 20 and this member comprises a bar or strip 21 of metal which is formed at intervals in its length withopenings 22, the openings being arranged in a longitudinal series and bemg of a diameter to accommodate the projecting forward end of the latch bolt 12. The strip 21 is secured by screwstorother fastening elements 23 to the inner face of one stile of the upper sash of the window which sash is indicated by the reference character S. If desired the stile of the upper sash may be formed with sockets 2t registering with the]openin 22 in the keeper late or strip 21 thereby 1nsuring of a more firm seating ofthe locking bolt in the opening in the keeper.
From the foregoing description of the invention it will be seen that when the latch bolt 12 is engaged in one or another of: theopenings 22 of the keeper, the two sashes of the windowwill be locked against relative movement so that the lower sash cannot be raised nor can the upper sash be lowered ex- 7 cept upon retraction of the bolt a ainst the tension of the sprin '19 whereupon such adjustment of the sas es as may be desired, may be readily obtained. It will also be observed from the drawings that the two sections of the casing are lon 'tudinally displaceablev so that in assem ling the parts of the lock proper, the bolt with the spring 19 thereon may be fitted into place with its locking end engaging in the opening 16,
whereupon the casing section 7 may be slid to position fitting with the casing section 2 and with thefinger knob 14 of the locking bolt projecting through theopening 15, the spring 19 being at such time suitably compressed, and the engagement of the screws 10' through the openingin the casing sections servin to not only maintain the sections in their proper assembled relation but also to secure the lock proper as a whole to the lower sash of the window.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: 1 1. A sash lock comprisingka casing having end walls oppositely located and provided each with an opening, a locking boltdisposed within the casing and having a looking end engaging through the opening in one end wall ofthe casing and a finger piece engaging through the opening in the other end wall of the casing, an abutment element upon the locking bolt within the casing, and a compression spring surrounding the locking bolt and seating at one end against the abutment element and at its other end against the last mentioned wall of the casing, the said casing comprising cover and bottom sections, the first mentioned end wall of the casing constituting a part of one of said sections, and the other end wall of, the casing constituting a part of the other. section of the leasing, the said sections being longitua -inally displaceable and separable and provided with overlapping portions having openings for the passage of securing elements.
2'. A sash lock comprising a casing having end walls oppositely located and provided each with an opening, a locking bolt disposed within the casing and having a locking end engaging through the opening in one end wall of the casing and a finger piece engaging through the openin 'in the other end Wall of the casing, an abutment element upon the locking bolt within the easing, a compression spring surrounding'the locking bolt and seating at one end against the abutment element and at its other end against the last mentioned wall of the easing, the said casing comprising cover and bottom sections, the first mentioned end wall of the casing constituting a part of one of said sections, an extension from the said first mentioned end Wall of the casing projecting downwardly therefrom below the plane of the bottom section, and the otherend Wall of the casing constituting a part of the other section of the casing, the said sections being longitudinally displaceable and separable and provided with overlap:
ping portions having openings for the passage of securin elements, the said down Ward extension 0 the first mentioned end wall of the casing having an opening for the passage of a securing element.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
