4 H. D. GUNTHER CHIROPRACTI C TABLE Fiied March 23. 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 awn swig Patented June 24, 1924 HENRY DAVID G'UNTHER, OF
BROQKLYN, NEW YORK.
onrnorfrvaorro TABLE.
Application filed March 1923. seriarno. 627,112.
a citizen of the United States, residing at 94c? VVilloughby Ave, Brooklyn, in the county ofKings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 1m provements in Chiropractic Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to surgical appliances, and has special reference to a chiropractic table. 7
The principal and most important object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of chiropractic table wherein the several parts of the table may be folded so that they may be packed together in'the form of a hand satchel, and wherein special provisionof novel and improved character is made for the support of the abdomen of the patient during certain manipulations of the lower part of the spine and the parts adjacent thereto, the invention also contemplating the spring supports for this portion of the table which are peculiarly arranged so as not to interfere with the fold; ing of this section when packing the table.
With the above and other objectsin view, as willbe hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of the novel details ofconstruction which are illustrated in one preferred form in the drawings accompanying this specification and forming apart thereof, and which are hereinafter described in detail and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. I
In the drawings 1 Fig.1 is a perspective View showing the two sections of the table assembled in the proper: position for operation on a patient.
Fig. 2 is a. detail perspective view showing the section which supports the upper part of the patients trunk folded. 4 V a V Fig. 3 is a view similar tolfig. 2, but showing the section which supports the patients le s and the lower 1 part of the abdomen, the view also showing this section folded.
Fig. i is a perspective view of the entire device packed ready for transportation.
Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal section showing the abdominal supporting bracket.
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing portions of the adjacent ends of the sections with th abdominal supporting bracket held entirely by one set of the springs.
Fig t" is a view similar to Fig. 6, but showing the second set of springs in use.
Jig. 8 detail view on the line 8-8 oi Fig. 5 I
Fig. 9 is a. longitudinal section taken through F d with the central portion broken away.
in th construction of the invention there are provided two sections, each of which includes a substantially rectangular angle iron f ame 10, to which is pivoted, at each end, a pair oflegs 11, these legs being so arranged that they can be folded within the boundaries of the angle iron frame, as disclosed in Figures 2 and 3, cream be extended as in Fig. l, and secured in extended position bypivoted braces 12 having adjacent-their free ends doublekey hole slots 13, so thatthey may be slid over butterfly headed screws I l, and then clamped by such screv s securely to the leg so that there is no possibility of the table collapsing under the heavy usage to which such tables are subjected. .i
The upper or head section of the table is provided with a suitable opening '15 formed in the padding l6 wherewith the sections are covered, the openinglt'i being for the purpose of permitting-the patient to lie face downward with his face in the opening so that he may maintain a recumbent position without turning his head to one side or the other, and yet rest in comfort. Similarly, the other section is provided with an open ing 1''? for tlie like purpose of enabling the patient to rest comfortably on the table.
The two sections thus formed constitute practically two shallow trays, and on the lower or foot section of the table, there is provided a set ofpins 18 which can be engaged by l -shaped latch members 19 when the two sections are placed together and slid longitudinally, the sections being ret-t 'ned in the longitudinally slid position by aitable lock 20* when desired At the upper end of the foot section on the underside of thetop 21 of this section, there is provided a pair ofalined brackets 22, to which are pivotedbent arms 23, the arms being so bent as to provide U-shapedportions 24 to enable these arms to pass under the vertical flange of the angle iron frame 10 when the arms are swung outwardly. The free ends of these arms are flattened as at 25, and carried by these free ends is apiate 26, having apadded cover 27 thereover. It will be observed from an lnspectron of Figures 3 and 5, that these arms and the cover and padded plate may either be folded within the frame as disclosed in Figure 3, or swung outward so that the plate may lie between the two sections of the table when the latter are spaced adj acent each other in alinement as shown in Figures 1, 6 and 7.
Projecting from each side of the bent portion 2% of thearms 23 is apin 28, and on each of these pins is secured one end of a coiledtension spring 29, the other end whereof is secured to the horizontal flange of the frame 10. Thus these springs, which are of proper length and strength support the plate or bracket formed by thearms 23 andplate 26 in a raised horizontal position, as shown in Fig. .5. Furthermore, on theplate 26 are providedcars 30, to each of which is pivoted anarm 31 carrying on its free end aplunger 32 which is slidably mounted in asleeve 33 having aneye 34 at one end which fits over a pin 85 projecting fromone of thelegs 11 of the table. Between theplunger 32 and the eye provided end of the sleeve is a coiled compression spring 36. It will be observed that this construction forms an angle support for the bracket, and that by detaching theeyes 34 from thepins 35, these supports may be folded with the bracket into the space withv in the frame 10 of this section of the table.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that either set of springs may be used or, in certain instances, both sets may be used since either set is readily detachable from the bracket. In using this table, the head and foot sections are assembled as in Fig. 1 with the bracket unfolded, as also shown in that figure. The patient may then be placed face down on the table and the lower part of the spine manipulated at the will of the operator, the bracket dropping down under pressure exerted by the operator on that portion of the patients body which lies above such bracket.
It will be obvious that the foregoing description and the drawings accompanying this specification illustrate merely one preferredform in which the invention may be embodied, and that this invention may be changed and modified in its details, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without departing from the material principles herein involved. Accordingly, it is intended that all of such forms as properly come Within the scope claimed are to be included.
I claim:
1. In a chiropractic table, a section comprising a frame and legs therefor, an abdominal support pivoted to said section to swing into and out of the space within the frame, said support when swung out of the frame being arranged to normally rise in a horizontalposition substantially level with the top of the frame, and spring means having pivotal connection with the abdominal support at one end and with the table section at the other end, one of said connections being readily detachable.
2. In a chiropractic table, a hollow frame, a pair of horizontally alined ears at one end of said frame, arms pivoted in said ears to swing on a horizontal axis into and out of the space within the frame, said arms when swung out of said frame being arranged to lie in a substantially horizontal position, a
padded plate supported on the free ends of said'arms to constitute an abdominal support when the arms are positioned horizontally on the exterior of the frame, spring means connecting said arms and said frame and yieldably holding the arms in horizontal position, legs supporting said frame, and other spring means connecting said legs and said plate. a
3. A chiropractic table comprising a pair of sections each having a hollow frame of substantially the same length and width, said frames being provided with padded tops, folda-ble legs pivotally mounted Within said frames and arranged, when collapsed, to fold within the frames, an abdominal supporting bracket pivotally mounted within one of said frames to swing into position within the frame and into position for use exterior of the frame and substantially level with the top thereof, said abdominal support being arranged to lie be tween said sections when set up for use, pivot lugs secured to said legs and spring means pivoted to said support and having sockets to engage said lugs for holding the support yieldably in operative position between the said sections.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
HENRY DAVID GUNTHER.
