' W. H` PLATT JAR HOLDER Filed March 27 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 vwanto Patented @et .23, 1923.
turns .Inn HOLDER,
Application filed March 27, 1923. j Serial No. 627,976.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM I-I. FLA'II,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State oi Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar Holders, of which the following is a specilication.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a highly improved form of means of holding jars and the like in the removal or application of the lid from or to jars, the device being characterized by its simplicity of construction, comparative inexpensiveness of manufacture, and ease of operation. j
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and Y wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved jar holder.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a perspective of one ot the jar holding members, and
Figure 4 is a similar view of a rubber strip carried by the said jar.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 designates a base plate, wherein the front ends of the side edges thereof are converged inwardly, and formed at their terminal point with a vertically projecting knob or head 6. Upon opposite sides of the said base plate and substantially intermediate the ends thereof, are raised projections 7 of slightly arcuate shape, the front end of .this plate being further provided with an inwardly extendinghook element 8, with which is associated a wellknown type of clamp member 9, for permitting said base plate to be rigidly sei Cured upon the edge of a table or other suitable support.
Loosely, pivotally secured to the said head or knob 6 are inwardlycurved ends 10 of substantially J-shaped arms 11. Resting upon the said projections 7 upon opposite 1 sides of thebase plate 5 are arcuate shapedjaws 12, the outer edge of eac-h being formed with laterally projecting lip orear 13, piV- otally secured at 14 to its complementary arm 11. As more clearly shown in Figure 3,
each ofthese jaws are channeled upon their inner edge at 15, for receiving anarcuateshaped rubber strip 16, Figure 4, foriobvious purposes.
Pivoted upon the free end of one of thejaws 10 is a cross link 17, this pivoted end t the link being provided with a plurality ofopenings 18, orthe reception of the pivot 19, whereby adjustment may be procured between the arms 11 and consequently thejaws 12. The opposite end of this link 17 is pivoted at 20 adjacent one end of alever 21, the endet this lever adjacent said pivot being in turn pivoted at 22 to the opposite armV 11, whereby when a' jar is positioned upon` Jthe said base plate v5, the lever is swung to Y the position shown in Figure 1, for consequently extending the jaws inwardly for leffectively grasping and maintaining rigidly a jar or similar article.
In view of the above description, it is believed by me that it will be at once apparent to those skilled in the art, thatI have provided a highlyimproved jar holder. and one that will embrace the desired features of simplicity, durability and eiiiciency, and
valthough I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor Ychanges may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention Vas claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a jar holder, a base plate, means for securing said base plate upon a support, a pair of substantially shaped arms pivoted at their curved ends to one end of said plate, jaws carried by said arms, and means for swinging said arms upon the pivot for consequently opening or closing said jaws.
2. In a jar holder, a base plate, means for securing said base plate upon a support, a pair of substantially J-shaped arms pivoted at their curved ends to one end of said base plate, jaws carried by said arms, means for swinging said arms upon the pivot for consequently opening or closing said jaws, and said jaws being formed with channels upon their inner-sides, and rubber strips within 5 said channels, and projecting outwardly therefrom.
3. In a jar holder, a base pla-te, a pair of arms pvoted at one end to one end of said base plate, jar members pivoted substantially intermediate the ends of said arms and l@ engaging over the sides of said plate, means for supporting said jaws above said plate and means for expanding and contracting said jaws.
In testimony whereof I aliX my signature.
WILLIAM II. PLA'IT.
