.lpplication filed March 27, 1922. Serial Nb. 547,096.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. FLowERs,
a. citizen of United States, residing at Complete, in the county of Laudersdale and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope and Cable Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The present invention relates to devices for tying or fastening ropes, cables and the like, and it is the object of the invention to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive device of that kind which is also practical and efficient for the intended purposes.
Another object is the provision of such a device which can be easily and cheaply made from a single piece or blank of sheet metal or similar material.
A further object is to provide such a device having novel means for receiving the rope or cable and binding or fastening same securely.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent when the invention is more fully understood from the description, the invention resides in the construction and formation of the device as hereinafter described, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is hereinafter claimed, without depart ing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the device showin the rope or cable fastened therein.

The device is formed from a square piece or blank of sheet metal or similar stock, which is bent into U-shaped cross-section, to provide a channel-shaped member having thesides 4 andbend 5, with a channel or groove between said sides along the bend, in which the rope or cable can lay. Eachside 4 is provided with aslot 6 extending from one end, and the two slots are located at opposite ends of said sides. Said slots 4: toward thebend 5, and decrease in width extend at an angle from the ends of the sides from their open to their closed ends, as seen in Fig. 2. The closed or inner ends of the slots are in overlapping relation, as seen in Fig. 2, and said slots are also arranged at acute angles with the bend. orintermediate portion 5 of the plate or member constituting the device. 7
The device may beused for many different purposes, such as for fastening the guy ropes of tents and the like, hammock ropes, etc. The chief use of the device is for fastening the terminal portion of the rope or cable after it is doubled back to form a loop. Thus, as shown in Fig.1, the cable orrope 7 has one. terminal portion doubled back to form theloop 8 to engage a stake, or other anchor member, and the device is then placed on the cable orrope 7, so that said rope or cable lays in the channel or groove against thebend The free terminal portion of the rope is then drawn into theslot 6 opening opposite to theloop 8, as at 9, and after the rope is pulled tightly intosuch slot 6, it is passed across the portion of the rope which lays against thebend 5, as at 10, and the terminal portion of the rope is then drawn into theother slot 6, as at 11, and is pulled tight. Due to the fact that theslots 6 converge, theportion 10 of the rope which extends across the longitudinal portion laying against thebend 5, will be pulled toward a transverse position when the terminal is pulled tight. Furthermore, the rope being pulled into theslots 6, which decrease in width, will be given a wedge fit in said slots, for gripping or clamping the rope in said slots, and, in addition, the rope in being pulled into the slots will be forced by cam action toward thebend 5, thereby clamping therope 7 between theportion 10 andbend 5. As a result, the terminal portion of the rope is tightly secured in place, and there are several factors which will prevent the rope from slipping. First, the rope has a double bend where it passes through theslots 6, to prevent slipping. Second, the rope being drawn into thetapered slots 6 will bind in said slots by a wedging action. Third, the rope being moved by camaction in said slots due to the pull on. the rope, willdcreatef 'a clamping action. Therefore, altlioughthe device enables the terminal portion of the rope to be readily fastened to the main portion, there is no danger of slippage, and the greater the pull on the rope, the tighter it will be held.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A device of the character described com prising a portion along which a portion of a. rope can lay, and having slotsopening in different directions for receiving the terminal portion of the rope to extend across the aforesaid portion of the, rope and the slots being so arranged that a pull on said terminal portion of the rope will clamp the first named portion of the rope between said terminal port-ion and said portion of the device.
2. A device of the character described .having a portion along which a. portionof a rope can lay. and having a pair of slots opening in different directions for receiving the terminalportion of the rope to extend across the aforesaid portion of the rope, and so arranged that a. pullon said terminal portion of the rope will clamp the first named portion of therope between said terminal portion and said portion of the device, said slots decreasing in width for binding the terminal portion of the rope therein.

A device of the character described having a, portion along which a. portion of a rope can extend, and having slots opening in different directions for receiving the terminal portion of the rope to extend across the aforesaidportion of the rope, said slots being arranged at acuteangles with said portion of the device for clamping the first-named portion of the rope between the terminal portion and said portionof the device when,
said terminal portion is pulled.

A device of the character described having a portion along which a portion of a rope can extend, and. having slots opening in different directions for receiving the terminal portion of the rope to extend across the aforesaid portion of the rope, said slots being arranged at acute angles with said portion of the device for clamping thefirstnamed portion of the rope between the terminal portion and said portion of the de vice when said terminal portion is pulled, and said slots decreasing in width for binding the terminal. portion of the rope therein.
5. A device of the character described comprising a member of U-shaped section having sides with slots therein for receiving the terminal portion of a rope to extend acrossa portion of the rope lying against the bend of said member and so arranged that a pull on the terminal portion of the rope will clamp the second-named portion of therope between said terminal portion and bend of said member.

A device of the character described comprising a member of U-shaped section having sides with slots therein for receiv ing the terminal portion of a rope to extend across aportion of the rope lying in said member against the bend thereof, said slots being arranged at acute angles with the bend portion of said. member for clamping the rope between said terminal portion of the rope and said portion of said member when said terminal portion. is pulled.
8. A device of the character described comprising a member of U-shaped section having sides with slots therein for receiving the: terminal portion of a rope to eX- tend across a portion of the rope lying in said member against the bend thereof, said slots being arranged at acute angles with the bend portion out said member for clamping a rope between said terminal portion of the rope and said portion of said member when said terminal portion is pulled, and said slots decreasing in width for binding the terminal portion of the rope therein.

A device of the character described comprising a member of U-shaped section having sides with slots opening in different directions for receiving the terminal portion of a rope and so arranged that a pull on the terminal portion of the rope will clamp another portion of the rope between said terminal portion and the bend of said member in which the second-named portion.

12. A device of the character described comprising a member of U-shaped section having sides with slots opening in different directions for receiving the terminal portion of a rope, said slots being arranged at acute angles with the bend portion of said member so that they force the terminal portion of the rope, when pulled into the slots, by cam action toward said bend portion of the member for clamping the rope between said terminal portion and bend portion, and said slots decreasing in Width for binding said terminal portion therein.
