JESSE M. FLEMING, OF DRUIVIRIGHT, OKLAHOMA.
SAND TRAP.
Application filed June 7, 1821.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn M. FLEMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Drumright, in the county of Greek and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Sand Trap, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sand traps, employed in connection with oil well apparatus, the primary object of the invention being to provide means supported ad acent to the lower end of the pipe to guard the strainer and inlet openings of the pipe from floating sand entering the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily applied to the pipe, and one which will not interfere wlth the positioning of the pipe withln the well.
With the foregoing and other objects 1n view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a well pipe showing the sand trap and guards as applied thereto, the sand trap being partly broken away to disclose the straining elements thereof.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 8-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmental detail view partly in section disclosing the lower end of the pipe and strainer supported thereby.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the upper portion of the well pipe or tubing which is secured to the lower section of the pipe or tubing as by means of thecollar 6.
The lower portion of the pipe is provided 0 with theusual openings 3 which are arranged in vertical spaced relation with each other to provide communication between the interior of the pipe and the well for the purpose of admitting oil thereto. At the Serial No. 475,671.
lower end of the pipe 5 is positioned a strainer 7 that substantially houses the lower end of the pipe 5, and is secured to the pipe 5by means of the wire 7'.
Positioned on the lower extremity of the pipe, at a point adjacent to the strainer 7 is a flaredcollar 8 which is of a diameter permitting the side walls thereof to be held in spaced relation with the side walls of the pipe.
Disposed in spaced relation with thecollar 8 is a coneshaped collar 9 which also has the flared portion thereof disposed in spaced relation with the pipe, so that when the pipe is positioned within a well, the collars will contact with the walls of the well and support the pipe 5 in spaced relation therewith. Surrounding the pipe and enclosing the apertured portion thereof is a covering of burlap or other suitable fabric indicated at 10, and as shown, the burlap is secured to the pipe by means of the covering 11 of wire mesh material. Thus it will be seen that theopenings 3 are guarded to insure the oil enterin the pipe being free of sand or other foreign matter.
From the foregoing it will be seen that floating sand above thecollar 9 will ordinarily be held from theopenings 3 by means of thecollar 9, while any particular amount of oil and sand which may pass thecollar 9 will be thoroughly strained before the same enters the pipe 5 and contacts with the valves thereof. It will be seen that the strainer 7 is also protected from the floating sand by means of thecollar 8, which guards the strainer, catching the sand at a point above the strainer 7 to the end that fluid is taken in through the strainer 7 from the bottom of the well.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, a pipe having openings formed therein, a strainer disposed at one end of the pipe, a flared collar secured to the pipe adjacent to the strainer, a cone-shaped collar secured to the pipe and disposed in spaced relation with the flared collar, and means secured to the pipe between the flared collar and cone-shaped collar for guarding the openings of the pipe.
2. In a device of the character described, a pipe, a strainer disposed at one end of the pipe, means supported by the pipe and dis- In testimony that I claim the foregoing posed adjacent to the strainer for guarding as my own I have hereto affixed my sig- 10 the strainer and ahcofie-shaped ciolllar havci nature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.-
