and FRED N. Hays, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Edgewood Park and Pittsburgh, both in the county ot' Allegheny and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bin Gates, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the outlets or discharge ports or bins or hoppers. lorry cars, and the like, and more `particularly to means for forming a seal between the discharge ports or outlets of such devices and the inlets or receiving ports of a bin, hopper, or other receptacle.
@ne object of the invention ispto provide a seal which is movable into and out oi' sealing position, and which is actuated by the mechanism used in opening the gate 'or shutter controlling the outlet or discharge port of a bin or hopper, or other receptacle.
Another object of this invention is to provide asealing mechanism which consists ot' tew parts, is readily and cheaply manufactured, andis *strong and durable.
The above and other objects oi' our invention will be more t'ully explained hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming` part ot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation showing one arrangement of apparatus embodying our invention.

inely'divided materials such as iron ore. flue dust, ashes, and the like, the apparatus comprises a delivery or discharge conduit leading from an overhead bin or hopper, a lorry car B which receives the materials discharged from the conduit and a receiv-y ing conduit C into which materials are discharged from the lorry car l. lt is -to be understood that the receiving conduit C is located at a distance from the conduit A, the lorry car B being used to transport materials from the conduit to the conduit C.
T he lorry car B comprises a Wheeled truck 2, which travels on the track formedby theerails 3, and a body portion e. The upper end or top of the bodyt is closed,'with the exception of the inlet opening orport 5, this port having an annular ring or shoulder 6 projecting upwardly and terminating in an outwardly extending i'lange 1. The bottom 8 oit thecar body 5 is rusto-conical and has a depending straight or vertically walled outlet port 9. A second depending vertical wall, which is spaced from the wall of the outlet port 9, -forms a skirt for supporting the operatingv mechanism by which the gate orshutter 11 and thesealing ring 12 are manipulated in opening and closing theshutter 11 andring 12.
Thevgate 11, which as shown, is of the rocking type, is adapted to swing into and out of closing engagement with the lower edge of the Wall forming the port 9. rThis gate has a closure portion l13, which is of vconsiderably greater width than the port 9 andside members 14 and 14a. rilhe upper end of the side members are provided with integral stub shafts orpivot pins 15 and l5a respectively, which extend outwardly at right angles to theside members 14, 1st, and are journaled inbearings 16 formed in the wall o1`skirt 10.
The sealing means orring 12 is telescoped over the Wall orskirt 10 and is free to slide or move vertically relative thereto. The space between thering 12 and wall orskirt 10 is'sealed and made dustproof by means of arenewable packing 17. this packing being made of asbestos, rubber, or like material, and being removably secured to the lower edge oftheskirt 10 so as to bear against the inner surface of the sealingring 12.
The stub shaft orpin 15a, which is longer than thestub shaft 15, has agear 18 keyed to open and close the discharge port or outletspur gear teeth 31 so 9. rl`lie gear 18 meshes with aspiii pinion 19 on theshaft 20 which is liournaled in a hearing :21 and in abearing 22 on the lower end of the bracket 23 which depends from the sloping bottoni of thelorry car body 4. The shaft extends through the bearing '22 and has asprocket wheel 21 keyed on one end thereof which is operatively connected by thesprocket chain 25 to the sprocket wheel 2G on the shaft 2T. The sha-ft v27. which is mounted in a bearing on the body Lt of the car A is provided with ahand wheel 28. so that when the hand wheel is turned motion will be communicated. through thesprocket wheels 2l and 26 andchain 25, to the shaft 2O and. through theshaft 20, to thegears 19 and 1S and rock shaft- 152. so as to swingor rock the gate or shutter 1l.
Thestub shafts 15 and 15a havelevers 30 and 3()a keyed thereon to turn withthe shafts. and the ends of these levers which are fixed to the shafts.'are provided with as to Jform a segmental and mutilated geai. Another pair of levers 32- aiid 32a. which are mounted to turn on stub shafts 33 and 33a ixed to thewall 10, have similarly arrangedspur gear teeth 34 which mesh with theteeth 31 on the levers and 30a. so that when thehand wheel 28 vis turned thelevers 30 and 30, 32 and -to one end of alink 35,
32a. are caused to `swing in unison.
'Each ofthe levers 30, 30a and 32. 32a is pivotally connected at its swinging end and the lower depending end of thelinks 35 are bent to Jform hooks A3G which engage with anti-friction rollers 3T secured by pins to the lifting ears or lugs 38 on the sealingring 12. in raising and lowering this sealing ring into and out ot' operative position. i
The delivery or discharge conduit A of Y Figures 1 and -2 is shown provided with the same sealing mechanism and gate or shutter inechanism'as thatl on the discharge port or outlet 9 of the lorry car B and in referring to this mechanism the .same reference numerals are used to designate like parts. However instead ot' employing the hand wheel 2S in the manner which hasbeen described. the sprocket wheel 28a. is mounted on the shaft 2T which carries a 'pinion gear 26a. and this vgear 26l meshes direct-lv with agear 24: on the end of theshaft 20. A sprocket chain l0. which is trained over the sprocket wheel 28n and over a pairof idler sprocket wheels il and 42 which are rotatably mounted on asupport 43. is eniployed to operate the lifting mechanism in moving the sealingring 12 into and out of opera-.tive position on the deliverv conduit A.
It will be noted that the travel of the gate or shutter l1 that is necessary in order to open and 'close the conduit 9 is vconsiderably greater than the travel of the sealingring 12 that is required to move the ring into and out of its operative position and, therefore, in order to move the sealing ring into operative position before the outlet port 9 beginsvto open and to entirelyclose the outlet port 9 before the sealing ring commences to move from its operative position with a single operating mechanism, it is necessary to provide for considerable lost motion in the operating mechanism. n
In the operation of ourv improved apparatus in connection with the lorry car B, the car will be moved on the trac-k rails 3 until the outlet port 9 is directly above the receiving conduit AC.
Thehand wheel 28 will then be moved so as to turn theshaft 20. At the commencement of the turning movement of theshaft 20. thelinks 35 will start to move downwardly. and at the same time the shutter orgate 13 will start to swing. Turning movement of the shaft 2O is continued, and when the sealingring 12, which moves downwardlv1 by gravity rests upon the dangle 7 of the receiving conduit @thegate 13 w1 l still be in port closing position, this gate being made long enough to make this possible. Further turning movement of the shaft 2O continues the swinging movement of the shutter orgate 13 and' gradually uncovers or opens the port 9 so as to permit materials within thebody portion 4 of the lorry car to flow b v gravity into the receiving conduit C. It will be noted that as the sealing ring had moved downwardly into sealing position before the'gate 11 commenced to open. that the escape of dust or finely divided solids froni between the lower end of the poi't 9 and upper end of the receiving conduit C is prevented and overcome. After the sealingring 12 becomes seated upon the flange Ta of the conduit C. the hooks on the l110 ends of thelinks 35 move downwardly out of engagnient with the anti-friction rollers 3T 'on the pins secured to the lugs orears 38 on the sealingring 12, this downward movementsgot` thelinks 35 being continued 115 until the gate or shutter l1 is in port opening position.
After the body i of the lorry car is emptied of its contents, thelhand Ywheel 28 is moved in the opposite direction. Atthe 120 commencement of this reverse movement the gate or shutter 11 is moved into port closing position and the poit is entirely 36 on the en age with 125 and start to litt the sealing ring into -inoperative position', or from the position 130 mamas shown in Figure l into that shown in Figure 3. During the time the ring l2 is being lifted. the gate l1 continues to move but Without uncovering the port 9. lt also will be noted that the sealing ring remains in sealing position until the gate ll is returned to its closing position belonv the port 9.
, The lorry car vvill then be transferred into position to receive another load of the materials being handled by moving it into position immediately beneath the discharge or outlet conduit A.
The operation of the sealing ring on the outlet A is substantially the same as that of the ring on the bottom of the lorry car. one exception being that the sprocket chain ai() is employed to actuate the operating mechanism instead of the hand wheel 2S.

vhile one specific. embodiment of our invention is shoivn and described. herein, it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not limited thereto. since various mod'ications in the construction and application of appa latus embodying our invention may be made without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.

The combination with a receptacle having a discharge port. of a gate for controlling said port. a reciprocable sealing ring mounted around said port adapted to seal said port with the inlet port of a receiving bin. means for operating said sealing ring and said gate. said means being adapted to move said sealing ring into operative position prior to the -opening of said gate, and comprising rocking shafts on said gate, means for rotating said shafts and said gate, a lever secured to each of said shafts, gear teeth formed on the end of said levers adjacent said shaft. other levers mounted on stub shafts to the one side of said rocking shafts, gear teeth formed on the end of said last named levers nearest said stub Shaft. said teeth on said last named levers being in mesh with the teeth on said first named levers. links pivotally secured to the free ends of said levers and having their other ends removably secured to suitable lugs formed on said ring.
