To all Lu/0m i may concern: A Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY SPEN- CER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Vine Inn, vGlen Csmond Road, Glen Csmond, State of South Australia, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented a certain new and useful llmproved 'Cigarette Case, of which the following is al specification. v
My improved cigarette case comprisesla thin flat or approximately flat metal case having in one side a filling opening with a cover, either hinged or slidable with a spring attachment, and having within a slidable spring-operated ejecting device adapted to eject the cigarettes one by one through an opening in one end. The cove-r carries a compression plate attached by means of a spring formed of a number of leaves fastened together in the -form of a which plate keeps the cigarettes pressed over so that the innermost one is in position for ej ectment. j
In order that my invention may be clearly understood ll will describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is an outside view showing the shutter removed from over the opening and a cigarette projecting therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view sho-wlng the movable parts in normal position,.that is with the shutter'closed, and
l? ig. 3 is a sectional view upon a larger scale showing the movable parts in their alternative position, that is with the shutter removed from over the opening and the cigarette projecting therefrom.
The case A is made of sheet metal-and either plain or ornamented as desired.
One side is open and fitted with a slidable cover B, which cover carries a compression plate C attached'by means of a spring D formed of a number of leaves fastened together in the form of a W.
The ejecting device comprises a light spring-operated rod E, one end of which projects through an opening in the end of the case and carries a shutter F that normally closes such opening, while its other end carries an ejecting plate H which engages the end of the innermost cigarette M and carries the cigarette with it when the rod is released.
The plate H is not rigidly fastened to the rod E but is mounted thereon between two collars so that while it is moved forward and backward with the rod it does not r0- tate therewith.
The rod E is carried in and is slidable in two holes, one in the plate (i in the end of the case and the other in a fixed plate J.
Around the rod is a spiral spring K confined `between the plate J and a collar L upon the rod.
Upon the rod towards its lower end is a projecting finger P which, when the rod is released, lstrikes and moves aroundV a fixed curved guide llt, causing therod to make a partial rotation and so remove the shutter from over the hole through which the cigarette is to be ejected.
Upon the extreme end of the rod is a button S which passes through a hole in the end of the case and normally engages such end and holds the rod in place.
For convenience in manufacture the plates G and J and the guide R are made integral with a plate T which is made with several short studs which fit into holes in the case and hold it in place therein. This enables the plate and the slidable rod with its attachments to be removed and replaced if required for any purpose.
An inclined spring plate V secured to the at case ensures that thecigarette end shall rest upon the ejecting plate.
Normally the parts occupy the positions shown in Fig. 2k the rod lE being held in place by the button S with the spring K au compressed. Upon the button being pushed into the hole in the end of the case the spring causes the rod to move endwise, the plate H carrying acigarette with it. As the rod moves endwise the finger ll) strikes and at moves around the guidel lt causing the rod to make a partial rotation, thereby removing the shutter I" from over the hole in the end of the case.
' What I claim as my invention is l. The improved cigarette casecomprising :-an approximately flat metal case having in the one side a removable cover and within the other side an ejecting device, said coverl carrying a compression 4plate at- 105 tac-hed by means of a spring, and said ejecting device comprising `a spring-operated slidable rod carrying upon one end a shutter and 'upon the other end an ejecting plate and a button.
2. The improved cigarette case comprising an approximately flat metal case A having at one side a filling opening and at the other side, an 'opening in each end; a cover B with compression plate C attached by spring D; a slidable rod E carrying a shutter F, an ejecting plate H a collar L, a finger P and a button S; a spiral spring K encircling said rod and confined between a fixed plate J and the collar L on said rod; and a fixed curved guide R which engages the finger P. projecting from said rod and causes the rod when released by the button S to make a partial rotation.
3. An ejector mechanism o-f the character described, comprising al rod longitudinally movable, and a shutter carried by the` rod adapted to be brought to its open position when said rod is simultaneously rotated and moved longitudinally in predetermined directions.
4. An ejector mechanism of the character described, comprising a. rod longitudinally movable, a shutter carried by the rod adapted to be brought to its open posit-ion when said rod is simultaneously rotated and moved longitudinally in predetermined directions, spring means associated with said rod for resisting longitudinal movement thereof, means whereby the rod may be held against the tension of said spring, and means whereby said rod may be rotated a predetermined degree upon being released and moved under the tension of said spring means.
5. An ejector mechanism of the character described, comprising a longitudinally movable rod, a coil spring adapted to resist the movement of said rod in one direction, means for holding the rod against the tension of said coil spring, means associated with the rod whereby the same will be rotated a predetermined degree during the movement thereof -under tension of the spring, and a shutter carried by said rod ladapted to be broughtto its open position with the simultaneous movement and rotation of the rod.
6. An ejector mechanism of the character described, comprising a longitudinally movable rod, a coil spring adapted to resist the movement of said rod in one direction, means whereby said rod may be held when moved against the tension of said coil spring, a shutter carried at one end of the rod adapted to be moved to its open position with the simultaneous movement of the rod in one direction for rotation thereof, a. projection carried by said'rod, and a curved surface disposed in the path of said projection whereby upon the release of said rod the same will be rotated a predetermined degree when moved under the tension of the coil spring.
7. In combination with a cigarette case, an ejector mechanism comprising a spring pressed rod, means for holding the rod against the tension of the spring, means for releasing the rod, means whereby upon the :release of the rod a cigarette may be discharged from the case, and means for auto-- matically opening and closing the discharge opening of the case.
8. In combination with a cigarette case, an ejector mechanism, comprising a spring pressed rod carried at its one end, a shutter adapted to be moved to its open position upon the simultaneous longitudinal movement of the rod and rotation thereof in predetermined directions, and means whereby upon the release of said rod the same will be rotated and moved in the proper direction for opening the shutter.
9. In combination with a cigarette case, an ejector mechanism, comprising a spring pressed rod, means whereby upon the release of said rod the same will be rotated and moved in the proper direction for opening a shutter to form a cigarette discharge opening 1n the wall of case, and means carried by said rod whereby a 'cigarette may be simultaneously discharged through said openmg.
10. In combination with a cigarette case, a spring pressed plate adapted to urge the cigarettes toward one end of the casing, a spring finger adapted to hold the similar ends of the cigarettes within the case in spaced relation with the one side wall of the case, a spring pressed ejector rod carrying a. finger adapted to be disposed in the space provided by said spring finger, and means whereby said rod may be manipulated for discharging a cigarette one at a time from the case.
