SAFETY RAZOR.

To all 'whom it may concern i Be it known that I, HARRY B. HARTMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Scottdale, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety razors, and more particularly to an improvement in a type wherein .the blade carrier may be adjusted to various angles with reference to the handle. f
To that end a primary object of the invention is to provide a simple construction which may be easily and economically manufactured and readily mani ulated and adjusted when in use. 1n t elatter connection .the invention contemplates means for expeditiously clamping the blade in place and likewise removing the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel joint for permitting the b ade carrier to be set at the desired shaving angle, the said joint comprising a minimum nungber of parts thereby facilitating the manufacture and assembly and at the same time insuring positive and reliable operation when in use.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature 0f the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, coinbination, and arrangement of partshereinaftermore fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferred and practical embodiment of' the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the razor with the blade carrier disposed at right angles to the handle.

Referring to the accompanying drawings it will be observed that the present construction includes in its general organization a blade carrier l and handle H connected by a novel knuckle joint J. The said blade carrier l is preferably transversely arched or convex in cross section, as shown in Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings, and is provlded at opposite sides thereof with theguard edges 2, while the central portion thereof' is formed with a spring housing socket 3 opening at the top of the blade carrier and having the bottom wall 4.
At each side of the mouth of the socket 3, the said blade carrier is also preferably formed with thevlug receiving openings 5 "which may be of the key hole type, thetail slot portions 6 being adapted to accommodate a special type of clamping lug, as will hereinafter more fully appear. At the sides of the openings 5 opposite the slots the blade carrier may be provided with thecam abutments 7 for cooperating with theeccentric bearing edges 8 of the clamping lugs 9 carried by theblade clamp 10.
As will be observed from Figures 3 and 7, the said clamping lugs 9 are pivotally supported in thebearing lugs 11 carried by the underside of the clamp and the pivot pins 9a thereof are disposed transversely of the clamp whereby the lugs may be forced into operative relation with theabutments 7 on the blade carrier by swinging the head of the lug toward the socket thereof. Thus, after the blade B is placed in position upon the carrier and the clamp moved in` place by inserting the lugs through the openings 5, it will only be necessary to pinch or squeeze the heads of the lugs 9 toward each other to effect the clamping of the blade B in place. By moving the lugs with greater or less force against theabutments 7, the
edges of the blade may be raised or lowered y with reference to theguard 2 to give a light or close shave as desired. In other words, as thecam edges 8 vof the lugs 9 are eccentric to the pivot axis 9, the clamping plate is drawn tighter as the lugs are shifted further through their arc of movement.
In connection with the lugs 9 it will'be observed that the Shanks thereof may be provided with an offset lin or rib portion X adapted to pass through thetail slot portions 6 of the key-hole opening when the clamp is positioned with reference thereto. v The purpose of this type of slot in the blade carrier as well as a similar type of slot B in the blade B is to require Athe use of a special blade. Frequently the use of inferior blades in connection with an otherwise satisfactory type of razor impairs the functioning of the razor itself and therefore it is desirable for the manufacturer of the razor to make a special high grade blade which can be relied upon to give satisfaction in connection with a particular type? of razorand so construct both blade and razor that only the intended type of blade can be used.
Another feature 0f practical importance resides in the novel joint J which connects the blade carrier 1 with the handle H, and permits angular as well as circumferential movement of the carrier with reference to said handle. This construction is clearly shown in Figures 2, 3 and 6 of the drawings from which it will be observed that the upper end of the handle may be provided with the spacedjaws 12, the outer edges of which may be rounded as indicated at 13, to provide a true bearing in theseat 14 formed around lthe edge of the opening 4a in the wall 4 of the socket 3. That is to say, thel said wall y4 is provided with a cup shapedseat 14 which receives the rounded edges of thejaws 12 so as to permit of a direct bearing engagement between the socket and the jaws without the necessity of interposing a special type of washer between the socket and the handle. This construction not only eliminates one additional partl which would otherwise be required, but at the same time provides a more satisfactory bearing between the socket and the handle.
F or the purpose of providing the desired frictional 'engagement between the blade carrier and the handle, a spring tensioned eye-bolt 15 is employed. Theloop 16 of this bolt is positioned between thejaws 12 of the handle and the opening 17 thereof receives thepivot pin 18 while the shank portion of said bolt projects through the opening 4u in the bottom wall 4 of the socket, and carries at its upper end a suitable spring .abutment washer 19. Between this washer and the inside of the wall 4 of the socket 3y is arranged asuitable coil spring 20 which is compressed by the washer 19 vwhen the eye-bolt is pushed into position to receive thepivot pin 18, thereby placing the parts of the joint under suflicient tenthe lugs 9 outwardly until they aline 'with the openings and slots in theblade carrier and blade. Theclamp 10 may then be readily liftedto disengage the blade B and, when it is desiredto again use the razor, the reversal of the operation described will effect the positioning of the blade while the shifting of the lugs 9 inwardly, as by the thumb and forefnger, will quickly clamp the blade in position.
YVithout further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the present improvement will be readily 'ap-- parent, andit will of course be understood that ychanges in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims.
I claim: y
1. A safety razor including a blade carrier having openings, a blade clamping member, jointed cam. elements projecting from and carried by the blade clamp and adapted to enter said openings in the carrier, and the ends of said cam elements being adapted to be shifted to engage with the carrier to lock the clamp thereto.
2. A safety razor including a blade carrier having openings, a blade clamp, offset lug portions carried by the underside of the blade clamp, cam lugs pivoted in said offset portions and, when alined therewith, adapted to be inserted through the openings in the blade carrier and then shiftedto engage with the carrier.
.3. A safety razor including a blade car-v rier having openings, cam abutments arranged at the sides of said openings, a blade clamp, and pivoted cam lugs carried by said clamp and adapted to pass through said openings and engage with the cam abutments on the carrier to lock the clamp and carrier together.
4. A safety razor including a blade carrier having a central spring housingl socket provided with an opening and a bearing seat in one wall thereof, a handle having one end thereof formed to lit into said seat, a bolt carried by the handle and projecting into said housing socket and constituting a vertical aXis about which the socket rotates, and a spring for maintaining the seat portions of the socket in engagement with the handle.

A safety razor including a blade carrier formed .with a spring housing socket provided with an opening and a bearing seat in one wall thereof,fa handle having a bifurcated end portion and formed to fit into said seat of the socket, a bolt pivoted in said bifurcated end of the handle and projecting into the housing, and a spring carried by the bolt Within the housing for yieldngly connecting the carrier` and handle.
6. A safety razor including a blade carrierfformed with a central springhousing socket provided with an opening and a bearing seat in one wall thereof, a handle having spaced jaws whose outer edges are rounded to conform t0 the seat in one of the walls of the socket, and a coupling for connecting the carrier and handle consisting of an eye-bolt, a pivot pin for connecting the eye-bolt with the jaws of the handle to thereby permit the shank'of said bolt to remain at right angles to the handle, and said shank of the eye-bolt projecting into the socket of .the blade carrier, a spring abutment washer carried by the end lof the shank of the eye-bolt, and -a spring confined between said washer and the wall of the socket having the bearing seat. f
7. A safety razor including a guard member of transversely curved form, and hav- `ing openings, a blade clamp corresponding in cross sectional form to the guard member, camming abutments formed on the guard member adjacent the openings, pivoted lugs carried by the blade clamp and adapted to fit in the openings in the guard member, leach of said lugs having a camming surface eccentric to the pivotal axis of the lug, whereby when the said faces of the lugs engage with the camming abutments the blade clamp is progressively drawn toward the guard member to place the blade held betweenthe guard and clamp under varying tension.
