Application filed November 14, 1921. Serial No'. 515,018.y
adapted for the construction or buildingv ofy sewerpipes, silos or tures. l,
One object of my invention is to provide a building block formed at one end with an other` circular strucoffset projecting ange adapted to form asocket or union when the blocks are joined together in forming a sewer pipe.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the adjacent edges of the blocks are securely interlocked or coupled together when arranged in place in the construction of a sewer pipe, silo or other circular structure.. c c
' With the foregoing and other objects in view that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only and are therefore not drawn to scale L- Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a sewer pipe, constructed or built up from my improved building block.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a silo or other circular structure.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end view, showing how the respective blocks of each section are coupled or interlocked together at their adjacent side edges.
Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section, taken on the plane indicated by the ldotted line 4.-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective .view ofone of the building blocks and Fig. 6 a side elevation of the same. j
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention and in which drawings like parts are designed by like reference characters throughout the several views, thenumeral 1 represents a sewer pipe and 2 a silo or other circular structure, each composed of a number ofsections 3 formed` of avplurality of'independentblocks 4. 'Eachblock 4 is hollow vand of arcuate formV in cross section, comprisingthe inner andouter walls 5 and, joined-,together by radial reinforcing webs 7 8andy 9, respectively, leaving thelongitudinal passages 10 therebetween. One end of each block`4. is
lformedr with an oii'setlongitudinally projecting -flange 11 which provides a socket or the laterally spaced longitudinally disposed union for the adjoiningv end of the adjacent' section. This featureis especiallyfuseful in the building ofsewerpipes. (See Figs.. 1 and 4.), f j
The side edge of each block adjacent.` the web 8 is formed with a hollow longitudinally disposed inwardly projectingtongue 12 which extends the full length of the body of the block and is disposedintermediate the inner and outer walls thereof. Theinner wall 13 of thistongue 12 `has formed on its inner face, entirely throughout its length,f 4
a substantially U-shapedrecess 14 adapted tov receive a corresponding flange-15 formed on the opposite end of the adjacent block. l It will be noted that thegwebs9 of theblocks 4 are spaced inwardly from theadjacent side edges thereof and` are curved inwardly to form sockets 16 for thetongues 12; also, that the outer faces 17 of thewebs 9 yare so curved with respect to the convexouter faces 18 of thetongues 12 as to form taperingspaces 18 therebetween, of outwardly increasing width, for the reception of cement or other binding material 20. To provide for a more effectualinterlockingengagement between the edges yof adjacent blocks of leach circular section, theouter Walls 21 of thetongues 12 are formed'in their outer faces with a plurality of longitudinally disposed inwardly inclined ap# proXimately V-shaped grooves 22which are spacedl apart laterally and receive particlesof the cement or other binding material, while the opposite edges and outer walls of the blocks are provided with inwardly projecting flanges l23 which seat in the cement or `other binding material agent, as shown in Figure 5.
The blocks are arranged in place withthe socket forming fianges 11 of .each circular section receiving the. adjoining ends of the adjacent circular section and with thetongues 12 of the respective blocks of each circular section fitting in the corresponding sockets of the adjacent blocks'. The blocks are also preferably laid with the joints broken, that isI to say, with the joints of one layer or section alternating with those of the adjacent layer or section, asillustrated in Figures l and 2.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is thought that the construction7 operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having described my invention, What l claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y A building block comprising ya body provided at one edge With a tongue portion which is curved along the plane of its axis beyond the adjacent edge face of the body, said tonguev portion being provided at one side with a recess and at its opposite side with V-sliapedl grooves, the body of the block being provided at its opposite edge with a substantially U-shaped socket the mouth ofwhich is of the salme transverse Vbreadth as the transverse breadth of the tongue portion at its base line, the intermediate portion of the socket being of greater transverse Ybreadth than the intermediate and end portions of the tongue7 the socket being of greater depth than the:
length of the tongue, the mouth portion of the socket being provided at one side With an inwardly disposed flange adapted to lit snugly in the recess upon the tongue of an adjacent block, the relative dimensions of the tongue portion and the socket being such that when two of the blocks are placed edge toy edge together the tongue portion of one block is completely received in the socket of the other block, with the face surfaces of the adjacent blocks in close contact With each other and suiiicient space being left between one side of the tongue portiononly and the adjacent surface of the socketto receive and completely enclose a filling of cement. j I
In testimony whereof I aliiX my signa-ture. NELS A. NORD. l
