Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
LEANDEB J. FLING, OF HUDSON, AND ABEL LAND, OF HILLSDALE, MICH. 5 SAID vFLINGr ASSIGNOR TO HORACE BLACKMAB, OF HILLSDALE, MICH.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,858, dated December 23, 1873; application filed November 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, LEANDER J. FLING, of Hudson, Lenawee county, Michigan, and ABEL LAND, of the city of Hillsdale, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Sewing-Tables; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
'The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a ladys sewing-table with folding legs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of our table. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same, showing the legs folded. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the legs thrown out. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section through the line :v m, Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section through the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is an enlarged section, showing the manner of hinging the legs. Fig. 7 is a cross-section, and Fig. 8 a longitudinal section, showing in enlarged dimensions the joint of the brace and table-top.
A represents the table-top, made of any suitable dimensions, and having a cutout, B, in the center of the front edge, like an ordinary lap-board. Near one end of the tabletop A is made an opening forqthe insertion of a pin- 'cushion, C, which is supported by straps underneath, or other suit-able means. On the under side of the top A, near each end, is secured a cross-bar, E, the ends of which are cut out, forming osets a a, as shown in Fig. 2. At each end of each cross-bar E, from said Oifset, and immediately under the table-top, projects a pin, b, to which a leg, D, is hinged by means of a strap-hinge, d. The upper end of the leg is cut with a shoulder or oifset at c, of such size that when the leg is thrown perpendicularly downward this shoulder e will bear against the under side of the cross-bar E, on that portion thereof which remains after the offset a has been formed. This strengthens the table and removes the weight and strain from the pin b and hinge d. rlhe two legs D D,
which are in this manner hinged to one cross bar, E, are connected by means of a stretcher, G; and to the center of this stretcher is hinged a brace, H, by means of a straphinge, d1. At the outer end ofthe brace H is attached a pin, i, by means of a strap, d2, the said pin projecting beyond both sides of the brace, and working in grooved guides f j', which are attached longitudinally in the center to the under side of the table-top A. Be-
tween the guides ff, near each end, is secured a spring or spring-stop, h, at such point that when the legs are thrown out in a perpendicular position the stop will spring downward and catch against the end of the brace H, thus folding the legs firmly in their position. By pressing the spring-stop h upward, the legs can be easily folded so as to put the table away, if
desired.
This work-table is easily handled and moved from place to place; it can be manufactured at comparatively small costfand is not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a tabletop, A, of the cross-bars E, having offsets a and pins b, the legs D, with shoulders e, and the straphinges d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the hinged legs D D,
connected by the stretcher G, the brace H,
straphinge d1, pin i, and grooved guides f f, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the spring-stops 71, guides f f, and braces H, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
4. The combination of the table-top A, with cushion C, the crossfbars E, with pins b, legs D, stretcher G, strap hinges d d1, braces H,
pins t', guides f, and spring-stops h, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
LEANDER J. FLING. ABEL LAND.
